Watch the OBS preview and Stats window during a file change, then use the matching fix below. Changing loop or restart settings alone is not a universal fix.
Identify where the frames are being lost
Reproduce the file change while watching both the local OBS preview and the Stats window. Note what happens at the moment of the switch:
- The file stutters in the preview: investigate the media source and whether it unloads or restarts during the change.
- Rendering or encoding lag appears: OBS may be struggling with scene or media workload.
- The network dropped-frame counter rises: the connection to YouTube’s ingest server may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. OBS says, “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.” OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
- Only viewers report buffering: that does not by itself show that OBS is dropping frames. Check OBS’s own indicators before changing settings.
OBS treats connection problems and system-performance problems separately; use the symptom and counter that actually appear rather than assuming every transition hiccup has the same cause. See OBS’s streaming performance guidance and connection troubleshooting.
Check the source type and file-switch behavior
Use Media Source for an individual file
OBS’s Media Source is intended for a media file. Inspect its Loop and Restart playback when source becomes active controls if playback behavior is not what you expect. These settings control playback; they are not documented as a general cure for dropped frames.

Also check Close file when inactive. OBS says this unloads a hidden source to free memory. When the source is shown again, it may take a short period to reload and appear. If the stutter lines up with that reload, compare the transition with this option turned off. The trade-off is that the hidden file is no longer unloaded to free memory.
Use VLC Video for a playlist
For a playlist, OBS provides the VLC Video Source, which uses VLC libraries and includes a Loop Playlist option. If VLC Video is missing, confirm VLC is installed; OBS specifies matching 64-bit VLC when OBS is 64-bit. Review how source visibility affects playback, but do not assume playlist looping will fix a performance or connection problem. Details are in the OBS media sources guide.

This is a task-based choice, not evidence that one source is always smoother.
Reduce OBS workload if rendering or encoding lags

- Simplify the scene and remove or reduce expensive sources and filters.
- Use media at a resolution appropriate for the stream output.
- If needed, test a lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS gives trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working as an example.
Change one factor at a time and reproduce the same file change so you can tell whether it affected the symptom. OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide covers choppy output and encoding overload.
Follow the network path if OBS counts dropped frames
A rising network dropped-frame count points to the connection or the bitrate it must sustain, not automatically to the file transition. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps and assess whether the connection can reliably carry the configured bitrate.

OBS describes dynamic bitrate as an option that can reduce drops during congestion by lowering the bitrate. That can reduce video quality, and it does not fix the underlying connection problem. Treat it as a compromise, not a root-cause repair.

If the issue continues, capture an OBS log from a session that reproduces the file change. Include the OBS version, operating system, source type and relevant source settings, and the Stats values at the time of the symptom. Without those details, the cause cannot be narrowed to a specific setup; the phrase “drops frames when changing files” is not enough to identify a machine-specific fault.

A related public discussion asks whether frames can be avoided when changing an image source, but that wording does not establish that image switching and media-file switching share one cause. Nor does a historical report about media sources unloading establish a general defect in current OBS versions. Earlier release notes mention media-source fixes, including remote-stream reconnection and buffering-related audio behavior, but do not document a general fix for this exact symptom.
