You can add scenes, overlays, camera and screen inputs, and transitions to a live stream with production software such as OBS Studio; you do not need a hardware video switcher for those tasks. Build scenes from sources, arrange their layers, and use Studio Mode, transitions, or hotkeys to change what viewers see. A green screen is needed only if you want to remove a camera background with chroma key.
What production software can do instead of a switcher
A software production application composes a live output from separately managed sources. In OBS Studio, sources can include a camera, a screen or display, images, text, media, audio, and browser-based elements. You can combine those sources into distinct scenes, then switch between scenes or change which sources are visible. OBS documents these source types in its Sources Guide.
This covers common production tasks such as showing a game with a webcam and logo, bringing up a break screen, adding labels, or displaying a web overlay. It does not establish that software will perform better than hardware: the official guides document functions, not controlled CPU or latency comparisons.
Build a live layout in OBS Studio
1. Plan the scenes you will use
In OBS, create a small set of reusable scenes for the moments in your show. A practical starting set is Welcome, Main, Break, and End; OBS’s overview guide also gives examples such as Desktop and Game. Scenes let you prepare different combinations of sources rather than rebuilding your layout while live.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Add the sources for each scene
In the Sources dock, select the plus button and choose the appropriate source. Use a video-capture source for a camera, a display-capture source for a screen, an image source for a logo or static frame, and a text source for labels. A browser source can show a web page or overlay, including alerts or a chat widget. OBS’s Sources Guide describes these options; the browser source is also documented in the obs-browser README.
3. Arrange and control the layers
In the Sources list, items higher in the order appear above items lower down. Reorder sources to put graphics over gameplay or camera footage, then position and resize them in the preview. Crop a source when you want to show only part of it. Use its visibility control to hide or show an element without removing it from the scene.

4. Prepare scene changes before showing them
Studio Mode lets you work on a scene while the current scene remains on the live output; when the prepared scene is ready, transition it to the output. OBS documents cut and fade as built-in transitions, with additional options including swipe, slide, fade to color, and luma wipe. Hotkeys can switch to a specific scene or show and hide sources. Use these controls for scene changes and quick overlays, rather than relying on a hardware switcher for basic composition.
5. Test the complete show before going live
Preview each scene and transition, check that sources appear in the intended order, and confirm that the overall stream is smooth before your first broadcast. OBS recommends testing scenes and settings ahead of time to catch configuration or performance problems. The official guidance does not provide a guaranteed setting or performance result for every computer and scene, so verify your own setup.

Use an overlay library or import an existing design
If you already use Streamlabs overlays, Streamlabs documents three routes: install an overlay from its library, import an existing overlay file, or build scenes manually and add image files as sources. It also documents moving an overlay into OBS by importing a Streamlabs scene collection; that transfer route does not require suggesting that a plugin is necessary. Library contents and product features can change, so check the current application instructions. See Streamlabs’ overlay guide.

When you actually need a green screen
A green screen is optional. It is useful only when you want to remove the camera background using chroma key; it is not needed for static graphics, text, browser widgets, or scene transitions. OBS’s webcam instructions explain that you can add a Video Capture Source, position and resize it, and apply a Chroma Key filter to remove a greenscreen. See OBS’s webcam guide. If you are pursuing that camera effect, a green screen backdrop kit is the relevant physical item; otherwise, it adds nothing to the software overlay workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps a prerecorded video live around the clock, rather than a camera-led show you are producing in real time, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so a computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not live camera production.
