How to Change Your Twitch Ingest Server

Most encoders choose a Twitch ingest server automatically. If you need to change it, select a nearby endpoint in your encoder and test the broadcast with Twitch Inspector.

To change your Twitch server, change the ingest server—the endpoint your streaming software sends your broadcast to—in your encoder’s stream or RTMP settings, if it offers that control. Most software selects an appropriate server automatically, so leave that setting alone unless you are troubleshooting or need a specified endpoint. If you choose manually, start with the server physically closest to you, then test the result in Twitch Inspector.

What “Twitch server” means

The ingest server receives your broadcast as it enters Twitch’s network from the public internet. It is separate from your Twitch account region and from the servers that deliver playback to viewers. The ingest endpoint is part of the RTMP URL, in this format: rtmp://TWITCH-INGEST-SERVER/app/STREAM-KEY. The stream key identifies or authorizes your broadcast; it is not the server address. Keep the key private and do not show it on stream. See Twitch’s Twitch Stream Key FAQ.

Change the ingest server

  1. Check whether you need to change it. Twitch says most streaming software and services choose a suitable, usually nearby, ingest server automatically. If your stream is stable, you generally do not need to select one yourself. Twitch’s Guide to Using Twitch Inspector recommends testing after you move or change internet service providers.
  2. Find the stream destination control in your encoder. Open the application’s stream, server, ingest, or RTMP configuration and look for an automatic/manual server choice or a server URL field. The exact label and location depend on the application and version. Twitch’s official guidance describes the RTMP endpoint, but does not provide a current click-by-click path for OBS or every encoder, so menu paths should not be assumed.
  3. Choose a nearby endpoint if selecting manually. If you are unsure which server to use, Twitch advises choosing the one physically closest to your current location. Network routes differ, however, so proximity is a starting point—not a guarantee that a particular endpoint will perform best.
  4. Keep the stream key separate and private. Change only the server or endpoint field; do not replace the server with your stream key or publish the key. The endpoint and key are distinct parts of the RTMP configuration.
  5. Run a test and inspect it. Use Twitch Inspector to see which Twitch server handled the broadcast and whether the test stream had unstable events. Compare the result with automatic selection or another nearby endpoint rather than judging from a single brief connection attempt.

Automatic selection or manual server?

Choice When it makes sense What to check
Automatic selection Best default for most broadcasters; software generally selects a suitable ingest server. Use Inspector to confirm the server used and review stability.
Manual endpoint Useful as a troubleshooting test or when a specific endpoint is required and the encoder exposes the setting. Begin with the physically closest endpoint, then compare test results. Routes can vary.

If changing servers does not help

Switching ingest endpoints can sometimes help when a network route is the problem, but it is not a guaranteed fix for dropped frames, stream instability, latency, or playback problems. Twitch’s broadcast-health guidance includes changing the ingest server as one possible network troubleshooting step; it does not establish that this resolves every issue. See Twitch’s broadcast-health guidance.

  • Check Inspector’s test results and confirm which endpoint your encoder actually used.
  • If you recently moved or changed internet providers, test again; a different location or route may change which endpoint performs well.
  • If multiple nearby endpoints show similar instability, investigate other network or broadcast-health causes rather than repeatedly switching servers.

Or let it run in the cloud
