In OBS, open Settings → Advanced, enable Automatic Reconnect, then set Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. Retry Delay is the initial wait, not a fixed gap: OBS doubles the wait on each retry. For a long-running YouTube broadcast, also check the broadcast’s Auto-stop setting, because it can affect whether OBS can reconnect to the same scheduled broadcast.
Configure automatic reconnect in OBS
- Open Settings → Advanced and locate Automatic Reconnect. Turn it on. OBS documents automatic reconnect as an Advanced setting, though its exact arrangement may vary by version or output mode. OBS overview guide
- Set Retry Delay to the initial wait before OBS attempts to reconnect. OBS doubles the retry time on each attempt, so later waits grow rather than staying at the initial interval. OBS output settings reference
- Set Maximum Retries to the number of attempts you want OBS to make. OBS does not specify a universally correct delay or retry count; choose based on how long you are willing to let it attempt recovery.
Check the labels in your installed OBS version if the controls are arranged differently; the available documentation does not establish one exact layout for every version, operating system, and output mode.
Choose a delay and retry count for a long-running stream
There is no single best Retry Delay or Maximum Retries setting. The delay controls the starting pause, while the retry count caps the attempts. Because the wait doubles with each attempt, the sequence may span much longer than the initial delay suggests. Use a retry count that reflects your tolerance for an interruption and the time you want OBS to keep trying; do not interpret the starting delay as a promise that every retry will happen at that interval.
A larger retry count gives OBS more attempts, but it does not repair an unstable connection or guarantee that the YouTube broadcast remains available. If OBS repeatedly loses connection, troubleshoot the cause rather than only extending the retry sequence.

Check YouTube’s broadcast Auto-stop behavior
For a scheduled YouTube stream, review the broadcast’s Auto-stop setting alongside OBS reconnect. The OBS YouTube integration guide says disabling Auto-stop can allow reconnection after an interruption; with Auto-stop enabled, a later reconnection to that broadcast may not be possible. A broadcast can eventually end after several hours without incoming stream data, even when you intend to resume it. OBS YouTube live streaming guide
Troubleshoot repeated disconnects and dropped frames
Automatic reconnect only retries after a loss of connection. OBS lists unstable connectivity, bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain, software interference, and faulty network hardware among possible causes. OBS dropped-frames troubleshooting

Check upload capacity and bitrate
OBS recommends lowering video bitrate based on stable upload speed and the streaming service’s limits. Its troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point; this is general troubleshooting guidance, not a YouTube-specific official bitrate specification or a guarantee. Leave headroom for fluctuations rather than setting bitrate at the maximum your connection briefly reaches.
Prefer a wired connection when Wi-Fi is unstable
OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. If you already use Ethernet, inspect the cable and other network hardware along the connection path; a faulty cable can also contribute to interruptions. OBS dropped-frames troubleshooting

Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can reduce dropped frames by lowering bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It does not fix the underlying network problem and may reduce video quality, so treat it as a fallback while addressing the cause.
Test advanced network options cautiously
The OBS troubleshooting guide says some users report benefit from Windows-only network optimization and TCP pacing settings. Keep Bind to IP at Default. If testing IPv4-only makes no difference, return IP Family to IPv4 and IPv6. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes.
