The essential extra step is a mix-minus return for each guest—a feed of the program audio with that guest’s own voice removed—so they do not hear their speech come back delayed.
Plan the audio routes before going live
Think in terms of destinations, not mixer hardware. For each source, decide whether it belongs in the public stream, the operator’s headphones, and the remote guest’s return. A simple gaming stream may have a host microphone, remote guest, game or desktop audio, music, and alerts. The public program and the guest return are different mixes: the return should include what the guest needs to hear, but not that guest’s own channel.
- Public program: the sources viewers should hear.
- Operator monitoring: the sources the host or operator needs to check locally.
- Guest return: the host and selected program sources sent to the guest, excluding that guest’s own audio.
OBS provides per-source faders, meters, and audio monitoring; a compatible audio interface may add software routing and virtual outputs. What can be sent to a separate guest return depends on the production software, interface, and guest platform you use. Do not assume that adding sources to OBS automatically creates the guest’s independent return. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
Build and check the program mix
- Add each source once and label it clearly. Add the host mic, guest audio, game or desktop playback, and any music or alerts you need. Avoid adding the same physical input through two paths unless you intend to mix both; duplicated inputs can make audio louder or create echo.
- Set levels at the source, then in the streaming application. Check the device or application output first, then watch the corresponding OBS meter and adjust its fader. OBS describes the meter’s red zone as close to clipping. There is no single target level established for every mic, game, and production; use the meter and a test recording rather than relying on a universal number.
- Monitor the signal that will actually reach the stream. Listen at the device and use OBS Audio Monitoring to check the mix. If you are using an interface, follow that model’s documentation and your operating system’s routing instructions rather than assuming virtual outputs work the same way on every setup.
- Check the channel layout. OBS says a mono source is heard in both left and right channels. Stereo sources are assigned left and right separately; a one-sided stereo assignment can leave viewers hearing that source in only one channel.
A documented interface example is PreSonus’s Revelator Dynamic: its Universal Control mixer sets mic and playback levels, sends sources to virtual Stream Mix A, and uses Stream Mix A as OBS’s Mic/Aux input. Its Main output is hardware-only for connected headphones or speakers, separating local monitoring from the virtual stream output. This illustrates one possible interface workflow; it is not a required purchase. See PreSonus’s Revelator Dynamic setup guide.

Send a remote guest a mix-minus
A mix-minus is a copy of the audio mix with one or more channels removed. Roland’s official support documentation defines it this way: “It’s basically a copy of your audio mix with one or more channels removed.” For a remote guest, remove that guest’s own incoming audio from the return you send them. They can hear the host and chosen program audio without hearing their own voice echo back after the network delay. See Roland’s V-8HD mix-minus instructions.
Using software with a guest-call mix-minus
Some broadcast software handles the guest return for you. vMix says its Call mixer automatically creates a guest mix-minus. Confirm what the guest hears in your own setup, particularly if you have custom audio sources or routing. The vMix explanation and troubleshooting advice are in its mix-minus basics and troubleshooting guide.

Using an AUX bus on a hardware switcher
If your setup includes a switcher with a separately routable AUX bus, send that bus to the guest and exclude the guest’s channel from it. Roland’s V-8HD example assigns an output to AUX and sets the guest channel’s send to minus infinity. Roland notes that the example’s AUX audio-bus behavior depends on firmware 2.00 or later; check the instructions and firmware applicable to your device before following its menu steps.
Using OBS or an audio interface
OBS’s per-source mixing and monitoring help you build and check the public program, but the OBS audio mixer guide does not establish that every OBS setup can create a separate guest return by itself. Use routing options supported by your chosen software, interface, and guest platform to make an independent return, then verify it with a guest or a controlled test. An interface with virtual outputs may provide separate program and headphone paths, but the exact setup is device- and operating-system-specific.

Prevent echo and rehearse the complete path
A correct mix-minus prevents a guest’s own channel from being sent back in that return, but it cannot stop every echo. An open microphone can capture sound from nearby speakers, or an unintended webcam, camera, or room mic can pick up the program and send it back into the mix.
- Use headphones for the operator and ask guests to use headphones.
- Check that no extra webcam, camera, or room microphone is capturing loud playback.
- Confirm that the stream feed itself is not being monitored through an open mic.
- Check the guest return separately; do not infer what the guest hears from the public program meter.
Before airtime, record a short representative session and listen back on headphones and ordinary speakers. Confirm that the host, guest, game or desktop audio, and music are present at usable levels; the guest does not hear their own delayed voice; and stereo material reaches both channels as intended. OBS recommends checking the source, listening through OBS Audio Monitoring, and recording and listening back before going live. For details, see the OBS guide and vMix’s troubleshooting guide.

Choose a routing approach that fits the production
| Approach | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS source mixer and monitoring | A small production where its available routing meets the need | Source count, whether you can route a separate guest return, and how easily you can monitor and preflight the mix |
| Interface software mixer with virtual outputs | A setup that needs separate headphone and stream mixes or additional physical inputs | Input count, virtual outputs, OS compatibility, monitoring controls, and setup complexity |
| Broadcast software with built-in guest mix-minus | A remote-call production where the software handles the guest path | Guest workflow, return behavior, guest capacity, and operator controls |
| Hardware switcher or mixer AUX bus | A more complex production needing dedicated independent buses | AUX and output count, firmware and routing details, connections, monitoring, and sync |
These are workflow categories, not a tested product ranking. The cited documentation describes particular capabilities and examples, not controlled comparisons.
Troubleshoot the common failures
- The guest hears their own voice delayed: their incoming channel is probably included in the return. Remove it from the guest’s return mix and test again.
- The guest hears an echo even with mix-minus: check for loud speakers at either end, an open room or webcam mic, or another active source capturing playback. Use headphones and disable or mute unintended inputs.
- Viewers hear a source twice or at an unexpectedly high level: look for the same physical input added through two routes. Keep one intentional path, then recheck source and OBS levels.
- Viewers hear stereo audio on one side only: inspect whether the source is stereo and whether its left and right channels are assigned as intended. OBS notes that mono sources are heard in both channels, while stereo channels are assigned separately.
- The meters move but the recording sounds wrong: meter activity alone does not confirm the final result. Listen through application monitoring and record a short test that includes every source and the guest return.
- A documented hardware routing step does not match the device: check the exact model and firmware. The V-8HD AUX example cited here depends on firmware 2.00 or later.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep a prerecorded gaming video live on YouTube after you have finished mixing and preparing it, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. The computer and home connection do not have to stay on; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
