Combine suitable YouTube revenue features with carefully chosen sponsorships or product opportunities, then review performance and eligibility in YouTube Studio.
Start with the audience and format you can serve consistently
A useful strategy is a portfolio: different videos can serve different viewer needs and support different revenue routes. A walkthrough may help someone solve a specific problem; a review may help them choose a game or accessory; a live session may give regular viewers a place to interact. Those formats are examples, not a ranking—your plan should follow your audience and your capacity to produce each one well.
Before choosing a revenue feature, write down the channel’s main audience, geography, recurring formats, and production capacity. Then ask what a viewer gets from each format and which revenue method fits without making the video less useful. A channel with little time for live sessions should not build its plan around live-chat payments; a channel without product-focused videos should not assume Shopping will fit.
- Audience: Who watches, and in which countries? Feature availability and advertiser demand can vary with geography and audience.
- Format: Are viewers coming for long-form guides, Shorts, live interaction, or product-related advice?
- Capacity: Which formats and community commitments can you sustain without lowering quality?
- Control and effort: Is a revenue source recurring, tied to a transaction, dependent on eligibility, or dependent on negotiating with a sponsor?
Know which YouTube Partner Program tier unlocks what
As of October 3, 2026, YouTube’s published higher-tier YPP threshold is 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Meeting the threshold is not acceptance: YouTube reviews the channel, and program conditions still apply.

In eligible countries, expanded YPP offers earlier access to some fan-funding and Shopping features. Its published entry threshold is 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. That lower tier does not itself unlock Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, or YouTube Premium revenue sharing. Country availability and feature-specific rules also apply.
These are separate routes to qualification, not interchangeable ways to count the same activity. Shorts Feed watch hours do not count toward the long-form watch-hour threshold. Paid campaign views and certain private, unlisted, deleted, or otherwise ineligible views do not qualify toward the relevant YPP thresholds. Check the Earn tab in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s current eligibility information before planning around a threshold.
Choose revenue routes that fit your gaming channel
YouTube’s options include ad and Premium revenue sharing, fan funding, and Shopping. Brand partnerships are another route, arranged with a brand rather than paid as a YouTube revenue share. The comparison below describes the published terms and the practical question to ask before adding each route.

These methods can complement one another, but they are not a universal ranking. Compare eligibility timing, geography, audience fit, whether revenue is recurring or transaction-based, operating effort, policy exposure, and how much control you retain. YouTube does not publish a universally best mix.
Read revenue-share percentages without mistaking them for a forecast
The published percentages apply to specific bases: 55% of net Watch Page ad revenue; 70% of net revenue from memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks; and 45% of the revenue allocated to a creator from the Shorts Creator Pool. The Shorts figure is not 45% of all advertising revenue generated across Shorts: it applies to a creator’s allocation, based on their share of eligible views.
YouTube says its partner agreements do not guarantee an amount or whether a creator will be paid. Actual revenue depends on views, audience, advertiser demand, viewer behavior, feature eligibility, and the applicable agreement. These percentages therefore cannot tell you what your channel will earn, and the published platform terms do not establish a general creator-specific RPM or income forecast.

Build a practical plan around the channel’s formats
Use long-form videos for durable viewing
If your channel makes guides, reviews, challenge runs, or other long-form gaming videos, plan around the viewers those videos serve and whether you can qualify for the higher YPP tier. Watch Page ads and Premium may fit eligible public videos, but do not treat either as automatic or assume every video will be suitable for advertising.
Use Shorts as a distinct format, not a shortcut around long-form eligibility
Shorts can be part of a discovery and publishing plan, but their view threshold is separate from the long-form watch-hour route. Sharing Shorts ad revenue requires accepting the Shorts Monetization Module, and sharing applies to eligible views from the acceptance date. YouTube uses eligible engaged views for payment calculations; examples of excluded views include non-original Shorts, artificial or fake views, and views inconsistent with advertiser-friendly guidelines. Build originality and policy compliance into the plan rather than relying on the headline view count alone.
Make live interaction worth returning for
If you regularly stream gameplay and can support live interaction, memberships and Supers may be worth evaluating once the channel qualifies for the relevant feature. Think through what viewers would receive from membership perks and whether you can deliver them reliably. Do not make recurring promises you cannot maintain, and verify feature-specific availability in Studio.

Use Shopping and sponsorships only where they serve viewers
Product recommendations make the most sense when the video’s purpose already involves choosing or using a product. Shopping eligibility is not universal. YouTube announced on September 23, 2026 that its Shopping affiliate program is expanding to 35 countries by the end of 2026; that announcement does not establish that every creator or market is eligible. Confirm the current availability and terms in Studio.
For brand deals, assess whether the sponsor fits the audience and whether the promised deliverable is realistic. When content is influenced by a brand partner in exchange for value such as payment, free products, or sponsorship, YouTube requires the creator to make the branded-content declaration in Studio. That platform declaration does not by itself establish that every disclosure obligation in every jurisdiction has been met.

- Choose a primary audience promise. State what a returning viewer can expect from the channel, then select formats that fulfil that promise.
- Pick one or two revenue routes to evaluate first. Use the comparison above to match routes to format, eligibility, geography, and the work you can actually sustain.
- Check eligibility in YouTube Studio. Review the Earn tab and feature-specific terms; do not infer eligibility from subscriber or view totals alone.
- Set a review interval that fits your publishing cycle. Compare formats and revenue routes using the same period and audience context. Keep track of the work each route requires as well as its results.
- Adjust the mix based on fit, not a single headline figure. If a feature is unavailable, a format is too costly to maintain, or a promotion undermines viewer trust, revise the plan rather than treating that route as mandatory.
Keep a continuous YouTube stream separate from the revenue plan
A continuous stream of pre-recorded gaming videos can be an operating choice for a channel that already has suitable recordings and wants an always-on YouTube presence. It is not itself a monetization feature or a guarantee of viewers or revenue. YouTube’s eligibility, content policies, and the terms for any selected revenue feature still apply; looping content does not bypass them.

Watch for policy changes and channel suitability
YPP access requires compliance with YouTube’s program conditions, and YouTube reviews channels for policy compliance. Content that fails applicable channel monetization or advertiser-friendly requirements may not be eligible for monetization. Review the rules that apply to the channel and each revenue feature before making them central to the plan.
YouTube has announced revised YPP terms effective February 1, 2027. Its August 2026 announcement says new applicants will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days for ad and Premium revenue sharing; the announced fan-funding and Shopping entry thresholds are unchanged. These are future requirements, not the current thresholds described above. YouTube says creators should review and accept updated terms in Studio by January 31, 2027. Creators already in YPP should follow the notice and terms shown for their account.
