What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no proven universal “lightest” screen recorder for a low-end PC. The best starting point depends on what you need to capture, whether your computer has a usable hardware encoder, and the resolution and frame rate you choose. For a quick game or app clip, try Windows Xbox Game Bar; for more control, try OBS Studio and tune it; for Windows hardware-encoding options, consider Bandicam. None of the available evidence establishes that one uses the least resources on every older computer.
Which recorder should you try first?
| Your situation | Option to try | What the evidence supports—and does not |
|---|---|---|
| You need a basic clip of a game or app and want to use a built-in tool. | Xbox Game Bar | Microsoft Support documents game and app clip recording and keyboard controls for recording and microphone toggling. That guidance does not establish whole-desktop capture coverage or show that Game Bar uses fewer resources than other recorders. |
| You want adjustable capture settings and are willing to troubleshoot. | OBS Studio | OBS offers an Auto-Configuration Wizard and configurable recording options. OBS Project cautions that its system requirements do not guarantee successful recording; encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity affect CPU demands. |
| You use Windows and want a recorder whose vendor documents hardware encoding. | Bandicam | Bandicam documents NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync Video and AMD VCE/AMF support. Those feature descriptions are not independent evidence that it is lighter than OBS or Game Bar on your PC. |
These are practical starting points, not a performance ranking. No controlled comparison on representative low-end PCs establishes relative CPU or GPU load, dropped frames or output quality. A machine’s age or a recorder’s minimum requirements alone cannot predict whether a particular game and recording setup will run smoothly.
Choose based on what you are recording
For a simple game or app clip
Try Xbox Game Bar first if the content you want to capture fits its game-and-app recording workflow. It avoids installing a separate recorder, but the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish that it can capture every kind of desktop activity. If your target is not captured as expected, use a recorder whose capture mode supports that target rather than assuming the PC is too weak.
For a configurable recording
OBS Studio is a reasonable choice when you need to adjust the capture and are comfortable checking the result. Its Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that the selected settings will work well on a modest PC. Start with a short recording, check both smoothness and output quality, and change one demanding setting at a time.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When hardware encoding is available
Hardware encoding can move some encoding work off the CPU, but availability depends on the processor or graphics hardware and the software version. Bandicam lists NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync Video and AMD VCE/AMF. OBS Project likewise identifies the encoder as one factor that changes CPU demand. Choose an encoder your system actually supports; do not assume the option is present or faster on every device.
Settings that can reduce recording strain
Lower resolution before expecting the PC to do more
If the recording stutters or the game becomes difficult to use, try capturing at a lower resolution. Bandicam’s vendor guidance recommends reducing the recorded or game resolution to address lag, and OBS Project identifies resolution as one of the variables affecting CPU requirements. The right output size depends on what viewers need to see; a smaller capture may make fine text or visual details harder to read.

Reduce frame rate if the problem persists
Frame rate also affects the work involved in recording. If lowering resolution does not help enough, try a lower frame rate and make another short test. There is no source-backed setting that can be promised to work on every “low-end” PC, so treat the result on your own game, scene and hardware as the deciding factor.
Keep the capture simple while diagnosing
OBS Project says scene complexity affects CPU demand. When troubleshooting, test with only the sources needed for the clip rather than adding extra capture elements. If a simpler scene records better, add sources back one at a time to find what changes the result.

Set up and test before recording a long session
- Pick the recorder for the capture task. Use Game Bar for a supported game or app clip, OBS when you need configuration, or Bandicam if its documented hardware-encoding options match your hardware and needs.
- Check the encoder options. If your PC and chosen recorder support a hardware encoder, try it. Otherwise, do not select an unsupported option; test the available encoder settings instead.
- Begin with a short test recording. Use the game, app and capture mode you intend to record. Check whether the PC remains usable, whether the recording is smooth, and whether the result is clear enough.
- Change resolution or frame rate if performance suffers. Make one adjustment, record another short test, and compare the result. This makes it easier to identify which change helped.
- Check available storage and sustained write performance. A recording needs room to be written to disk. If files fail to save or recording stops, check free space and whether the drive can keep up with sustained writes. An SSD is not established as a fix for CPU or GPU encoding overload.
Fix common low-end-PC recording problems
The game becomes choppy or the recording stutters
- Lower the capture resolution, then test again.
- If needed, lower the frame rate; OBS Project identifies both resolution and frame rate as factors in CPU demand.
- Try a supported hardware encoder. Bandicam documents NVENC, Quick Sync Video and VCE/AMF, while OBS notes that encoder choice affects CPU requirements.
- If you use OBS, simplify the scene during diagnosis. Scene complexity can add CPU demand.
OBS has problems on a laptop with two GPUs
A laptop may have integrated and discrete GPUs, and OBS runs on one of them. OBS’s GPU guidance explains that capture or performance problems can occur when the application being captured and OBS use different GPUs. Open Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics to assign OBS, following OBS’s guidance for your capture mode: its preferred GPU assignment differs between Game/Window Capture and Display Capture. Do not assume one GPU choice is best for both modes.
The recording stops or will not save
Check the destination drive’s free space and sustained write performance. Storage trouble and encoding overload are different problems: a drive that cannot keep up can interfere with writing the recording, while an SSD alone does not establish that a CPU or GPU can encode the chosen capture smoothly.

You are not sure whether the PC or settings are the problem
Run short tests with a simpler scene and lower resolution or frame rate, then add complexity back gradually. OBS Project explicitly cautions that meeting baseline platform requirements does not ensure a system can record successfully. A result on your actual workload is more useful than treating a minimum requirement as a performance promise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a recorder’s requirements can—and cannot—tell you
Minimum requirements help identify basic compatibility; they are not a guarantee of smooth recording. The same PC can behave differently depending on the game or app, capture mode, encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Since the available sources do not provide controlled low-end-PC benchmarks across these recorders, claims that one is definitively the lightest, or that a specified resolution and frame rate will work on any modest computer, would go beyond the evidence.
