How to Stream a Prerecorded Video on YouTube Live with Subtitles

Use YouTube Studio and an encoder to send a prerecorded loop to YouTube Live, then deliver captions through HTTP POST or embedded EIA-608/CEA-708.

To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live with subtitles, create or schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio, then use an encoder to send the video to YouTube with the event’s server URL and stream key. Live captions must be delivered separately—either by HTTP POST to YouTube’s caption ingestion URL or embedded in the video stream as EIA-608 and/or CEA-708. A subtitle file beside your video does not automatically become live captions.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; confirm current eligibility in YouTube Help because account policies can change.
  • The prerecorded video and a caption workflow that can deliver captions through one of YouTube’s documented live-caption methods.
  • An encoder that can play the file, send a live feed to YouTube, and repeat the program if you want a loop. YouTube’s documentation does not prescribe a universal loop command or guarantee that any particular encoder can do this.
  • A reliable upload connection with enough capacity for the selected video settings.

YouTube says creators do not need expensive equipment to start. The difficult part of this workflow is making sure the encoder can loop the file and that the chosen caption workflow is compatible with the live output.

Create the YouTube Live broadcast

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
  2. Create a new stream or schedule one in Live Control Room. Scheduling lets you promote the event before it starts.
  3. Choose the encoder workflow and copy the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube. The encoder uses these to send the feed to the right broadcast.
  4. Keep the stream key private. It functions as a credential that allows an encoder to send content to your YouTube stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace it in the encoder.

YouTube’s API distinguishes the broadcast (the event) from the live stream (the delivery settings). That distinction mainly matters when automating broadcasts with the API; for a normal setup, use Studio’s Live Control Room.

Configure the encoder for the prerecorded loop

  1. Open an encoder that can read your video file and send a live output. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key.
  2. Set the encoder to repeat the file if you need a continuous loop. Check the encoder’s own current instructions for the loop setting; YouTube does not define one setting that works across encoders.
  3. Choose output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together. YouTube’s encoder settings page provides recommended bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec, rather than a single bitrate for every stream.
  4. For typical live content, YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and support for up to 60 fps. Match the encoder’s output to the settings and bitrate guidance on YouTube’s current encoder page.
  5. Check that the encoder is sending both picture and sound, then wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room.

YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into formats for viewers. Sending a higher-bitrate feed does not mean viewers will all receive it at that bitrate; choose settings your connection can sustain steadily.

Choose how to send live captions

YouTube’s LiveBroadcasts API documents two ways to deliver closed captions. The caption option must be supported by your encoder or a separate captioning workflow; the API documentation does not say that attaching an SRT or VTT sidecar file to a live event automatically makes it live captions.

Caption method How it reaches YouTube What the format documentation says What your setup must handle
HTTP POST Captions are sent to the caption ingestion URL associated with the livestream. The API reference describes HTTP POST delivery but does not name a sidecar file format. Your encoder or caption workflow must send captions to the provided ingestion endpoint.
Embedded captions Captions are encoded into the outgoing video stream. YouTube names EIA-608 and/or CEA-708. The encoder and output chain must embed a supported caption format in the video feed.

Whichever route you use, verify that captions appear and match the spoken content. Do not assume a subtitle track that plays locally will be transmitted in a form YouTube accepts as live captions.

Set latency and test the complete stream

YouTube’s LiveBroadcasts API reference says closed captions are not supported with ultra-low latency. If captions are required, choose normal or low latency rather than ultra-low, then test your specific encoder and caption workflow. The documentation does not guarantee every third-party setup will work under every other latency setting.

Before announcing or starting the event, run a test that includes the actual file and all the components viewers will receive:

  • Confirm caption timing, readability, and delivery in the live output.
  • Check that the file repeats as intended, including the transition at the loop boundary.
  • Verify the stream on the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.

YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Testing the loop boundary and caption timing is especially useful for this prerecorded-file workflow.

Start, monitor, and end the broadcast

  1. Start sending the feed from the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room.
  2. For a scheduled event, select Go live after the preview is available. Monitor stream health and messages while the event runs.
  3. When finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending content from the encoder, following the controls in the Live Control Room and encoder.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream that runs 12 hours or longer.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No preview appears The encoder is not reaching YouTube or has incorrect connection details. Confirm the server URL and stream key match the event, the encoder is running, and the stream key has not been reset. Check Live Control Room for stream-health messages.
Video plays, but captions do not appear The subtitle sidecar may not be sent as live captions, or the selected delivery method may not be configured. Confirm whether the setup uses HTTP POST to the caption ingestion URL or embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions. Verify support and configuration with the encoder or caption-workflow documentation.
Captions appear late or out of sync The caption timing or the encoder/output chain may not match the video. Test the actual file, caption method, and latency setting before going live. YouTube’s documentation does not specify a universal fix for third-party synchronization issues.
Captions fail with ultra-low latency YouTube’s API reference says closed captions are not supported with ultra-low latency. Switch to normal or low latency and test the selected caption method again.
The stream stops at the end of the file The encoder may not be configured to repeat the file. Check the encoder’s loop setting and test through a complete file ending and restart. YouTube does not prescribe a universal repeat setting.
Quality drops or the stream becomes unstable The selected output may exceed what the connection can sustain, or the encoder settings may not match YouTube’s guidance. Review stream-health messages, verify resolution/frame rate/bitrate against YouTube’s current settings page, and test a stable configuration.
