You can loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from an old laptop using OBS Studio’s built-in Media Source: add your local video, enable Loop, connect OBS to YouTube Studio with a stream key, and start the stream. Whether the laptop can keep that stream running reliably depends on its processor, encoder, cooling, scene, output settings and internet connection—so test the exact setup before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Check YouTube Live access first
Before configuring OBS, confirm that your channel can livestream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the day you plan to broadcast. YouTube also says streamers must be at least 16 years old. Set up the looping video in OBS
Add a local Media Source
- Open OBS Studio and create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source, then select the local video file you want to play.
- In the source properties, enable Loop so playback starts again when the file reaches its end. Check that the audio option is enabled if the video should include sound.
- Arrange the source in the preview and confirm it fills the canvas as intended. Add only overlays or other elements you actually need.
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM among the supported video formats. The Media Source also offers hardware decoding when available; it is off by default. OBS’s Media Sources guide covers the source options.
For a playlist rather than one file
OBS’s separate VLC Video source can play a playlist and loop the playlist. It requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. For a single local file, the built-in Media Source is the simpler choice.

Keep the scene light
Use a modest scene with the video and essential overlays. High-resolution media, browser sources, filters and complex scenes consume resources. Scaling a large source down does not necessarily make it as easy to process as a source closer to the output size. OBS notes that system compatibility alone does not guarantee reliable streaming; actual performance depends on the workload and settings. Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to use the Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream.
- In the stream setup, get the stream key and enter it in OBS’s stream settings. Follow the current YouTube and OBS prompts for the server and connection details.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start streaming from OBS, then confirm the preview and stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room before making the broadcast public.
YouTube describes encoder streaming as suitable for productions with sources such as gameplay, overlays or external audio/video. Its encoder help explains the setup process.

Choose settings your laptop and upload connection can sustain
Start with a conservative output
Run an upload-speed test and choose a quality that the connection can deliver consistently, rather than setting the highest resolution by default. YouTube recommends testing before going live and watching the stream-health indicators. Its current H.264 recommendations include these video bitrates:

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a promise that your particular connection can sustain them. Leave upload capacity for normal network variation and other household use. Refer to YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current table and guidance.

Match the encoder protocol requirements
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream as it travels to YouTube’s servers. In the Live Control Room, YouTube detects encoder resolution and frame rate by default; a custom stream key can be used for manual resolution settings. Verify the available options in the current Studio and OBS interfaces.
Reduce load if OBS struggles
If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, or playback becomes unstable, lower the output resolution and frame rate, then simplify the scene. Lower resolution reduces encoder load; fewer frames reduce rendering and encoding work. There is no universal “old laptop” preset: the suitable settings depend on the individual machine, the file, the scene and the connection.

Test for the full planned broadcast
- Connect the laptop to reliable power and use the strongest available internet connection.
- Run a test with the exact video, audio, overlays and OBS output settings you intend to use. Keep it unlisted if that is appropriate for your test.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and OBS for rendering or encoding issues. Check that the video restarts at the end and that its audio behaves as intended.
- For a long or continuous broadcast, test for the full duration you expect to run. A short successful test cannot establish that an older laptop will remain stable for hours or days.
Heat, sleep settings, power loss or a dropped connection can stop the stream. These are device- and network-specific risks; compatibility with OBS does not certify a particular laptop for continuous operation. YouTube also requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Make sure you have rights to the video and audio you broadcast, and review YouTube’s rules on copyright and reused content before looping material.
