Add a Media Source and enable Loop for one video, or use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist for a playlist. Test playback, audio, and stream output before going live.
Scene Collection vs. Profile: keep the loop setup separate
An OBS Scene Collection stores scenes and sources, including Global Audio Sources. That makes it the right place to keep a dedicated loop scene separate from your gaming, podcast, or recording layouts. Switch collections when you need a different set of scenes and sources. OBS Scene Collections documentation (dated January 14, 2022) also notes that collections do not store output settings.
A Profile stores settings such as Stream, Video, and Output. Use a Profile for the YouTube connection and stream configuration, and a Scene Collection for the loop scene itself. OBS supports combining profiles and collections, so a dedicated loop collection does not require duplicating every profile setting. See OBS Profiles documentation (January 14, 2022).
Create the dedicated collection and loop scene
- Create or select the collection. In OBS, open the Scene Collection menu and create a new collection for the loop stream. Give it an unmistakable name, such as “YouTube Loop,” so you can distinguish it from other setups. Menu wording or placement can vary by OBS version.
- Add a scene. In the Scenes panel, create a scene for the looping video. Keep it dedicated to this stream so changes to other collections do not clutter the setup.
- Add the video source. In Sources, add a Media Source, choose the local video file, and enable Loop in the source properties. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Check that the selected file plays and that its audio is appropriate.
- Arrange the scene. Add only needed text, logos, or other overlays. OBS composites sources in list order: sources higher in the list can appear over sources beneath them. Check the preview for framing, visibility, and audio before moving on.
OBS documents media-source options for how a source behaves when it is hidden, including continuing, pausing, or stopping playback. If the source may be hidden during scene changes, choose the behavior that fits your intended loop and verify it in a test. The relevant details are in OBS Media Sources documentation (January 11, 2022).

Choose a single video or a playlist
| Source | Best fit | Loop setting | Dependency and consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local video file | Enable Loop to replay when the file ends. | Built into OBS; supported formats are listed in the OBS documentation. |
| VLC Video | A playlist of media | Enable Loop Playlist to restart after the list ends. | VLC must be installed for the source to appear. OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. |
Use Media Source for a straightforward single-file loop. Choose VLC Video when you need a playlist. The documentation establishes these workflow differences, not a universal quality or reliability advantage for either option.
Set YouTube and output settings in a Profile
- Select or create a Profile. Use a profile intended for the YouTube stream, or create one so its connection and output settings are distinct from other broadcast setups.
- Configure the YouTube connection and output. Set the Stream, Video, and Output options in the Profile. A Scene Collection will not carry those settings when you switch collections.
- Check the preview and stream configuration together. Select the loop collection and the intended Profile, then confirm the expected scene and YouTube/output settings are active before broadcasting.
Exact setting values depend on your content and connection; the cited OBS documentation does not prescribe a bitrate, resolution, or frame rate for this particular loop-stream use. For setup guidance, see the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Test before starting the planned stream
- Play the media source and watch it through a file ending or playlist restart to confirm looping.
- Listen for audio problems and inspect overlays, framing, and source visibility.
- Run a short test recording or stream and confirm that the selected Profile sends the expected output.
- Correct any issues and test again before relying on the setup for a longer broadcast.
OBS recommends testing for a few minutes rather than jumping directly into a first stream; its Quick Start Guide and Overview Guide describe setup and testing. A loop setting repeats media; it is not an OBS or YouTube uptime guarantee, and these OBS pages do not establish YouTube eligibility or continuous-stream limits.
Troubleshooting the loop scene
- The video stops at the end. Open the Media Source properties and verify Loop is enabled. For a playlist, verify Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
- VLC Video is missing. Install VLC. If using 64-bit OBS, the OBS documentation says to use 64-bit VLC.
- The wrong overlay appears in front. Reorder sources in the Sources list; higher-listed sources can composite over those below.
- Playback changes when switching scenes. Check the source’s hidden-visibility behavior and select whether playback should continue, pause, or stop while hidden.
- The scene looks right but the stream settings are wrong. Confirm the intended Profile is selected. Scene Collections store scenes and sources, not output settings.
