For ordinary Facebook video posts, Meta’s current guidance says videos are shared as Reels, with no length or format restrictions. That does not mean Meta publishes one universal export-spec sheet: the official pages reviewed do not establish a required resolution, codec, container, frame rate, or maximum file size for organic uploads. Choose dimensions and encoding for the way people will watch your video, rather than treating an unofficial number as a platform-wide rule.
What are Facebook’s current video requirements?
Meta announced on June 17, 2025, and updated its announcement on July 14, 2025, that Facebook would share all new videos as Reels, removing the need to choose between uploading a video and a Reel. Meta says Facebook Reels have no length or format restrictions. Facebook Help Center’s updated discovery guidance likewise says Reels can be any length or orientation after the change.
These statements describe broad publishing eligibility, not a technical export table. In the official organic guidance reviewed, Meta does not specify a universal pixel resolution, aspect ratio, codec, file container, frame rate, or file-size ceiling. If your upload fails, check the current in-product error message and upload guidance for your account rather than relying on a precise limit that Meta’s cited guidance does not establish.
What video size and orientation should you use?
Meta’s current organic guidance does not require one orientation: its Help Center says Reels can have any orientation. Choose a frame that suits the footage and the viewing experience you want. Vertical framing is a reasonable creative choice for a phone-first video, while horizontal framing may better preserve gameplay, a presentation, or other wide footage. These are production choices, not stated universal organic upload requirements.

Do not confuse advertising recommendations with rules for ordinary posts. For Reels ads, Meta recommends 9:16 vertical video, audio, and keeping key messages within the safe zone. That guidance is for paid creative; it does not establish a mandatory 9:16 size for organic Facebook video.
How long can a Facebook video be?
Meta’s June 2025 announcement says Facebook Reels have no length restrictions, and the updated Help Center discovery page says they can be any length. A separate Facebook Help Center page still contains an “up to 90 seconds” statement. Because that wording conflicts with the later announcement and its publication date is not shown on the page reviewed, treat it as legacy or context-specific text, not as the current universal limit.

Which format, codec, frame rate, or file size is supported?
The official organic pages reviewed do not give a universal answer for these technical fields. In particular, they do not establish one required MP4 or MOV container, H.264 or other codec, frame rate, bitrate, resolution, or maximum file size for every Facebook video. Avoid presenting values from third-party spec roundups as official Meta-wide limits unless you can verify them against current Meta guidance for the exact upload type and placement.
Captions and accessibility
Facebook Help Center documents adding captions to a video posted to a profile or Page by uploading a SubRip (.srt) file. Captions can make spoken content more accessible and useful when viewers watch without sound. The cited caption guidance does not specify video encoding requirements.

Facebook video publishing checklist
- Choose the right publishing context: use the organic guidance for a regular post or Reel, and use the separate ad guidance for paid Reels creative.
- Pick framing for the footage: Meta’s current organic guidance permits any orientation; 9:16 is an ad recommendation, not an organic mandate.
- Do not assume a universal technical ceiling: the official organic pages reviewed do not provide universal codec, container, resolution, frame-rate, or file-size limits.
- Add captions where useful: Facebook Help Center supports SRT caption uploads for profile and Page videos.
- Resolve conflicting duration advice by date: the 90-second line on an older Help Center page conflicts with Meta’s later no-length-restrictions announcement.
