To start a podcast, settle on a repeatable show idea, record and edit a test episode, then publish through an RSS podcast host or a self-managed feed. Submit the RSS feed to directories such as Apple Podcasts, and publish video episodes or use RSS ingestion on YouTube if that option is available in your region. You do not need a particular microphone or a large studio to begin.
Plan a show you can keep making
Before buying equipment, define the show’s audience and promise: who it serves, what each episode covers, and why a listener might return. Choose a format you can repeat, such as a solo explanation, an interview, or a discussion. Decide whether the podcast is audio-first or will also have video, roughly how long episodes should be, and how often you can publish consistently. These are planning choices, not platform requirements.
For a video-games podcast, narrow the premise enough to guide episode ideas: a particular game or genre, industry news, reviews, community stories, or a recurring discussion format. A clear scope makes it easier to prepare topics and tell listeners what the show is about.
Choose a practical starter recording setup
A computer or phone, a recording app, and a microphone are enough to make a first recording. A USB microphone is an optional, straightforward category to consider, not a required purchase. The platform requirements covered here specify delivered audio formats; they do not establish a best microphone, recording app, or hardware kit.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use what you already have for a short test. Record in a quiet space, listen back on headphones, and check that speech is clear and the recording is not distorted or overwhelmed by background noise. If you add equipment or software later, choose it based on the specific problem you need to solve rather than assuming a more elaborate setup is necessary.
Record and prepare your first episode
- Prepare a simple outline. Note the opening, main points, transitions, and ending. An outline can keep a solo episode or interview on track without requiring a word-for-word script.
- Make a test recording. Speak at your normal volume, then listen back for clarity, unwanted noise, and recording problems before doing the full episode.
- Record the episode. Leave a moment of silence at the start if useful for checking room noise, and pause to redo a line if something goes wrong. Keep a copy of the original recording before editing.
- Edit for clarity. Remove obvious mistakes and long accidental pauses, then listen through the result. Do not edit so aggressively that speech becomes difficult to follow.
- Export an accepted audio file. Apple Podcasts accepts MP3 or AAC audio for RSS shows. For 44.1 or 48 kHz RSS audio, Apple lists 64–128 kbps for mono and 128–256 kbps for stereo. Apple says AAC can offer better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate and recommends MP4 packaging for AAC to support streaming efficiency and seeking. Smaller files can come with an audible quality trade-off.
Choose how to host and manage the RSS feed
An RSS feed carries show and episode information, including links to episode media. A podcast hosting provider can create and manage that feed and may assist with submission or other publishing tasks. You can also generate and host your own feed; Apple documents both routes, without naming one as universally best.

| Approach | What you manage | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Podcast hosting provider | The provider typically packages show information and episode media into an RSS feed and may offer feed-management tools. | Feed management, directory-submission workflow, analytics, and any relevant features such as chapters, transcripts, subscriptions, or advertising. Confirm whether each feature is included in the provider and plan you choose. |
| Self-managed RSS | You generate and host the feed, maintain its structure and episode details, and ensure the linked audio remains available. | Control over the feed, technical upkeep, server support, and the directory-submission process. |
Apple’s RSS submission requirements include a publicly addressable, technically compliant feed, required tags, at least one episode, and artwork. Apple’s guidance also calls for properly formed episode enclosure details and server support for HTTP HEAD and byte-range requests. If you do not want to maintain feed and server details yourself, a host may simplify that work; compare its actual workflow and plan features before committing.
Submit an RSS podcast to Apple Podcasts
- Prepare the feed. Check Apple’s current technical requirements for the feed, required tags, episode enclosure details, artwork, and server behavior. The feed must be publicly addressable for directory submission.
- Check how the show appears. Apple suggests adding the show by URL in the Podcasts app so you can inspect the artwork and media presentation.
- Validate the feed. Use Apple Podcasts Connect to validate the technical structure, tags, cover art, and episode files. Fix reported issues and validate again as needed.
- Submit through Apple Podcasts Connect. You need an Apple Podcasts Connect account to submit an RSS show. Include the compliant feed, at least one episode, and artwork.
- Distinguish validation from approval. Passing technical validation does not itself guarantee that Apple will approve the show’s content.
Apple’s requirements can change, so consult its RSS feed requirements, audio format requirements, and validation guidance while preparing a submission.

Publish on YouTube as well
YouTube represents a podcast as a playlist, with episodes as videos. If you have video episodes, upload them and organize them as a podcast playlist. YouTube’s guidance says podcast playlists should contain full-length episodes in the intended listening order.
In selected countries and regions, YouTube Studio also supports submitting an RSS feed. This can create static-art videos from audio episodes and automatically upload newly added episodes. Eligibility is regional, so check YouTube’s current availability information rather than assuming RSS ingestion is offered where you are. This RSS route distributes the episodes to YouTube and YouTube Music only; it does not submit the feed to other podcast platforms.

For a video-first or video-supported show, native video uploads let you publish the video you created. For an audio-first show, RSS ingestion may reduce the need to make a separate video for each episode where the feature is available. See YouTube’s podcast guidance and RSS setup instructions for current steps and eligibility.

Use artwork and audio you have the right to publish, and check the relevant platform policies before adding music, clips, or other third-party material.
