Use OBS’s VLC Video Source: add your video files to its playlist, then enable Shuffle Playlist in the source properties. VLC must be installed, and its version should match OBS’s architecture (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS). Connect OBS to YouTube Live and test the playlist before broadcasting.
What you need before setting up the playlist
- Video files saved somewhere the computer running OBS can access.
- OBS and VLC installed on that computer. OBS lists VLC Video Source for Windows, macOS, and Linux; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says channel verification is required and the channel must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
Add a shuffled playlist in OBS
- Create or open a scene. In OBS, select the scene that should show the videos, or create a new scene.
- Add the playlist source. In the Sources dock, click the + button and choose VLC Video Source. Create a new source or select an existing one. OBS’s source guide distinguishes this playlist-capable source from the ordinary Media Source, which is intended for a media file.
- Add your videos. In the VLC Video Source properties, add the video files you want included in the playlist. Check that the listed paths point to files available to the OBS computer.
- Turn on shuffle. In the same properties window, enable Shuffle Playlist. OBS describes it as: “Specifies if the source should randomize the media files being played or stay in the order of the file list.”
- Choose whether to loop. Leave Loop Playlist enabled if you want playback to continue after the list reaches its end; OBS documents it as on by default. Shuffle controls whether files play in the listed order, while looping controls whether playback continues after the playlist ends.
- Fit the video into the scene. Close the properties and position or resize the source in the preview. If the scene includes overlays, sources higher in the Sources list appear above sources lower in the list.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions if you need to locate its stream URL and key.
- In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service if that option is available, then enter or select the stream key. Otherwise, choose a custom streaming service and enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder settings.
- Keep the stream key private: YouTube says it tells the encoder where to send the feed. If the key is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Check the YouTube preview, video framing, audio, and that the VLC playlist plays as expected before the public broadcast. OBS recommends a short test stream or recording, and YouTube advises checking the preview and stream integrity before an event; see OBS’s streaming guide and YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
VLC Video Source or Media Source?
| OBS source | Best fit | Playlist and shuffle | VLC required |
|---|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source | Several files that should play as a playlist | Playlist support, including Shuffle Playlist | Yes |
| Media Source | A single audio or video file | Not the documented route for a multi-file shuffled playlist | No |
For this multi-video use case, choose VLC Video Source; no additional plugin is needed for the documented shuffle workflow.
What shuffle does—and what OBS does not specify
OBS documents shuffle as randomizing the media files rather than keeping the file-list order. Its documentation does not describe the randomization algorithm or promise a particular repeat pattern. Do not assume that every clip will play exactly once before any clip repeats; the documented control does not establish that guarantee.
Copyright and YouTube rules still apply
Shuffle changes playback order; it does not grant permission to broadcast the videos or music. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s rules for your channel and content. Neither OBS nor YouTube supplies rights to third-party recordings simply because they can be added to a playlist.

Troubleshooting
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC and restart OBS. Match architectures—64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- A video does not load: Confirm the file still exists at the listed path and is accessible to the computer running OBS. Remove and re-add it if the file was moved.
- Videos play in list order: Open the VLC Video Source properties and check that Shuffle Playlist is enabled.
- Playback stops at the end: Check whether Loop Playlist is enabled if you want the list to start again after its last file.
- You cannot start a YouTube stream: Confirm that live streaming is enabled, the channel meets YouTube’s verification and restriction requirements, and the stream URL and key are correct. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives the stream but the picture or sound is wrong: Inspect the OBS preview and mixer, check scene sizing and source order, and run another short test before going live publicly.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel playing uploaded videos continuously, StreamNeo is an alternative to running OBS on a home computer. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a camera-based live feed. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
