To loop prerecorded clips into a continuous YouTube Live stream with FFmpeg, put the files in a concat-demuxer playlist, then send the resulting stream to YouTube’s encoder URL and stream key. Use the concat demuxer with stream copy only when the files’ streams and parameters are compatible; otherwise, encode them to a consistent output. The command below is a starting point, not a guarantee for every media set or FFmpeg build.
What you need before starting
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can stay on and maintain a steady upload connection for the duration of the stream.
- Local video files that you have permission to stream. For stream copy, their streams, codecs, and parameters must be suitable for joining and muxing continuously.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, with an encoder stream configured in YouTube Live Control Room.
- The YouTube server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, or logs.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to create a live stream and obtain the encoder details: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Create an FFmpeg concat playlist
Save a UTF-8 text file named playlist.txt in the directory containing the clips. With the explicit ffconcat format, the header must be the first line:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'
Each file path must resolve to a file FFmpeg can access. You can use paths relative to the playlist or absolute paths. Quotes and special characters in filenames require correct ffconcat escaping; renaming files to simple names can avoid mistakes. The format also supports per-file directives such as duration and inpoint, but they are not needed for a basic playlist. See the FFmpeg documentation for concat syntax and directives.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When stream copy is suitable
The concat demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding. That can avoid the extra encoding work, but it is not a safe assumption for arbitrary MP4 files: check that their stream layouts, codecs, and relevant parameters match and that the result is suitable for continuous muxing and YouTube ingest.
When to encode
If the clips differ in ways that prevent reliable stream-copy concatenation, normalize or re-encode them to a consistent output. FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the concat demuxer from the concat filter, which is the documented alternative when re-encoding is needed: FFmpeg FAQ. Encoding settings may need adjustment to match the source media and the YouTube settings you choose.

Start a continuous RTMPS stream
For compatible inputs that you want FFmpeg to encode to a consistent H.264/AAC output, this command is a practical starting pattern. Replace the environment-variable values with the encoder URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
Set YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL to the server URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY to the key from YouTube; the exact shell syntax for setting environment variables varies by operating system and shell. Keep the key private. This command uses -stream_loop -1 to request indefinite input looping and -re to read file input at real-time pace. -safe 0 relaxes concat path restrictions, so use it only with a playlist you control. The H.264 encoder, AAC audio, and FLV muxer are common RTMP-style choices, but confirm current YouTube guidance and test with your media before relying on them.

Using stream copy instead
Only after confirming that the inputs’ streams and parameters work together, you can omit the video and audio encoding options and use -c copy in their place. A stream-copy command avoids re-encoding but does not make incompatible files compatible. If playback, timestamps, or ingest fail, normalize the files or use an encoding workflow instead.
Choose encoder settings and verify the stream
YouTube currently recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, with frame rates up to 60 fps; bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the latest YouTube encoder settings and choose a bitrate your encoder and sustained upload connection can support.

- Start the FFmpeg command and watch its output for input, encoding, or connection errors.
- Open the stream preview in YouTube Live Control Room and check video, audio, and stream health.
- When the stream is scheduled and awaiting confirmation, use the Live Control Room’s Go live control as required by your setup.
- Test a representative section with motion and audio before depending on the stream unattended.
YouTube transcodes ingested video into viewer formats. FFmpeg’s local output settings and the viewer’s eventual playback options are therefore not necessarily identical.

Plan for the computer and connection
This DIY method depends on the computer running FFmpeg, the media files remaining accessible, and the upload connection sustaining the chosen bitrate. If any of those fail, the outgoing stream can stop or become unhealthy. For unattended use, monitor FFmpeg and YouTube stream health rather than assuming the process will recover from every interruption.

Understand YouTube’s archive window
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single longer continuous stream will be archived in full under that rule; verify current behavior for your channel and plan the stream lifecycle separately for longer runs. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Do not confuse concat with HLS
The FFmpeg concat playlist is an input list of local files. HLS is a separate YouTube ingestion route with its own segment and rolling-playlist requirements, and YouTube Help describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP. Do not send the concat text file as if it were an HLS media playlist. If you specifically need HLS ingestion, consult YouTube’s HLS setup guide and the YouTube HLS ingestion documentation.
Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg cannot open a listed file: Check the path relative to the playlist, spelling, permissions, and filename escaping. Confirm the file is accessible before launching the stream.
- The concat input opens but clips fail at transitions: The inputs may not be compatible for stream copy. Normalize or re-encode them to consistent streams, then retest the playlist.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm you used the current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, that the key was copied exactly, and that the chosen protocol and encoding settings match YouTube’s current guidance.
- Stream health is poor or the connection drops: Check the outgoing bitrate against sustained upload capacity, reduce the target if needed, and inspect encoder and network stability. YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Looping or playback timing is unexpected: Verify the playlist order and file paths, then test transitions locally. Concat directives such as
durationorinpointcan affect behavior and should only be added when needed and supported by the media.
