Open the built-in VLC Video Source properties in OBS and check every playlist entry for an outdated file or folder path. Correct any entry that points to a moved, renamed, disconnected, or remounted location. If the paths are valid, check Loop Playlist and Visibility Behaviour: playback can stop at the end of a list, or when a scene change hides the source, for different reasons.
A changed path can leave a playlist entry pointing somewhere the file is no longer available. That is a useful first place to investigate, but it does not establish the cause of every playlist stoppage.
First confirm which OBS source you are using
These steps apply to OBS Studio’s built-in VLC Video Source, which supports playlists and uses VLC libraries for extended media support. It is different from a regular Media Source and from the third-party Media Playlist Source plugin. Check the source name in OBS before changing settings; the source types do not necessarily have the same options or behavior.
If VLC Video Source is missing when you add a source, OBS says VLC must be installed for it to appear. OBS also specifies 64-bit VLC when you use 64-bit OBS. The OBS help page is titled Media Sources.

Repair playlist entries after a path change
- Open the source properties. In OBS, select the VLC Video Source in the Sources list, then open its properties.
- Inspect each playlist item. Look for paths that still name the file’s former folder, the old filename, or a drive letter or network location that is no longer available. A drive that was disconnected or remounted can make a previously valid location unreachable.
- Correct or remove affected entries. Point each moved or renamed item to its current file location. If an item is no longer needed, remove it from the playlist. OBS’s source implementation handles missing-file events by allowing a replacement path or removing the missing entry if no replacement is supplied; that is not a diagnosis of why a particular playlist stopped.
- Apply the change and test playback. Confirm that the corrected file can be reached at its current location and that the playlist advances as expected. If more than one entry changed location, check each one rather than assuming the first repair fixed the whole list.
A path repair addresses an unavailable media file. It does not change whether playback should repeat after the final item or continue when the source is hidden; check those settings separately.
Check looping and scene visibility
If playback stops at the end of the playlist
In the VLC Video Source properties, check Loop Playlist. OBS documents this option as controlling whether playback restarts after it runs out of media files. Turn it on if you expect the list to repeat; a valid path alone does not make a playlist loop.

If playback stops when you switch scenes
Check Visibility Behaviour. OBS documents the default as Stop when not visible, restart when visible. If the source is hidden by a scene change, that behavior can explain a stop that coincides with switching scenes. It is separate from path validity: changing visibility behavior will not repair a stale file location.
If playback stops at another point
Note whether it stops immediately after editing a path, when a particular item is reached, at the end of the list, or during a scene transition. Those patterns narrow down which check to make next, but the available documentation does not identify a single cause for every case. The VLC source also has a Network caching setting, documented with a 400 ms default; that is a caching default, not a path-repair setting or a statistic about playlist failures.

When to consider Media Playlist Source
Media Playlist Source is a separate third-party OBS plugin, not an update to the built-in VLC Video Source. Its listing describes it as using Media Source internally and allowing playlist edits during playback, including reordering without restarting playback. Consider it only after confirming that your built-in source’s paths are valid and that loop and visibility settings match what you want.
| Situation | Practical next step | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| A playlist item points to a moved or unavailable file | Repair that item’s path or remove it. | OBS’s implementation handles missing-file events through a replacement path or removal; it does not establish the cause of an individual failure. |
| The list stops after its final item | Check Loop Playlist. | OBS documents this setting as controlling whether playback restarts after the list runs out of media files. |
| The source stops when a scene changes | Check Visibility Behaviour. | OBS documents stop-when-hidden/restart-when-visible as the default behavior. |
| Paths are valid, but continuation still fails around transitions or repeated paths | Investigate Media Playlist Source as a separate option and verify version compatibility before installing. | Its 0.1.3 release notes dated April 13, 2025 list fixes for continuing after a transition and when the next item uses the same video path. Those are plugin-specific fixes, not a verified fix for stale paths in the built-in source. |
Plugin compatibility and installation details have changed across releases. Check the current plugin listing and release history for requirements that match your OBS version and operating system before installing. Do not assume a plugin-specific fix applies to the built-in VLC Video Source.

Troubleshooting checklist
- VLC Video Source does not appear: Verify VLC is installed. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC as OBS specifies.
- One item fails but others play: Inspect that item’s filename and full current location; a single stale entry can affect playback when the list reaches it.
- The playlist ends and stays stopped: Check whether Loop Playlist is enabled.
- It stops after a scene switch: Check whether the source became hidden and review Visibility Behaviour.
- All paths look current, but the list still fails to continue: Record the OBS version, operating system, VLC version, when the stop occurs, and whether it follows a transition or repeated path. Then check plugin compatibility if evaluating Media Playlist Source.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your underlying goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream live around the clock, rather than to repair this OBS source, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
