For one prerecorded YouTube stream, start with a spare PC if it can encode your actual video reliably and your home internet and power are dependable. Choose a VPS when remote administration and keeping the encoder off your home equipment matter more—and only after checking that the specific plan can handle the encoding workload and sustained outbound traffic. Neither option is a universal winner on cost or reliability; test the complete setup and plan how you will detect and recover from interruptions.
What the choice really depends on
A 24/7 stream is a continuous workload, not just a video that plays once. The host must encode or transmit the loop, maintain a connection to YouTube, and recover from problems. A PC uses resources you already own but depends on your home power, router and ISP. A VPS moves the machine into a provider’s environment, but still depends on its assigned resources, network terms, software and your administration.
OBS cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream successfully. Resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity all affect the result. When a spare PC is the better fit
A spare PC is a practical first choice when it can sustain the chosen encoder settings, your upload connection has reliable headroom, and local outages are an acceptable risk. You avoid renting a virtual machine, but the stream remains dependent on the home setup. Measure the PC’s power draw and use your own electricity rate to understand its running cost; do not treat already-owned hardware as cost-free.

Check hardware encoding
OBS supports Intel Quick Sync Video on Windows and Linux. OBS recommends 4th-generation Intel Core processors (Haswell) or newer for better quality than early Quick Sync generations. When a VPS is the better fit
A VPS makes sense if you want to administer the encoder remotely and avoid leaving a PC at home as the streaming host. Before choosing one, confirm that its actual CPU or available hardware encoder can handle your video and settings, and check its sustained outbound capacity and included traffic. AWS’s EC2 documentation describes bandwidth by instance type and operating conditions; it does not provide a universal bandwidth figure for all VPS providers or plans. Include the recurring instance, storage and possible traffic charges in your comparison. Prices and terms vary by provider, region and configuration, so compare a current quote with the measured power cost of your own PC rather than relying on a generic claim that cloud hosting is cheaper.
Set up and test the stream on either host
- Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube requires live streaming to be enabled for an eligible, verified channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so allow time before a planned start. YouTube’s encoder setup and archive guidance
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Get the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the stream. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Set the encoder to YouTube’s current recommendations. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds, testing and watching stream health. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Consult YouTube’s current supported-codec and setting details before selecting the encoder configuration; the right resolution, frame rate and bitrate depend on your source and delivery target. - Test the production setup, not a simplified substitute. Use the same loop, host, resolution, frame rate, audio, overlays and encoder settings you intend to run. Watch YouTube’s stream health and the encoder’s performance indicators. A short test can reveal problems under those conditions, but cannot prove long-term uptime.
- Decide how you will monitor and recover. Establish how you will learn that the encoder or connection stopped and who can restart it. A VPS is not automatically self-recovering, and a PC is not automatically available just because it is in your home.
- Keep a separate recording if a complete replay matters. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a single complete archive for an around-the-clock stream; retain your own recording if preserving the full run is important. YouTube’s archive guidance
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube shows no incoming stream: confirm live streaming is enabled, the encoder is using the correct stream URL and key, and the encoder is actually sending. If the key may have been exposed, replace it and update the encoder.
- Stream health deteriorates or the feed drops: check the host’s encoding load and the stability of its outbound connection. On a PC, investigate the home router and ISP upload path; on a VPS, verify the selected instance’s network and traffic terms. Re-test with the intended resolution, frame rate and loop.
- The video stutters or the encoder struggles: compare the actual workload with the machine’s available encoding capacity. Try a less demanding configuration only if it still meets your quality needs, then repeat the representative test. Basic OBS system requirements alone do not establish capacity.
- The stream stops while nobody is watching the host: check for local power or ISP interruptions on a PC, or instance, software and configuration issues on a VPS. Confirm that your monitoring and restart plan works; hosting location alone does not guarantee recovery.
- The archive is incomplete or missing: an around-the-clock broadcast exceeds YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive condition. Keep an independent recording when the entire broadcast must be preserved.
