Yes. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. If it identifies a movie trailer, it may show a placeholder and warn you to stop; if the material remains, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. A separate valid copyright removal request can remove the stream and give the channel a copyright strike. Repeating a trailer does not, by itself, give you permission or make the use fair use.
What YouTube can do while the stream is live
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it identifies copyrighted material, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn the streamer. If the material remains, the platform may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. Addressing the warning by stopping or removing the identified content may allow the stream to continue. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance describes these measures.
Detection is not guaranteed, and YouTube does not publish a probability for whether a particular trailer loop will be detected. A stream continuing without interruption is not proof that the use is authorized.
A live interruption, a Content ID claim, and a strike are different
- Live interruption: YouTube’s live scanning may lead to a warning, placeholder, interruption, or termination while the broadcast is in progress. That event should not automatically be described as a copyright strike.
- Content ID claim: If you archive the stream, YouTube says a Content ID claim on the archived livestream is made after the stream ends. A claim typically does not itself result in a strike. YouTube’s live-stream matching guidance explains live matching; its copyright-strike guidance distinguishes claims from strikes.
- Copyright removal request: A copyright owner or authorized representative can submit a removal request. If YouTube finds the request valid, it removes the content and applies a strike. This is separate from an automated match or warning. YouTube’s removal-request guidance describes the process.
Why looping a trailer does not settle fair use
Fair use is a case-specific legal analysis in the United States; courts decide it, not YouTube’s automated matching system. YouTube describes four factors: the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality used, and the effect on the work’s potential market. Transformative uses are more likely to qualify, but no single factor guarantees an outcome. YouTube’s fair-use guidance explains the factors and limits of automated decisions.

Simply replaying a trailer without adding commentary or other new expression does not, by itself, establish fair use. That is a practical inference from the factors, not a court ruling about every trailer loop. Copyright exceptions differ by country; outside the United States, rules such as fair dealing may apply only to specified purposes. Without knowing the country, trailer, rights, and context, it is not possible to determine whether a particular stream is protected or unlawful.
If you have permission to use the trailer
Check that the license covers livestreaming, the relevant territories and duration, and all elements in the trailer. Permission alone may not stop an automated interruption: YouTube says a licensed stream may still be interrupted if the channel is not on the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. Contact the rights holder to arrange allowlisting and confirm the channel is covered. YouTube’s live-stream guidance addresses licensed content and allowlisting.

YouTube’s Content ID eligibility rules say reference material must be content for which the claimant controls exclusive rights, and list trailers among material that may not be exclusive to one party. That rule concerns eligibility to submit reference material; it does not mean trailers are copyright-free or that anyone may stream them. See YouTube’s Content ID eligibility guidance.
What to do if YouTube warns you or stops the stream
- If a warning appears, stop or remove the identified trailer rather than continuing to broadcast it. YouTube says addressing the issue may let the stream continue.
- Check YouTube Studio and the notice, then identify whether the event was a live-stream interruption, an archived-video Content ID claim, or a copyright removal request. Their consequences differ.
- If you receive a scheduled removal request, read its deadline promptly. YouTube says the uploader has seven days to act before removal and a strike take effect. Options include deleting the content during that period or seeking a retraction. A counter notification is available after removal takes effect and the strike is applied.
- If a strike is applied, use a counter notification only if you have a good-faith basis to believe the removal was mistaken or your use qualifies for an exception. Review YouTube’s removal-request options and strike guidance.
What a strike can mean for your channel
If an active livestream is removed for copyright, YouTube says the channel receives a strike and loses live-streaming access for seven days. A further strike can extend the restriction to 14 days. A strike may expire after 90 days if Copyright School is completed; three active strikes within 90 days make a channel subject to termination. These are YouTube policy periods, not estimates of how likely a trailer loop is to be detected. See YouTube’s current strike guidance.
