Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor many YouTube livestreams, 1080p is a sensible starting point—but the best resolution is the highest one your encoder and upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube does not designate one resolution as best for every stream; it recommends choosing a reliable quality and testing before going live. The bitrate figures below are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality.
How to choose a YouTube streaming resolution
Start with what viewers need to see, then check whether your connection can carry the corresponding bitrate with headroom. For gameplay, fast motion may benefit from 60 fps if your encoder and connection can support it. For a mostly static presentation, 30 fps may be sufficient. Treat 1080p as a practical starting point, not a YouTube rule; move to 1440p or 4K when the extra detail matters and your setup remains stable at the higher bitrate.
YouTube recommends selecting quality that will produce a reliable stream on your available internet connection. It also recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. YouTube’s live encoder guidance explains the available settings.
Recommended live bitrate by resolution and frame rate
Use the recommendation for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. These are YouTube’s live-ingest settings; they are not the separate encoding recommendations for prerecorded uploads. YouTube’s page also lists minimum values, which are not reproduced here.

1080p vs. 1440p vs. 4K
1080p: a practical starting point
1080p offers a useful balance for many streams. Choose 30 or 60 fps based on the motion in your content and the bitrate your connection can reliably sustain. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60; for AV1/H.265, the corresponding recommendations are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps.

1440p: more detail, higher bandwidth demand
Choose 1440p when the additional detail is valuable—for example, when viewers need to read small interface elements—and your encoder and connection can maintain the target bitrate. H.264 recommendations rise to 21 Mbps at 30 fps and 34 Mbps at 60 fps; AV1/H.265 recommendations are 15 Mbps and 24 Mbps.
4K (2160p): use it when the detail justifies the cost
4K requires substantially more upload capacity: YouTube recommends 42 Mbps for H.264 at 2160p30 and 50 Mbps at 2160p60, or 30 Mbps and 35 Mbps respectively for AV1/H.265. YouTube says 2160p streams use normal latency; low-latency optimization is unavailable for 4K. If low viewer delay matters more than maximum detail, account for that trade-off when choosing resolution.

YouTube transcodes encoder livestreams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. The stream’s ingest resolution is therefore not the only playback format, but this does not guarantee a particular rendition for every stream or viewer. See YouTube’s encoder settings guide.
Check upload speed and leave headroom
The stream’s total bitrate must fit within your available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% headroom. Measure upload speed rather than download speed, and allow for other devices or applications using the same connection.

- Run an upload speed test on the connection and at the location you will use to stream.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate, and codec, then compare the recommended bitrate in the table with your available upload capacity. Leave the recommended 20% margin and account for competing network use.
- Set the encoder to the selected resolution and frame rate, and ensure its codec and bitrate match the plan.
- Test before the event using representative audio and video motion. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and the live broadcast.
YouTube’s guidance recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. A speed test alone cannot establish that a stream will remain stable under real conditions.

YouTube’s current live encoder guide lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. For SDR, the guide lists Rec. 709. Its HDR guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Check the current guide for the exact options supported by your encoder and stream setup.

YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. Manual selection is available with a custom stream key. Encoder workflows can also support screen or gameplay capture, external audio/video hardware, and more advanced productions; a hardware encoder is not necessary for every creator.
Troubleshoot resolution and stream stability
- Stream health warnings or interruptions: Check whether the total bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity, reduce competing network use, or select a lower bitrate target. Keep the 20% headroom recommended in YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Encoder and YouTube settings do not match: Verify that the encoder’s resolution and frame rate match the selected stream configuration, and that the codec and bitrate correspond to the intended row in YouTube’s live bitrate guidance.
- Higher resolution is not stable: Step down to a resolution or frame rate your connection can sustain, then test again. A stable 1080p stream is preferable to an unreliable attempt at a larger number.
- Viewers report playback difficulty: Remember that YouTube creates multiple output formats, but do not assume a specific playback rendition will be available to every viewer. Check stream health and test from representative devices and connections.
- 4K viewers need lower latency: YouTube sets 2160p streams to normal latency; its low-latency optimization is unavailable at that resolution. Consider whether a lower resolution better fits the event’s interaction needs.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video looping on a YouTube channel, rather than stream live gameplay or a camera, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based live production. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
