YouTube says the strike expires 90 days after the date it was applied if you complete Copyright School. Completing it does not restore the removed livestream, and a strike from an active livestream removed for copyright also brings a seven-day live-streaming restriction.
Complete Copyright School and check your strike status
- Open the strike notice. Use the Copyright School link or prompt in the copyright-strike notification, or look for it in YouTube Studio. YouTube does not document a single screen-by-screen interface that applies to every account, so follow the prompt shown for yours.
- Complete Copyright School. This is required for the strike-expiry route. The 90-day period runs from the date the strike was applied, not from the day you complete the school. If you already completed Copyright School, the period is still measured from the strike date.
- Check YouTube Studio. Review the strike status and whether live-streaming access is separately restricted. YouTube says that when an active live stream is removed for copyright, the channel receives a copyright strike and live-streaming access is restricted for seven days.
These periods are YouTube policy guidance, not a promise that a removed broadcast will be restored. The school-and-wait route expires the strike; YouTube says the removed video is not reinstated through this route.
First identify what happened to the livestream
A copyright strike is not the same as a Content ID claim. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. During a live broadcast, a match may replace the stream with a placeholder image and trigger a warning asking you to stop using the content. If you address the issue, the broadcast may continue; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate it. A livestream may also be terminated if it receives a copyright or Community Guidelines strike.
If you had permission to use the material, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Without that, a licensed stream can still be interrupted, including if the content is territory-restricted. If you archive the livestream, a Content ID claim may be made after the broadcast ends. An interruption or claim is not automatically the same thing as a copyright strike; check the notice and Studio status to see which action YouTube recorded.

Choose among the three ways to resolve a copyright strike

Do not submit a counter notification simply because you want the strike removed. YouTube warns that false information or misuse can lead to account or legal consequences. If the dispute is complex or disclosure of your personal information is a concern, legal advice may be relevant; a lawyer is not required to complete Copyright School.
Check whether the removal was scheduled
A scheduled copyright removal request may give you seven days to act before the content is removed and a strike is applied. During that window, deleting the content can avoid the strike. Once the removal and strike take effect, deleting the video does not resolve the strike. Check the notice for the deadline and available actions rather than relying on deletion after the fact.

What a strike means for a gaming livestream channel
- YouTube says three copyright strikes within 90 days can make a channel subject to termination. This is distinct from Content ID claims and from Community Guidelines strike rules.
- A seven-day live-streaming restriction can overlap with the longer strike-expiry period. Completing Copyright School does not by itself lift that separate restriction early.
- Before a future broadcast, verify that game footage, music, overlays, and any third-party broadcast material are allowed for your use. Permission may not prevent automated live interruption unless the relevant rights holder has allowlisted your channel.
