Set the YouTube stream to Private or Unlisted before you start OBS, then check YouTube’s incoming preview, stream health, and the video’s loop point. A Private stream limits access to you and invited viewers; an Unlisted stream can be watched by anyone with its link, so treat that link as shareable. Keep the test non-public until you are ready to broadcast.

Before you start: check YouTube Live access

Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. If you have never streamed live before, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility early rather than waiting until the test is due. YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup instructions describe these requirements.

Choose Private or Unlisted

In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and use the Stream tab to set up a stream now, or open Manage → Schedule Stream to prepare a scheduled stream. Set its visibility before connecting OBS.

Setting Who can watch Use it when
Private You and viewers you invite You want access limited to selected people.
Unlisted Anyone with the link You need to share the test easily and accept that the link can be forwarded.

Verify the setting rather than relying on the default: YouTube says streams for creators aged 13–17 default to Private, while streams for creators 18 or older default to Public. YouTube documents both Private and Unlisted as live-stream visibility options; Studio’s invitation details may change, so check the current controls when inviting viewers. See YouTube’s live-stream settings.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up the looping video in OBS

  1. Open the scene you intend to test. Use the scene and sources that will be part of the actual stream.
  2. Add a Media Source. In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source, name it, and browse to the local video file.
  3. Enable Loop. Turn on the Media Source’s Loop property so the file starts again when playback ends. OBS documents this behavior in its Media Sources guide.
  4. For a multi-file playlist, use VLC Video. OBS’s VLC Video source supports a playlist loop; VLC must be installed for that source type to appear. Add the files in the intended order and enable Loop Playlist.
  5. Check audio sources. Confirm the video’s audio is present at a sensible level and mute or remove any microphone or desktop-audio source that should not be part of the test. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers sources and audio setup.

Connect OBS to YouTube without exposing your stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the stream you selected.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if available, or select a custom streaming service and enter YouTube’s server URL and your stream key.
  3. Apply the settings and keep the key private. It functions like a password for sending a feed to your channel. Do not include it in screenshots or share it publicly. If you believe it was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
  4. Before starting, confirm that the correct YouTube stream is selected and still marked Private or Unlisted.

YouTube explains stream URLs and keys in Manage live stream settings.

Start the test and inspect what YouTube receives

  1. Start streaming in OBS. Confirm that OBS is sending data and that the Live Control Room receives the feed.
  2. Wait for YouTube’s preview, then inspect that preview—not only OBS’s local preview. The Control Room view checks the signal after it reaches YouTube.
  3. Play the video long enough to see representative motion and hear representative audio. Let it reach the end and verify that it restarts without an unwanted gap, flash, or audio jump.
  4. Listen for stray microphone or desktop audio, check levels, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages for connection or encoding warnings.
  5. If relevant, check the viewing experience on the channel or watch page and on a phone. Make sure the video and sound are accessible to the people who need to review them.

YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the intended event, monitoring the stream, and checking how it appears to viewers. A successful test confirms only the configuration, connection, and media behavior observed at that time; it cannot guarantee a later public stream will be flawless. See YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips and encoder instructions.

Check upload capacity and encoder settings

For a stable test, use the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream with and confirm that your connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. Run an upload-speed test and leave headroom: YouTube recommends upload capacity 20% above the combined bitrate of your streams. Avoid treating a brief speed-test result as a guarantee of sustained bandwidth.

  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder connections.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported encoder video codecs. Choose settings compatible with your encoder and destination.
  • Bitrate: Match it to your resolution, frame rate, codec, and sustained upload capacity. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance rather than assuming one bitrate suits every stream.

YouTube notes that lower-latency settings can increase playback buffering. For a non-interactive loop test, low latency is usually less important than a stable picture and sound. Bandwidth and latency guidance is in YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.

End the test and protect the recording

  1. End or stop the test in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then stop the encoder in OBS after the event has ended on YouTube.
  2. Check the next production stream’s visibility explicitly before going live; do not assume the test’s privacy setting carried over as intended.
  3. Review the test archive and its visibility if you want to keep or remove it. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so a private test may leave a recording in your channel content.

Troubleshooting a private OBS loop test

Symptom Likely cause What to do
No YouTube preview or no incoming signal Wrong stream selected, incorrect server URL or key, or live access is not enabled. Confirm the selected Live Control Room event, recheck the URL and key in OBS, and verify channel eligibility. Reset an exposed or suspect key.
The test is visible to the public The stream was left Public or the wrong event was selected. End the stream, set the intended event to Private or Unlisted, verify the selection, and only then restart. Do not use an Unlisted link where access must be restricted to invited viewers.
Video stops at the end Loop is disabled, or the playlist loop is not enabled. Enable Loop on the Media Source or Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source, then test through the end again.
Black screen or wrong video The source points to a missing file, the wrong scene is active, or the source is obscured. Confirm the file path, select the intended scene, and check source visibility and ordering in OBS.
Unexpected audio or silence Audio sources are misconfigured, muted, or mixing in desktop or microphone sound. Check OBS audio meters and source mute states, then listen to YouTube’s incoming preview during the loop transition.
Buffering, dropped frames, or poor stream health Insufficient sustained upload capacity or encoder settings unsuitable for the connection. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate as needed; confirm the upload connection can sustain the revised combined bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
VLC Video is unavailable in OBS VLC is not installed. Install VLC, reopen OBS, and add the VLC Video source again; use a single Media Source with Loop if you only need one file.
