If OBS’s VLC Video Source plays the first item in a playlist but never advances, check VLC’s installation and architecture, then test every playlist item directly in VLC. If the item is a YouTube Live URL, test that separately: a URL that VLC cannot open on its own is not an OBS playlist-sequencing problem. There is no verified universal fix for this symptom across current OBS and VLC versions, so identify which layer is failing before changing settings.
First identify what is in the playlist
The fix depends on whether the playlist contains local video files, a playlist file, or a YouTube URL. These are different failure points: OBS may be unable to load VLC’s libraries, a local media entry may fail, or VLC may not be able to open a remote YouTube stream.
- Local video files: Focus on VLC installation, architecture, file paths and whether each file plays in VLC.
- A YouTube Live URL: Test the exact URL in VLC before troubleshooting OBS playlist order. A YouTube watch page is not necessarily a media stream VLC can play as a playlist item.
- A playlist file: Check that the file’s entries point to media that exists and opens on the same machine.
When asking for help, include your operating system, OBS and VLC versions, the playlist type, and whether the problem affects local files or a remote URL. The available reports do not establish a current, general fix without those details.
Check VLC and each playlist item
- Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. OBS’s VLC Video Source documentation says the source uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed. It also notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If OBS cannot load the expected VLC installation, the source may not behave as intended.
- Open each exact item directly in VLC. On the same computer, test every local file or playlist entry—not just the first video. If an item fails there, resolve that file or path problem before treating it as an OBS sequencing issue.
- Review the VLC Video Source playlist in OBS. Confirm that each entry is present and points to the intended media. Check Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist if relevant: these control what happens after the list ends and the order of items, respectively. They do not make an unplayable YouTube URL playable.
- Test playback and progression separately. If all entries play in VLC but OBS stops after the first, note what happens at the transition and gather an OBS log for diagnosis. OBS’s VLC source implementation includes playlist, loop, shuffle and playback controls, but their presence does not identify the cause of a particular failure.
If the playlist item is a YouTube Live URL
First open the exact URL in VLC. A July 2023 OBS forum user reported that a YouTube URL failed both in VLC Video Source and when opened directly in VLC; the user later reported playback after updating a YouTube Lua script, but with buffering. That is one historical user report, not current official guidance or proof that the same change will work now. The useful diagnostic is the distinction: if VLC cannot open the URL on its own, OBS playlist ordering is not the only issue to investigate.

A January 2026 OBS forum participant described partial success using a live HLS index.m3u8 manifest URL instead of an ordinary YouTube watch URL. The participant was unsure whether that URL would remain stable. Treat this as an unverified, potentially temporary workaround—not a permanent or guaranteed fix. Do not assume a copied manifest will continue to work.
When to consider a different local-playlist tool
If your need is easier editing and control of local media playlists, the OBS Media Playlist Source plugin is an option to investigate. Check its current OBS version requirements before installing it. The cited resource does not establish that the plugin fixes playback of remote YouTube Live URLs.

What to include in a troubleshooting request
- Your operating system and exact OBS and VLC versions.
- Whether the playlist contains local files, a playlist file, or a YouTube URL.
- Whether the exact failing item opens directly in VLC on the same machine.
- What OBS does when the first item ends: stops, freezes on a frame, skips, or displays an error.
- An OBS log and, for a remote item, the URL type. Avoid posting private stream keys or other credentials.
A 2018 report described a playlist stopping on the final frame after its first item with OBS 21.0.1 and VLC 3.0.0. That old report illustrates a similar symptom, but it does not show that current versions have the same bug or cause.
