No—not if your home computer is the encoder sending the stream. A YouTube playlist or scheduled live event does not keep the broadcast transmitting after that encoder stops. To stay live with your computer off, another active encoder must send video to YouTube. For prerecorded videos, a cloud service such as StreamNeo can play uploaded videos continuously; a standalone hardware encoder is another option for supported setups.
What happens when the computer turns off?
Scheduling a YouTube live event creates a page viewers can visit and lets them set reminders; it does not provide the video feed. The encoder still has to send video and audio to YouTube. If your computer runs the software encoder and you shut it down, that encoder feed stops.
A YouTube playlist does not automatically start a new live broadcast when another broadcast ends. YouTube’s reviewed documentation does not establish automatic handoff between separate live streams in a playlist. A playlist and a live encoder solve different problems: the playlist organizes videos, while an active source and encoder transmit the broadcast.
When an encoder stream ends, YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Archiving the ended stream is not the same as continuing it live or starting another stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup and streaming guidance.

Ways to keep a YouTube stream running without the home computer
Use a cloud service for prerecorded videos
If your goal is to keep uploaded recordings playing as a YouTube live stream, a cloud service can host the playback and transmission instead of your home computer. Use a standalone hardware encoder
YouTube distinguishes software encoders on computers from standalone hardware encoders. Its encoder guide lists the AJA HELO Plus and describes its optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. That specific capability is not evidence that YouTube automatically chains separate live streams in a playlist. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility, configuration requirements, and availability before buying.
Keep another computer or streaming setup active
A second computer, or another active streaming setup, can take over the encoding and transmission role if it remains powered, connected, and configured to send a source to YouTube. This avoids relying on the home computer, but it does not eliminate the need for an active device and network connection somewhere. YouTube’s documented routes also include webcam and mobile streaming; those are alternatives when the intended source is live camera or mobile video rather than unattended playback of uploaded recordings. Set up the YouTube feed and schedule carefully
- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Do not leave this step until just before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
- Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio. Scheduling prepares the event page and reminder option; it does not start transmission by itself. YouTube’s live-stream settings documentation covers scheduling and encoder auto-start and auto-stop controls: Manage live stream settings.
- Connect the active encoder. In the encoder, use the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send a feed to your channel. For a cloud service, enter the key there rather than leaving your own computer running.
- Prepare early and test the source. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before the stream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Confirm that the correct event, source, and stream key are connected, then check the stream preview and status in YouTube Studio.
- Keep the sending device and network available. YouTube recommends a reliable connection, monitoring the stream, and leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection will remain stable. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop the encoder when the intended broadcast is over, and distinguish that action from ending or archiving the YouTube event. For a stream under 12 hours, YouTube says the ended stream is automatically archived.
Copyright and the content you loop
Before running a recording repeatedly, confirm that you have the necessary rights to its video, music, and other included material for live streaming on YouTube. A playlist or cloud encoder does not grant those rights. YouTube’s rules and enforcement can affect whether a stream remains available; review the current copyright safety checklist before using content you did not create or license.
