To rotate prerecorded videos in a YouTube livestream, add them to an OBS Studio VLC Video source and turn on Loop Playlist. Install VLC first. This automates which clip plays next; it does not keep the broadcast online if your computer, OBS, power, or internet connection fails.
Set up an automatically rotating playlist in OBS
- Enable YouTube live streaming. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and complete the channel’s live-stream activation if prompted. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before you plan to go live. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match architectures: a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC is missing or mismatched, the VLC source may not be available in OBS.
- Add a VLC Video source. In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source, then add the local video files you want to rotate to its playlist. Arrange the files in the order you want them to play.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist so OBS starts the list again after its last file. OBS documents this setting as on by default. Choose shuffle if you want a different order on each pass. The VLC source also exposes visibility behavior, network caching, and audio-track settings; adjust those only if your playback setup needs them. For one video rather than a playlist, use OBS’s built-in Media Source and enable its Loop option. OBS explains these controls in its Media Sources guide.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube if it is offered; otherwise enter the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube Studio. Treat the stream key as a password: do not share or publish it.
- Start and check the encoder. Start streaming from OBS, then verify the live output in YouTube Studio and confirm that the video and audio are playing as intended. A playlist looping correctly confirms playback behavior, not uninterrupted service.
What playlist rotation does—and does not—guarantee
OBS can select the next file and restart a playlist after its last file. That does not restart OBS or restore a live connection after a computer crash, power loss, application failure, or network outage. The official OBS and YouTube setup documentation describes media looping and encoder connection, but does not promise automatic recovery from those failures. If the stream must run unattended, plan who or what will detect and recover from an interruption.
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise an archive for a longer continuous broadcast, so do not rely on a 24/7 stream being saved as a single video.
Keep the video rights and live-stream setup in order
Only put videos and audio in the playlist when you have the rights or permissions needed to stream them. A successful OBS loop is not permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material. Check YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements for your channel and content before starting; the encoder setup page linked above covers connection steps, not a blanket approval of playlist content.

When HLS requirements matter
These transport details apply only if your encoder workflow uses YouTube’s HLS ingestion. They are not settings to copy into every OBS-to-YouTube setup. YouTube specifies MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube also says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements and Google’s HLS ingestion guide.
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops after the final file: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source. For a single clip, check Loop in the Media Source properties instead.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm that the stream is created or selected in YouTube Studio and that OBS has the matching server URL and stream key. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The broadcast ends when the computer or connection fails: Playlist looping cannot recover the encoder or network. Restore the machine, OBS, or connection and reconnect the encoder, or use a cloud service designed to keep the stream running.
- A long broadcast is not archived: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition covers streams under 12 hours; it is not a guarantee for a longer continuous broadcast.
