OBS is usually the better starting point if you want a graphical setup, visible controls, and scene composition; FFmpeg is worth considering when you want a command-line workflow that can be scripted. For either option, the encoder is only one part of a 24/7 stream: you still need to configure YouTube Live, meet its ingest settings, monitor the feed, and plan for interruptions. OBS documents a built-in media loop. The exact FFmpeg loop command and unattended reliability are not established here, so test your chosen setup rather than assuming either program will run without supervision.

In short: choose OBS for an accessible, visual workflow; consider FFmpeg if command-line automation is central to your setup. Neither choice removes YouTube configuration requirements or the need to plan for failures.
Set up a prerecorded loop with OBS
- Create a scene and add the video. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the prerecorded file.
- Enable the loop. Open the Media Source properties and select Loop. OBS documents that this restarts the media source after it reaches the end. Check the source in the preview to confirm playback and audio behave as intended.
- Configure the stream output. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Do not assume one bitrate fits every output. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS for the listed encoder workflow, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, and lists frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, says not to exceed four seconds, and lists CBR bitrate encoding. See the current YouTube live encoder settings and use its bitrate table for your specific output.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or configure a stream and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as a secret: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS, wait for YouTube to receive the feed and show a preview, then use the Live Control Room’s Go live action when the workflow requires it. YouTube’s stream setup guide describes this sequence.
- Test the actual content. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement representative of the broadcast, monitoring stream health, and reviewing any messages in Live Control Room. Make corrections before treating the setup as ready for a long run.
Using FFmpeg for a loop
FFmpeg is a command-line-oriented alternative that may suit a fixed output or a deployment managed with scripts. This article does not provide a verified loop command: the exact current FFmpeg flags were not confirmed, and an untested command can fail or behave differently than expected. Before using FFmpeg for a long broadcast, consult its current documentation for the loop behavior you need and test the complete pipeline with your file, audio, chosen output settings, and YouTube ingest.
The YouTube-side procedure is the same as for OBS: configure a stream in Live Control Room, enter the server URL and stream key in your encoder, start sending, inspect the preview and stream health, and complete the Go live step where required. Follow YouTube’s current codec, frame-rate, keyframe, audio, and bitrate guidance rather than assuming the tool’s defaults meet it.

What a 24/7 stream needs beyond looping
A loop only describes what happens when media playback reaches its end. It does not guarantee that the encoder process, computer, or network will remain available, or that a dropped connection will recover. For a do-it-yourself setup, decide how you will detect a stopped stream, restart the encoder if needed, check the connection, and respond to YouTube warnings. Neither the cited OBS nor YouTube documentation certifies OBS or FFmpeg as failure-proof for unattended operation.
Plan for a complete archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete recording matters, make a local recording backup or use deliberate shorter broadcast segments. Check rights and monetization before looping
You are responsible for having the rights needed to use the content in a live stream, including applicable music rights. A video being available online does not establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s Terms of Service address the rights needed for live content.
YouTube’s monetization policy applies to livestreams. It expects original, authentic content and says repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible; looping a file does not by itself determine whether a channel or stream qualifies.
