You can run a nonstop YouTube playlist stream from an AWS Lightsail virtual private server (VPS) by installing an encoder, configuring it to loop compatible media, and sending the output to YouTube Live. The VPS keeps the encoding process off your home computer, but a single Lightsail instance is not an uptime guarantee: the stream still depends on the instance, network, encoder, media and YouTube ingestion.
Before you start: check the channel and playlist
Confirm YouTube Live access
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its current guidance also sets the minimum age for live streaming at 16. Check the channel’s eligibility before provisioning a server: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Clear rights to every item
Make sure you have the necessary rights to all video and audio in the playlist, including music. YouTube makes the creator responsible for those rights. Third-party content matching can replace the live picture, interrupt the broadcast or terminate it; even licensed material may require the rights holder to add your channel to an allowlist. Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube says repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible for monetization, and its reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement. Having permission—or having no copyright claim—is not proof that a stream meets monetization requirements. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Choose a Lightsail instance for the actual workload
Lightsail plans bundle vCPU, memory, SSD storage and a data-transfer allowance. On the AWS pricing page accessed October 3, 2026, the listed Linux/Unix public IPv4 entry plan starts at $5/month and includes 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB of transfer. Plans and allowances can change; confirm current details at AWS Lightsail pricing.
That entry plan is not a universally established minimum for nonstop streaming. A process that copies compatible encoded media has a different CPU profile from one that decodes and re-encodes video. Output resolution, frame rate, codec, audio processing and software overhead also matter. Choose a plan based on the method and settings you actually use, test it under representative load, and monitor CPU, memory, disk and transfer usage before leaving it unattended.
Configure YouTube Live and the encoder
Create a stream and protect its key

Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.

Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the encoder setup. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password and address: do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots or logs. Reset it if it is compromised. See YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Configure the encoder on the Lightsail server to use YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion endpoint where supported. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure ingestion protocol. HLS is a separate option with different setup requirements and higher latency; use it only when the chosen encoder or codec workflow calls for it.
Use compatible output settings
YouTube’s current encoder guide lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 frames per second, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current table for your exact combination rather than treating one bitrate as universal: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These figures are recommendations for those specific settings, not requirements for every stream. Match the encoder output to the source and the connection available to the VPS. Test a representative segment—including its audio and motion—and check stream health in YouTube Studio before relying on the setup.
Run the playlist as a supervised loop
Configure the encoder or playback pipeline to repeat the playlist, then run it as a service or under a process supervisor so it can restart if it exits. Add monitoring or alerts for a stopped process, failed connection and low disk space. These are operational design choices, not features automatically supplied by Lightsail; a supervisor can restart a process, but cannot fix a failed instance, bad media, network outage or YouTube restriction.
Keep the playlist files and configuration in a location the process can read after a reboot. Restrict access to files containing the stream key, and avoid printing that key in logs. After a reboot test, confirm that the encoder reconnects and that the correct playlist resumes. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; an unattended VPS still needs someone to respond to alerts and investigate failures.

Plan a separate archive for long broadcasts
YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours. It warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on very long streams. If preserving the broadcast matters, do not rely on YouTube as the only copy. Keep a separate recording and check that the recording file is growing and remains playable. An external SSD is optional storage for that backup workflow, not a component required to send a stream from Lightsail. Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the encoder is running, the stream URL and key are correct, and the key has not been reset. Confirm RTMPS settings and inspect the encoder’s connection error without exposing the key.

The stream starts but drops or stutters: Check YouTube Studio’s stream health, the instance’s CPU and memory use, and the encoder’s output bitrate. Verify that the selected codec, frame rate and keyframe interval match YouTube’s guidance and that the VPS can sustain the workload.

The process stops after a reboot or error: Check that the loop starts automatically, its media path is available, and its service or supervisor reports a healthy process. Add alerts rather than assuming a restart succeeded.

The stream is interrupted or its picture is replaced: Review YouTube notifications and the playlist’s third-party audio and video rights. A license may not prevent a live match if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel.

No archive appears: Check stream duration. A stream beyond 12 hours may not be captured; use and verify a separate recording when retention is important.
