To protect a YouTube Live archive, plan to end an encoder-based stream before it reaches 12 hours, keep a separate local recording, and verify the resulting archive in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all—so a single 24/7 broadcast is not a dependable way to preserve the entire run as one YouTube archive.
Why a 24/7 stream can be a problem for the archive
YouTube’s current archive guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is a caveat, not a guarantee: a shorter stream is not assured to archive, and YouTube does not say that every longer stream will fail. If retaining a YouTube archive matters, plan a deliberate stop before the 12-hour boundary rather than treating one continuous 24/7 event as reliably archivable. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
Before ending the broadcast
Confirm your local backup is recording
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. If you are recording locally, verify that the recording is active, that the file is intact, and that its size is growing before relying on it. A separate local file and YouTube’s post-stream archive are two different copies; the local recording does not guarantee that YouTube captures the stream. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.
Know what DVR does—and does not do
DVR controls whether viewers can pause, rewind, and resume while the broadcast is live. YouTube notes that DVR can be limited or unavailable for very long streams. Turning DVR off affects live seeking; it is not an archive-preservation setting. YouTube says viewers can still watch a recording of the entire stream once it is available. - 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
End an encoder-based stream and check its archive
- Use the controls shown in Live Control Room. For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s instructions include clicking End Stream and stopping output from the encoder. Follow the controls presented for your event; YouTube’s general encoder guidance says to end the stream by stopping content from the encoder. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Confirm the event has stopped on YouTube. YouTube’s streaming tips advise stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. Check the platform-side status before cutting the encoder output.
- Stop sending content from the encoder. Once the event has ended on YouTube, stop the encoder’s transmission. If you are also making a local recording, verify that the recording has been finalized and saved.
- Find the stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio and select Content, then the Live tab. YouTube’s encoder instructions identify the Live tab as the place to find previous, current, and upcoming streams.
- Verify the archive and its visibility. Confirm that the expected recording is present and that its visibility is what you intend. YouTube documents changing an archive’s visibility and deleting it in Studio; do not assume a visibility setting proves the recording was captured. Check that the archive exists before changing settings or deleting anything. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
What to preserve: YouTube archive and local copy
| Copy | Where it is stored | What to check | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube archive | YouTube Studio, under Content > Live | Confirm the recording is present and check its visibility. | YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. |
| Local recording | Your recording destination | Confirm recording is active, the file is intact, and its size is growing; check the saved file after stopping. | It must be configured and monitored separately; YouTube recommends it as a backup. |
An external hard drive or portable SSD can provide storage for a local recording, but the drive itself does not configure recording or ensure YouTube captures the event.
