How to Loop Landscape and Portrait Videos in One YouTube Live Stream

YouTube’s playlist Loop repeats normal playback, not a live broadcast. Here’s how to approach a repeating landscape-and-portrait live feed and configure YouTube’s horizontal and vertical layouts.

YouTube’s playlist Loop control repeats ordinary playlist playback; it does not create or repeat a live broadcast. To broadcast a repeating sequence of landscape and portrait clips, send a feed through a live encoder or production workflow, then configure YouTube’s horizontal and vertical Live layouts. YouTube documents those layout options, but its help pages do not establish automatic rotation of separately uploaded files from one playlist.

First, identify which kind of loop you mean

Repeating a regular YouTube playlist

For ordinary playlist playback, start the playlist and select Loop in the playlist controls. That repeats playback for viewers; it is not a YouTube Live broadcast. YouTube’s playlist help describes the playback control.

Broadcasting prerecorded clips as a live feed

A live stream is a separate workflow. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that sends a feed to YouTube Live. As YouTube puts it, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” Turning on Loop on a watch page does not send a live feed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

If you want a continuous live presentation made from prerecorded clips, you need an encoder or production workflow that plays and sends those clips as a live feed. YouTube’s help pages do not specify how to create a repeating sequence of separately uploaded landscape and portrait files in third-party software. Check the current documentation for the encoder you choose and confirm that it supports the exact sequencing and orientation behavior you need.

Check channel eligibility and activation time

  • Your channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • If you are enabling live streaming for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube describes mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming methods. An encoder is an option for a more advanced production, not a requirement to buy dedicated hardware.

See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility information before scheduling the broadcast.

Choose the horizontal and vertical live layouts

YouTube says Live Control Room streams go live in both horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats by default. The vertical output starts as a center crop, and YouTube documents three vertical layout choices:

  • Stacked: arranges content in a stacked vertical layout.

These are controls for the live layout, not a documented way to alternate automatically between separate landscape and portrait uploads. YouTube’s help names the options but does not establish their precise visual behavior for every source or layout. Review the preview in Live Control Room and check the current interface before going live. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance for horizontal and vertical formats.

Configure and test the encoder workflow

Prepare the source sequence

  1. Choose encoder software or a hardware encoder that can send a feed to YouTube Live. YouTube does not require a particular brand or a dedicated hardware device for this workflow.
  2. Build the clip sequence in that encoder or its associated production software. Confirm in its current documentation that it can play the landscape and portrait files in the intended order and repeat the sequence. YouTube’s official help does not confirm this feature for third-party products.
  3. Check how each source appears in both live layouts. A landscape clip may be cropped in the vertical output; a portrait clip may not fill the horizontal frame as intended. Preview actual clips rather than assuming one layout will suit both.

Use compatible stream settings

YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported video codec choices for encoder streams. Its encoder settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Match stream quality to your available upload bandwidth, leave bandwidth headroom, and test the intended settings before the public broadcast. YouTube’s help does not provide a single bitrate that fits every resolution and connection, so use its current recommended encoder settings for the quality you select.

Start with a test and monitor the live session

  1. Run a test stream before the scheduled broadcast. Use representative movement and audio; a static or silent test may not reveal problems that appear in the real program.
  2. Check the horizontal and vertical previews for crop, framing, and orientation issues.
  3. During the stream, watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages, and monitor the encoder for dropped frames or connection warnings.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages. See its encoder setup and troubleshooting guidance.

Common problems and fixes

“Loop” repeats the playlist, but there is no live broadcast

The vertical version cuts off important content

The default vertical format is a center crop. Review the vertical preview and choose among center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked where available. Recheck each source clip because landscape and portrait material may need different framing.

Live streaming is unavailable on the channel

Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.

The stream is unstable or the quality falls short

Test at the intended quality, compare it with available upload bandwidth, and leave headroom instead of using the full connection capacity. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s status. Consult YouTube’s current recommended encoder settings rather than guessing a bitrate.

The clips do not rotate or repeat as expected

That behavior depends on the encoder or production software. Verify its current instructions for playlist sequencing, looping, and mixed orientations; YouTube’s help pages do not establish a specific third-party configuration.

Keep the source material eligible for YouTube

Using prerecorded clips in a live presentation does not remove the need to have the rights to the video and audio. Review YouTube’s current Community Guidelines and copyright guidance for the material you plan to stream. A stream setup guide cannot determine whether a particular clip is authorized or whether a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
