Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a custom website, put a muted, looping <video> inside the homepage hero and position it behind the headline with CSS. In WordPress, start with a Video block and use its playback settings, then add styling through your theme or page builder. In either case, keep the headline and call to action as ordinary page text, include a poster image, and check the result on mobile and with autoplay disabled.
Choose a method
| Route | Best when | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| HTML and CSS | You can edit the site’s markup and styles or use a custom theme. | Video sources, playback attributes, layering, sizing, and crop. |
| WordPress Video block | The homepage is built in the block editor and its theme or page builder supports the layout you need. | Common playback settings in the editor, with custom classes or CSS for background styling. |
Add a video background with HTML and CSS
1. Place the video inside the hero
Add a video element within the hero section, before its text and calls to action. This example supplies WebM and MP4 sources plus a poster image:
<section class="hero">
<video class="hero__video" autoplay muted loop playsinline poster="/media/hero-poster.jpg" aria-hidden="true">
<source src="/media/hero-video.webm" type="video/webm">
<source src="/media/hero-video.mp4" type="video/mp4">
</video>
<div class="hero__content">
<h1>Your headline</h1>
<p>Keep the message and action in regular page text.</p>
</div>
</section>
Use your actual file paths. Multiple <source> elements let the browser select among the formats you provide. The example marks the video as decorative; do not do that if it conveys information your visitors need.
2. Layer and crop it with CSS
.hero {
position: relative;
min-height: 60vh;
overflow: hidden;
isolation: isolate;
}
.hero__video {
position: absolute;
inset: 0;
width: 100%;
height: 100%;
object-fit: cover;
z-index: -1;
}
.hero__content {
position: relative;
z-index: 1;
}
The video fills the hero and object-fit: cover crops it as needed to fill the available space. The sample’s 60vh is a starting point, not a requirement: set the hero height and crop to suit your page and footage. Check that the focal point remains visible at narrow screen widths and that text remains legible; an overlay or a different crop may be needed.

3. Understand the playback attributes
autoplayrequests automatic playback. Browsers and user settings can prevent it, so do not treat it as guaranteed.mutedstarts the video without sound; muted playback is more likely to qualify for autoplay than audible playback.looprequests that playback repeat.playsinlinerequests playback within the element’s area rather than taking over the screen on supported devices.postersupplies an image to show while video data is unavailable or playback has not begun.
Keep the poster meaningful: the hero should still look intentional if the clip does not play. The HTML video reference explains these attributes and notes that autoplay takes precedence over preload hints: MDN: The video element.
Add a background in WordPress
1. Insert and configure a Video block
- Open the homepage in the block editor and insert a Video block where the hero video should appear.
- Choose Upload, Media Library, or Insert from URL to select the video.
- In the block settings, review autoplay, loop, muted, inline playback, controls, preload, and poster image. The exact presentation can depend on your WordPress version, theme, and editor configuration.
- For a background treatment, add an additional CSS class to the block and style it in your theme or site CSS. Check whether your theme or page builder already provides a video-background control before adding custom code.
WordPress documents the Video block and its settings here: Video block. A block can be convenient, but uploading a large video may slow a page. Also, do not assume a low preload setting prevents an autoplay video from downloading: autoplay takes precedence over preload hints.

Keep the video from hurting the page
Choose a lightweight clip and fallback
- Use a short, compressed clip rather than a long, high-bitrate source intended for full-length viewing.
- If the video is always muted, remove an unused audio track so it does not add unnecessary data.
- Keep a static poster or other image fallback for slow connections, blocked autoplay, and contexts where video is disabled.
- Avoid loading several large background videos on one page.
Decide when the file should load
Autoplay can begin downloading video data early, including when a video is outside the initial viewport. For a homepage hero visible immediately, an early download may help the clip start quickly but can compete with page content for loading resources and affect Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). Weigh those trade-offs against your site’s actual layout and performance. For video farther down the page, web.dev describes using a poster and Intersection Observer to defer downloading until the video approaches the viewport: web.dev: Lazy-loading video. Test the real page; a preload hint alone is not a reliable way to defer an autoplay video.
Make the background accessible
A decorative background should not carry the only copy of an offer, instruction, or other important information. Keep essential content as selectable, readable page text. A decorative video can be hidden from assistive technologies with aria-hidden="true", as in the example, but only when it truly adds no information.

If the video communicates meaning, provide that information in accessible text and offer a way to control playback. A continuously looping video runs indefinitely; users who need to pause or stop it should not be left without a control. If there is speech or other meaningful audio, do not rely on a muted background alone—provide appropriate controls and captions. See web.dev: Video and source elements for accessibility considerations. Its guidance is: “Autoplay should only be used when necessary, and as the result of an anticipated need for the user.”
Check the finished hero
- Confirm the headline and call to action remain visible over every part of the loop.
- Test desktop and mobile dimensions, including whether the crop hides the focal point.
- Test with autoplay blocked or disabled and confirm the poster still works.
- Check loading behavior on a slower connection and make sure the rest of the homepage remains usable.
- Verify that meaningful video content is also available as text and that users can control playback when needed.
