Configure YouTube and the encoder
Get the YouTube stream details
- In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup and create or schedule a stream. Follow the on-screen prompts to obtain the server URL and stream key.
- Keep the stream key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Enter it only in the encoder’s stream settings.
- Choose the encoder’s custom streaming destination and enter the server URL and stream key as prompted. Use RTMPS when the encoder and YouTube provide it, since YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingest.
Use a conservative encoder starting point
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube also supports H.265 and AV1, but H.264 is a straightforward starting choice for a desktop setup. YouTube transcodes incoming broadcasts for viewers, so you do not need to create separate outgoing encodes for every viewer format. Figures are from YouTube Help’s H.264 recommendations, accessed in 2026. The listed 14 Mbps upper value for 1080p30 is not a minimum or a recommended target. Match resolution and bitrate to a sustained upload test rather than selecting a setting from download speed alone.
Test at the desktop’s actual location
- Run an upload test from the computer and location you will stream from, preferably at a time when your household normally uses the connection.
- In the encoder, begin at a lower resolution and bitrate that leaves capacity for audio, transport overhead, household traffic, and fluctuations. No fixed headroom multiplier is established here.
- Send a test with representative audio and movement—such as the gameplay, menu motion, or other content you intend to loop. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch the encoder’s statistics for dropped frames and connection instability, and check YouTube’s stream-health indicator before relying on the broadcast.
- Increase resolution or bitrate only after a realistic test remains stable. If upload varies or dropped frames appear, reduce the bitrate or resolution and test again.
Confirm your BSNL plan can sustain the stream
Check the current terms for your own BSNL plan and service area rather than relying on a general speed label. Confirm the sustained upload rate, any fair-use threshold, and the speed or restrictions that apply after reaching it. Also test whether the connection remains stable at the desktop’s location.

Estimate data use without mistaking it for a BSNL allowance
For a constant video bitrate, video payload is bitrate multiplied by elapsed time. For example, a hypothetical 5 Mbps video payload running continuously for 30 days is about 1,620,000 megabits, or 202,500 megabytes using decimal units (about 202.5 GB). This arithmetic estimate excludes audio and transport overhead, so actual network traffic is higher; it is not a measurement of BSNL usage or a statement about your plan’s allowance.

Keep the desktop and local network running
- Place the desktop where it has adequate airflow, and check that fans and cooling remain unobstructed.
- Disable sleep and hibernation for the streaming session so the computer does not suspend the encoder.
- Use wired Ethernet where available to avoid an unnecessary Wi-Fi link in the streaming path.
- Schedule operating-system updates and restarts so they do not interrupt a planned broadcast; install security updates at a time when an interruption is acceptable.
- Consult the current documentation for your encoder before changing automatic reconnect or recovery settings.
- A UPS can keep the desktop and nearby network equipment powered through a brief local power interruption. It cannot prevent a BSNL outage or guarantee that a broadcast remains connected.

Start the continuous broadcast and monitor it
- Start the encoder’s test or preview and confirm that YouTube receives a healthy signal.
- Verify that the video and audio are present and that the stream is using the intended resolution and bitrate.
- Start the live broadcast from the encoder or YouTube Studio as required by your setup, then keep YouTube’s stream-health status and encoder statistics visible.
- Check the stream periodically, especially after a router restart, power interruption, encoder update, or change in household network use.
A 24/7 stream also needs content you have the right to broadcast. Music, gameplay footage, and other material may be subject to copyright claims or YouTube policies. A stream running continuously does not itself establish permission to use the content or eligibility for monetization. Review YouTube’s current rules and the rights for every video and audio track before leaving it live.
