For a mostly static loop, 720p30 is a sensible starting point; use 60 fps when the video has meaningful fast motion. Test the actual stream and leave upload bandwidth headroom before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Recommended OBS settings for a 720p YouTube Live loop
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations give the following H.264 bitrate range for both 720p30 and 720p60. These are recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection or stream will be stable.

These values follow YouTube’s live encoder settings. YouTube also lists 2–6 Mbps for 720p30 and 720p60 when using AV1 or H.265; codec availability depends on the encoder and setup. Use H.264 as the straightforward baseline if you are unsure which codec to select.
Choose 720p30 or 720p60 for the loop
Use 720p30 for a mostly static image
For a game scene, music visualizer, or other loop with little movement, 30 fps is a reasonable starting configuration. It reduces the data the encoder needs to send compared with a higher-frame-rate stream at the same per-frame complexity, but the right bitrate still depends on the content and connection.

Use 720p60 when motion benefits from it
Choose 60 fps when the video contains fast gameplay or other motion that looks noticeably smoother at that frame rate. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate range remains 3–8 Mbps at 720p60, just as it does at 720p30; this does not mean every loop needs 60 fps or that a higher bitrate will fix an unstable connection.
Set the bitrate against your real upload capacity
A bitrate inside YouTube’s recommended range only works if your outbound connection can sustain it. YouTube recommends testing outbound bandwidth and leaving about 20% headroom; its Streaming tips page says, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” If other people or devices share the connection, the capacity available to OBS may be lower than the plan’s advertised upload speed.

- Run a speed test and use the measured upload capacity as a planning input, not the internet plan’s headline speed.
- Leave roughly 20% of tested upload bandwidth unused rather than setting OBS to consume the full measured capacity.
- Test at the bitrate you intend to use, because a speed test alone does not prove a long stream will remain stable.
If your tested upload cannot sustain the selected bitrate with headroom, lower the bitrate within the recommended range or reduce the stream demands. Do not assume that choosing the maximum recommended bitrate will improve quality on a constrained connection.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming early. YouTube says first-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. Complete this before the planned broadcast using YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Prepare the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, create or select the live stream, and use its stream settings to obtain the stream key. YouTube’s stream management guidance covers creating and reusing settings, stream keys, latency, and DVR options.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send video to your live stream. Do not publish it or include it in a screenshot or recording.
- Configure OBS for YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service, and connect your account or enter the stream key according to the connection option you choose. Use RTMPS where available.
- Set the video and output values. In OBS, set the canvas/output resolution to 1280 × 720 and the frame rate to 30 or 60 based on the loop’s motion. In Settings > Output, configure H.264, CBR, the chosen bitrate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Ensure the video is progressive and audio uses AAC or MP3.
- Load and check the loop source. Add the recorded video as a media source and configure it to loop if it is intended to repeat. Confirm the source is visible and that audio is neither missing nor unexpectedly loud.
- Test before the scheduled stream. Start a test stream with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages in the Live Control Room; YouTube explicitly recommends testing before the live event.
- Start the broadcast deliberately. Once OBS is sending a stable feed and YouTube reports healthy ingest, verify the preview and stream details in YouTube Studio, then start or confirm the public broadcast there as required by the stream setup.
Latency, DVR, and loop-specific checks
Choose latency in YouTube’s stream settings based on whether live audience interaction matters. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; it matters less when you are not interacting with viewers in real time. Consider the DVR option as part of the stream’s management settings if viewers should be able to scrub back during the broadcast.

Encoder settings do not determine whether a particular channel is eligible to livestream in India or whether a particular continuous-loop format complies with YouTube’s current policies. Check your channel’s current live-streaming eligibility and YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content policies before broadcasting. Having permission to stream a recording does not itself establish that a channel meets every monetization requirement.
Troubleshoot common 720p loop-stream problems
