To send a video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then give FFmpeg a real-time input and an FLV output. For a prerecorded MP4, the basic pattern is ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'YOUR_RTMPS_URL_AND_KEY'. That sends one file as a live feed; looping it, recovering from interruptions, and keeping the YouTube event playable require separate checks.

Get the YouTube stream URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room. Prepare a stream or select an existing one.

  2. In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key exactly as shown. YouTube describes the key as the password and address that tell your encoder where to send the feed. A custom stream key can be reused. YouTube: Manage live stream settings.

  3. Choose the RTMPS URL shown in the Live Control Room if your FFmpeg build supports it. RTMPS encrypts the ingest connection; do not guess or construct the destination URL yourself. If you encounter a TLS error, confirm that the destination is the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube and check YouTube’s port guidance. YouTube: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

  4. Keep the key private. Avoid putting it in screenshots, public scripts, repositories, or posts. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update the FFmpeg command or configuration that uses it.

In the command below, replace the destination placeholder with the exact RTMPS destination and key arrangement supplied by YouTube. Never publish a real key.

Send an MP4 to YouTube Live with FFmpeg

For a local MP4, this is a practical starting command:

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'YOUR_RTMPS_URL_AND_KEY'
  • -re reads a file at approximately its intended playback rate instead of sending it as fast as FFmpeg can process it.
  • -i input.mp4 identifies the input file. Replace input.mp4 with its path.
  • -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac select H.264 video and AAC audio encoding in this example.
  • -f flv selects the output container commonly used for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
  • The final quoted argument is the destination YouTube provides. Keep the stream URL and key private.

FFmpeg’s documented file-to-RTMP pattern uses real-time input and FLV output. This example re-encodes video and audio; whether those encoders are available depends on the FFmpeg build. FFmpeg options apply in command order to the relevant next input or output, so keep input options before the input they affect and output options with the destination. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Check the FFmpeg build before relying on it

Run ffmpeg -version to identify the installed build and ffmpeg -encoders to inspect its encoders. Builds differ: confirm that yours includes the input support, H.264 and AAC encoders you intend to use, FLV muxing, and RTMPS support. If a named encoder is unavailable, use a compatible encoder included in your build and verify the resulting stream in YouTube Studio.

Test privately before going public

  1. Start with a short test and a representative section of the actual video, including its loudest audio and most demanding motion.

  2. Wait for the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Review the stream health and any warnings before making the event public or depending on it.

  3. Check playback from a viewer endpoint as well as the FFmpeg process. A running process does not prove YouTube is receiving valid audio and video.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. When the test is finished, stop the FFmpeg process and end the stream deliberately in the Live Control Room.

Choose YouTube-compatible video and audio settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance accessed on October 3, 2026 lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; and recommended two-second keyframes, with four seconds as the maximum. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current YouTube encoder settings table for the exact combination you plan to send.

For H.264, YouTube’s current table gives these examples:

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published H.264 figures, not a guarantee that a particular connection or input will sustain that output. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your upload connection can maintain; test with representative motion and audio, and monitor stream health. When setting the encoder, use CBR and keyframes at two-second intervals where supported, and do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second maximum.

Looping a file is a separate problem from using a stream key

The basic command sends one input in real time; it does not make that file loop forever. FFmpeg has options such as -stream_loop -1 for looping inputs, but behavior depends on the FFmpeg version and the media. Validate the actual file and build rather than assuming the transition will be seamless.

Test the file’s end-to-start boundary for gaps, repeated or missing frames, timestamp problems, and audio/video sync. A single file loop is not the same as a playlist of different videos: playlist transitions and timing need their own validation. The official FFmpeg documentation establishes file-to-RTMP transmission and a FIFO-based recovery example; it does not establish seamless infinite looping or arbitrary playlist behavior.

What “continuous” means—and what can interrupt it

A reliable live feed depends on several distinct things working: the FFmpeg process stays running, the source keeps producing packets, the network publishes them successfully, and YouTube’s event remains live and playable. A process that has not exited can still be sending invalid media or failing to reach YouTube.

FFmpeg documents a FIFO-based RTMP example that can attempt recovery after temporary network failures. Recovery is not a promise that an outage will be invisible to viewers or that the YouTube event will stay valid indefinitely. A process supervisor and monitoring can help keep a self-managed setup running, but their configuration depends on the operating system and deployment. For a stream you intend to leave unattended, monitor both FFmpeg and YouTube’s stream health.

Latency is a trade-off

YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. For a prerecorded ambience or radio-style feed with little live interaction, prioritizing stable playback over the lowest delay may be a sensible choice; that is a practical inference, not a guarantee from YouTube. Troubleshoot common FFmpeg-to-YouTube problems

  • YouTube does not show a preview: Confirm the event is prepared in the Live Control Room, that the copied destination and key are correct, and that FFmpeg is still producing output. Review YouTube’s stream health messages rather than relying only on terminal output.

  • Authentication or ingest failure: Check for a mistyped, reset, or exposed key and make sure it belongs to the selected stream. Copy the stream URL from YouTube instead of assembling one from memory.

  • TLS or connection errors: Verify that you copied YouTube’s RTMPS URL, not a regular RTMP URL, and check YouTube’s port guidance. Also confirm that the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.

  • “Unknown encoder” or missing format errors: Inspect ffmpeg -encoders and the installed build information with ffmpeg -version. Use encoders and formats present in that build, then repeat the short test.

  • Video or audio warnings, buffering, or poor playback: Compare your output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder table. Check whether the upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate.

  • The stream stops at the end of the video: The basic command handles one playback, not an infinite loop. Test an input-loop option against the specific file and FFmpeg build, especially the transition and timestamps.

  • FFmpeg is running but viewers cannot watch reliably: Check the source, network publishing, YouTube stream health, and actual viewer playback as separate failure points. Process survival alone is not proof of a healthy stream.

End the stream and understand the archive limit

Stop the encoder when you are finished and end the event deliberately in the Live Control Room. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; the cited guidance does not establish archive behavior for sessions longer than 12 hours. Do not rely on a longer broadcast being archived without checking YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Or let it run in the cloud
