To turn a video frame into a YouTube thumbnail, capture or export a clear still image, then upload it as the video’s custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio. For a standard video, prepare a 16:9 JPG or PNG; YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels. You can also use one of YouTube’s automatically generated suggestions instead.
Choose a frame that works at thumbnail size
Pause or scrub through the video to find a moment that represents it clearly as a still. Look for a readable subject and an image that makes sense without motion; a frame that looks good during playback can be hard to understand when reduced to thumbnail size.
Use a video editor or player that can export the current frame as an image. If you already edit in Adobe Media Encoder, an older Adobe reference documents selecting the current frame in Export Settings and using a custom-thumbnail option for a YouTube video. Because that reference is dated, check Adobe’s current documentation before relying on the feature. Adobe Media Encoder Export Settings
Alternatively, choose one of the generated thumbnail suggestions YouTube offers when editing the video. This avoids extracting a frame yourself, though you have less control over the exact moment selected.

Prepare the image for your video
Standard videos
YouTube recommends a 16:9 image at 3840 × 2160 pixels for standard videos, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. JPG and PNG are accepted formats. The upload-size limit depends on the route: 50 MB on desktop and 2 MB on mobile. These are YouTube’s current Help recommendations and limits; check the page if your upload is rejected or the guidance has changed. YouTube Help: Add custom thumbnails
If your extracted frame has different proportions or dimensions, crop or resize it in an image or video editor before uploading. Keep the important subject inside the crop, and export to a format and file size accepted by the device you will use.

Shorts
For Shorts, YouTube recommends a vertical 9:16 thumbnail at 2160 × 3840 pixels. Custom Shorts thumbnails are managed in YouTube Studio on a computer, according to YouTube Help. YouTube Help: Add custom thumbnails
Upload the frame in YouTube Studio
- Verify your YouTube account. YouTube requires account verification to upload custom thumbnails.
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Open the video you want to edit.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file, then select the image you prepared.
- Save the video changes. You can select a generated suggestion instead if you prefer.
YouTube also describes selecting an autogenerated or custom image and saving the choice through its Android instructions. The available controls can vary by app and video type; for a custom Shorts thumbnail, use Studio on a computer. YouTube Help: Add custom thumbnails

Check the thumbnail and platform rules
After saving, allow time for the update to appear. YouTube says changes may take time to show. For vertical videos, a 16:9 custom thumbnail may be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages, while the custom image can still appear on other surfaces. Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as examples that can lead to rejection or enforcement. YouTube may also limit how many custom thumbnails a channel can upload per day; limits can vary by country or region and channel history. YouTube Help: Add custom thumbnails

Compare thumbnail options before publishing
If you want to compare alternatives, YouTube’s Test & compare feature can test up to three thumbnail versions for eligible videos. YouTube says it is available in Studio on computers and requires advanced features. Public long-form videos and podcast episodes can qualify; private and made-for-kids videos are among the exclusions. Check YouTube’s eligibility details for the current rules. - You cannot find the upload option: verify the account, which YouTube requires for custom thumbnail uploads, and check that you are editing the intended video in Studio.
- The image will not upload: check that it is a JPG or PNG, meets the relevant size guidance, and is within the upload limit for your device: 2 MB on mobile or 50 MB on desktop.
- The image appears cropped or replaced: check its aspect ratio and remember that vertical-video thumbnails may display as an automatically generated 4:5 image on some YouTube surfaces.
- The new image has not appeared yet: wait and check again, since YouTube says thumbnail updates can take time to show.
- YouTube rejects the thumbnail: review it against Community Guidelines, including rules covering sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content.
