You generally can’t split a finished video into arbitrary parts and upload those pieces to YouTube Live as one broadcast. YouTube Live expects a continuous feed from an encoder, sent to YouTube with a server URL and stream key. If you need smaller files for storage or transfer, FFmpeg can split a video into separate media files—but that alone does not make a livestream.
First decide what you mean by “uploadable parts”
There are three different jobs that are easy to confuse:
- Broadcast a prerecorded video as live: Play or process the recording through a compatible encoder that sends a live feed to YouTube. The standard encoder workflow uses YouTube’s server URL and stream key. See YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance.
- Publish a regular video: Upload the video using YouTube’s video-upload workflow. Splitting the file does not turn an ordinary upload into a live event.
- Make smaller local files: Use a media tool such as FFmpeg’s segment muxer. This produces separate files for storage, transfer, or later processing, not a YouTube Live broadcast.
YouTube’s HLS ingestion is another distinct option: it is a live streaming protocol with playlists and media segments, not a general-purpose way to upload arbitrary pieces of an existing video.
To broadcast the recording, send a live feed
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires an eligible, verified channel. Confirm access to live streaming in YouTube Studio before preparing a long broadcast.
- Choose an encoder. Use software or hardware that can play or process the prerecorded video and send a continuous stream. A file splitter by itself cannot do this.
- Set up the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain the server URL and stream key shown for the event. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to that stream.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the server URL and stream key, select the recording as the source, and configure video and audio output supported by your encoder and YouTube workflow.
- Preview and test. Send a short test feed first. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and confirm that picture, sound, synchronization, and playback are correct before starting a long event. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup.
- Monitor the broadcast. Watch stream health and audio/video during the event. A large source file does not remove the need for a stable, sustained outbound connection.
For bandwidth, use the chosen live bitrate—not the size of the source file—to estimate the connection required. YouTube Help recommends leaving 20% headroom over the stream bitrate (“Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).”) The page does not state a publication date. Guidance: YouTube live encoder settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Split a large file locally with FFmpeg
If your goal is smaller files for transfer, storage, or later editing, FFmpeg’s segment muxer can create a series of media segments. Choose a container and codecs that fit the software or device that will use the segments, and preserve the generated segment list so you know their order.
A stream-copy split avoids re-encoding, but segment boundaries depend on keyframes in the source. The requested duration is therefore not a guarantee of exact, frame-accurate boundaries. If precise boundaries matter, re-encoding with keyframes at controlled positions may be necessary. FFmpeg documents the segment muxer and its options.

Because the right command depends on the source’s container, codecs, desired output container, and whether you need exact cut points, inspect a short sample and test the resulting segments in the intended player or workflow before processing the full file. Do not treat independently split MP4 files as parts that YouTube Live will automatically join into one event.
Join segments again only when their streams are compatible
When the goal is to reconstruct a file, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer may work when the segments have matching stream characteristics, including codecs and time bases. Incorrect duration metadata can cause gaps or artifacts, so inspect the joined output rather than assuming that a successful command produced a seamless file. See FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation.

HLS ingestion is not ordinary file splitting
If you specifically intend to send a live feed to YouTube using HLS, use an HLS-compatible encoder and follow YouTube’s ingestion requirements. YouTube Help specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. HLS has higher latency than a continuous RTMP feed. These are protocol requirements for live ingestion—not settings for dividing a finished video into upload-sized pieces. See YouTube’s encoder and HLS guidance.
Common problems and what to check
- You have smaller files, but no live event: The segmenter only created local media files. Use an encoder to send a live feed with the YouTube server URL and stream key.
- Splits do not land on the requested timestamps: With stream copy, cuts depend on existing keyframes. Re-encode with controlled keyframes when more accurate boundaries are required.
- Joined output has gaps or artifacts: Check that segment streams match, including codecs and time bases, and that duration metadata is accurate. Test the output before relying on it.
- The live feed buffers or drops: Check the sustained outbound connection against the selected stream bitrate and leave the 20% bandwidth headroom YouTube recommends. Test the encoder before going live.
- An HLS feed is rejected or unstable: Check segment duration, playlist window, HTTPS method, byte-range use, and encryption against YouTube’s HLS requirements.
- YouTube preview has no picture or sound: Check the encoder’s selected source, output configuration, server URL, and stream key, then send a short test and inspect stream health before the event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube channel that stays live, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or pricing. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
