1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo stream a 4K playlist continuously, make the video files compatible, put them in an FFmpeg concat playlist, then have FFmpeg read that playlist in real time and push it to YouTube Live over RTMPS. For H.264 SDR, YouTube recommends 30 Mbps at 2160p30 or 35 Mbps at 2160p60, with constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval. A VPS must sustain both the required encoding work and upload rate; there is no universal server size that guarantees this.
What you need before you start
- A VPS with FFmpeg installed, access to its shell, and enough sustained CPU and outbound network capacity for your chosen 4K profile.
- Video files you own or are licensed to broadcast, stored on the VPS or otherwise accessible to FFmpeg.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and a stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for a secure connection. YouTube’s live encoder settings and stream setup guidance explain the ingest options.
- An installed FFmpeg build with the encoder you intend to use. Check available encoders with
ffmpeg -encoders; availability depends on how FFmpeg was built.
Keep the stream key secret: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not paste it into a public script, repository, or support message. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room.
Choose a 4K profile
Set the output to 3840×2160 and choose a frame rate that suits the source and the motion in the videos. These are YouTube’s published live-ingest figures, not upload-file encoding targets. The H.264 recommendations are separate from the AV1 and HEVC ranges. See YouTube’s current encoder settings.
| Profile | H.264 live bitrate | Keyframes |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p30 SDR | 30 Mbps recommended | CBR; 2-second interval recommended, no more than 4 seconds |
| 2160p60 SDR | 35 Mbps recommended | CBR; 2-second interval recommended, no more than 4 seconds |
YouTube’s current table lists AV1 and H.265/HEVC bitrate setting ranges of 8–35 Mbps at 2160p30 and 10–40 Mbps at 2160p60. These ranges are not the H.264 recommendations; select the column for the codec actually sent, and confirm your FFmpeg build and ingest workflow support it. For conventional RTMP/RTMPS workflows, YouTube lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 as supported codecs. A 4K stream does not offer YouTube’s low-latency optimization. YouTube encoder settings

Inspect and prepare the video files
Check every file
Before building the playlist, inspect each file’s video and audio streams, codec, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and audio layout. For example, use ffprobe -hide_banner -show_streams -show_format input.mp4. Pay particular attention to differences between clips: concat streamcopy works best when corresponding streams have compatible properties, and it cannot resize, change frame rate, or repair an incompatible audio layout.
Choose streamcopy or normalization
- Use streamcopy when the files already match the output requirements and are compatible with one another. It avoids re-encoding and uses less VPS compute, but gives you no filtering or transcoding flexibility.
- Normalize first when clips differ materially in codec, resolution, frame rate, pixel format, or audio streams. Re-encode them to a consistent format before concatenating, or use an FFmpeg concat filter to normalize and join them in one operation. Filtering and re-encoding consume VPS CPU; test representative transitions before committing to a long broadcast.
FFmpeg documents both the concat demuxer and filter approaches; it does not guarantee that an arbitrary mix of files will join seamlessly. Concat demuxer documentation · Concat filter documentation
Create a concat playlist
For compatible inputs, create a text file such as playlist.txt with one entry per video, in the order you want them played:
file '/srv/videos/clip-01.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/clip-02.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/clip-03.mp4'

Use paths that exist from the FFmpeg process’s working environment. The concat demuxer has safe-path behavior; the example command below uses -safe 0 to allow paths that safe mode might reject. Only do this with a playlist you control. Check the concat syntax and safe-path behavior against the FFmpeg version installed on the VPS. FFmpeg concat documentation
Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream and find its stream settings.
- Choose RTMPS where available, then copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Do not use a placeholder or a URL copied from an unrelated example.
- Store the key where only the FFmpeg process and authorized administrators can access it. Avoid exposing it in shell history, process listings, logs, or shared scripts; use a protected environment or secret mechanism appropriate to your VPS.
YouTube’s controls and labels can change; follow the stream’s current Live Control Room settings for the actual ingest URL and key. YouTube stream setup · Manage live stream settings
Run FFmpeg in real time and loop the playlist
This is a command template for compatible 30 fps SDR files using H.264 at YouTube’s 2160p30 recommendation. Replace the ingest placeholder with the RTMPS URL and key from your Live Control Room. The example is not a tested recipe or a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain the workload.

Adjust for 2160p60
For a 60 fps source and 2160p60 output, use -r 60, a 120-frame GOP for a two-second interval, and YouTube’s 35 Mbps H.264 recommendation (for example, matching -b:v and -maxrate to 35M). Preserve the source’s intended frame rate rather than converting 30 fps material to 60 fps without a reason. Verify the resulting ingest in Live Control Room.

Streamcopy alternative
If the inputs are already compatible and meet the target requirements, replacing the video and audio encoder options with -c copy can reduce compute use. Streamcopy does not let you apply filters or normalize mismatched clips, and the resulting stream still needs to satisfy YouTube’s ingest requirements. Do not use it merely because it avoids encoding; first confirm the media and transitions.
Test the broadcast and watch stream health
- Start with a private or unlisted test, rather than making the first run a long public broadcast.
- Play representative sections with motion and audio, including transitions between files. YouTube advises testing before a live stream and checking representative audio and movement.
- In Live Control Room, verify the incoming resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and stream-health indicators.
- On the VPS, watch FFmpeg output, CPU use, and outbound network capacity. A host that cannot sustain the encode or send rate can fall behind or drop frames.
- Only continue to a longer broadcast after the test shows stable output. YouTube recommends choosing a quality that is reliable on the available connection; a particular VPS size or uninterrupted operation cannot be guaranteed from bitrate figures alone.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube reports no incoming stream: Check that the VPS can reach the selected ingest endpoint, that the URL and key are the ones currently shown in Live Control Room, and that FFmpeg is using the expected RTMPS output. Regenerate the key if you suspect it was exposed.
- Stream health is poor or output stalls: Check sustained upload capacity and CPU headroom. Re-encoding mixed 4K sources can be demanding. Reduce the target only if the resulting profile is supported and acceptable, or pre-encode compatible files and use a host that can sustain the chosen stream.
- Resolution or frame rate is wrong: Check the source files and explicit output options, then confirm the received values in Live Control Room. A command’s requested frame rate is not proof that the source or ingest is producing the intended motion.
- Playlist stops or fails at a clip boundary: Verify file paths, concat syntax, and stream compatibility. Test the transition; normalize the clips or use the concat filter if demuxer streamcopy cannot join them cleanly.
- Audio is missing, out of sync, or inconsistent: Inspect each input’s audio stream and layout, then explicitly map or normalize audio as needed. Re-test a transition and confirm the incoming audio in YouTube.
- FFmpeg rejects an option or encoder: Check the installed build’s version and encoder list, and consult its documentation. Encoder availability and option support vary by build.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Only broadcast videos and audio you have the rights to use. A playlist does not make third-party music, gameplay footage, or other video safe to rebroadcast; permission and platform rules still apply. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from whether FFmpeg can send a technically valid stream. Reused or repetitive material may also affect channel monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and channel monetization policies before scheduling a continuous broadcast.

Cost and operating trade-offs
A VPS approach adds recurring compute and network costs, and the required capacity depends on the source media, whether FFmpeg re-encodes it, the selected frame rate, and the provider’s available egress. The available YouTube bitrate guidance does not determine a VPS CPU, RAM, or bandwidth SKU. Estimate the full workload and test it on the intended host before relying on it for a long stream. Streamcopy can save encoding compute when media is already compatible; normalization and filtering improve control over mixed inputs but require additional processing.
