To shuffle multiple videos in an OBS YouTube Live stream and keep them repeating, add the files to an OBS VLC Video Source, then enable both Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist. Shuffle and loop are separate controls: shuffle changes playback order, while loop starts the playlist again when it reaches the end.
Set up a shuffled, repeating playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS uses VLC libraries for its VLC Video Source, so install VLC before adding the source. Match the architectures: OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC when you use 64-bit OBS. If VLC is missing or mismatched, the source may not be available.
- Add the source to the scene. In the OBS scene you plan to stream, add a VLC Video Source. Add your local video files to its playlist. This source is the built-in choice for playing several files as a playlist.
- Turn on both playback options. In the VLC Video Source properties, enable Shuffle Playlist and Loop Playlist. OBS documents shuffle as randomizing the media-file order and loop as repeating playback after the source reaches the end. Loop Playlist is on by default in OBS’s documented defaults, while Shuffle Playlist is off, so check both.
- Check the scene and audio. Confirm the source is visible in the active scene, that the intended files play, and that their sound reaches the OBS stream mix. Preview the scene before sending it to YouTube.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Start the OBS encoder and confirm the preview appears in Live Control Room; complete YouTube’s go-live step for that stream.
OBS’s source settings and implementation treat shuffle and loop independently; enabling only one does not produce a shuffled playlist that repeats. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation and its VLC Video Source implementation.
Choose the right OBS source

If you only need to repeat a single recording, Media Source is simpler. For a multi-file playlist whose order should vary, use VLC Video Source.
Keep the OBS playlist distinct from a YouTube playlist
This setup shuffles files inside OBS before the encoder sends the video feed to YouTube. It is not the same as looping a YouTube watch-page playlist: changing playlist playback on a viewer’s watch page does not configure the video that OBS sends as a live stream.

Optional: use a third-party playlist source
The OBS Project Forum listing for Media Playlist Source describes it as an alternative to VLC Video Source. The listing says it requires OBS Studio 30.0.0 or newer and advertises saved playback position and reshuffling after the last file plays. It is an optional third-party plugin, not a requirement for the built-in VLC workflow; check its listing for current compatibility and availability before installing it.
Check YouTube eligibility and content rights
- Channel eligibility: YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility guidance if Live Control Room will not let you start a stream.
- Permission to stream: A technically working playlist does not grant rights to its contents. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions require you to have the necessary rights for the material you stream, including relevant music licensing rights. Use videos and audio you are authorized to stream and, if you archive the broadcast, to keep in the archive.
- Protect the stream key: The stream key is a credential that lets YouTube accept the encoder feed. Do not share it or show it in a recording or screenshot. YouTube explains stream URL and key setup in its encoder live-stream setup guide.
Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then restart or reopen OBS and check again. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as OBS specifies.
- The playlist plays in order instead of shuffling: Open the source properties and enable Shuffle Playlist. OBS’s documented default is off.
- The playlist stops after the final file: Enable Loop Playlist. Shuffle does not itself repeat playback.
- A video or its audio is absent from the stream preview: Check that the source is in the active scene, that the file plays in the source, and that its audio reaches the OBS stream mix before starting the broadcast.
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm the encoder is running and that OBS has the selected stream’s matching stream URL and key. Check Live Control Room before taking its go-live step.
- YouTube will not allow the stream to start: Verify the channel and recent-restriction requirements, then check whether the material is cleared for live streaming.
