How to Prepare 720p Videos for a YouTube Live Playlist on a Budget PC in India

Use OBS and VLC for a looping YouTube playlist, configure 720p live settings, and test your PC and connection before leaving the stream running.

To run a 720p playlist on a budget PC, use OBS Studio with a VLC Video source for multiple files (or a Media Source for one file), then test YouTube’s 720p live settings on your actual connection and hardware. Start with 1280×720 output, 30 fps if your videos and PC can sustain it, H.264 at 8 Mbps recommended (3 Mbps minimum), CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. These are YouTube’s global recommendations, not a guarantee of performance on any particular Indian PC or internet connection.

Prepare the 720p video files

For a consistent playlist, use SDR video at 1280×720 and keep the source frame rate where practical. YouTube’s upload recommendations specify MP4, H.264, progressive scan, and a frame rate matching the recording. For 720p SDR uploads, it recommends 5 Mbps at standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 7.5 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). Those are file-upload recommendations, not live-stream ingest settings. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Check that the files play correctly, have the intended audio, and use the frame size and frame rate you plan to stream. A smaller or older PC may struggle with decoding, encoding, or complex scenes even when the files are only 720p; OBS says system demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Build the playlist in OBS

For several videos: use VLC Video

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says to install 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene.
  3. Choose the local video files and arrange them in the order you want.
  4. Set the source to play in order or shuffle, and choose whether it should loop. Check the selected behavior before going live.

OBS documents these playlist controls in its Media Sources guide. A playlist that is not set to loop will not keep replaying after it reaches the end.

For one video: use Media Source

Add a Media Source and select the local file. OBS Media Source supports common local video formats. Use its playback controls for a single-file setup; use VLC Video when you need a sequence of multiple files.

Set YouTube live output for 720p

In OBS, configure the stream for YouTube RTMPS and H.264, with a 1280×720 output resolution. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists the same H.264 bitrate figures for 720p30 and 720p60:

Live setting YouTube recommendation
Resolution and frame rate 1280×720 at 30 fps or 60 fps
Video bitrate 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum
Rate control CBR
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds

These are YouTube’s live ingest settings, not the upload-file bitrates above. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Choose 30 or 60 fps based on the source and PC

Use a frame rate the source and computer can sustain. Start with 30 fps if the video is 30 fps or lower, or if the PC struggles during a realistic test; 60 fps makes sense for high-frame-rate source material only if the machine and connection handle it reliably. YouTube lists the same recommended bitrate for 720p30 and 720p60, but that does not mean the workload is identical: OBS notes that demands vary by frame rate and scene complexity.

Use hardware encoding only when available and compatible

If OBS offers a compatible hardware encoder on the PC, it can offload encoding work from the CPU. Performance and quality vary by hardware and encoder, so this is not a promise that any particular budget PC can stream smoothly. OBS explains the trade-offs in its Hardware Encoding guide; its System Requirements page also cautions that basic compatibility is not a guarantee of performance for a specific workload.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test before relying on it

  1. In OBS, select YouTube RTMPS as the service and enter the stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it on screen.
  2. Confirm the playlist source is visible and that the intended loop or shuffle behavior is selected.
  3. Start a private or unlisted test stream if that suits your channel setup, then inspect the Live Control Room preview.
  4. Test with representative audio and video movement, not a static or muted clip. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and OBS for dropped frames, stuttering, or audio problems.
  5. If problems appear, change one setting at a time—such as switching from 60 to 30 fps or reducing scene complexity—then test again before leaving the stream unattended.

YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event and monitoring stream health. YouTube’s figures are global encoder recommendations; they do not establish India-specific upload speeds or performance on a given PC.

Troubleshoot common 720p playlist problems

  • VLC Video source is unavailable: Install VLC, matching OBS’s architecture; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • The playlist ends instead of continuing: Check the VLC Video source’s loop setting. Confirm that the files are in the intended order and that shuffle is off if you want a fixed sequence.
  • The stream stutters or OBS reports dropped frames: Test at 30 fps, simplify the scene, and compare the bitrate with your sustained upload capacity. The 8 Mbps recommendation is not evidence that a connection can maintain it continuously.
  • The PC overloads or video playback is uneven: Reduce workload by lowering frame rate or removing unnecessary scene elements, and check whether a compatible hardware encoder is available. A PC’s price or “budget” label alone cannot establish whether it can handle the job.
  • YouTube preview or stream health shows a problem: Verify RTMPS, the stream key, resolution, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval, then repeat a test with real audio and motion. If you exposed the stream key, replace it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
  • Sound is missing or out of sync: Confirm the selected file has an audio track and that OBS’s audio meters respond during playback; check the preview and a test recording or stream before starting a long session.

Budget and reliability considerations

OBS and local playback let you use your existing computer rather than buying a dedicated streaming appliance, but they require that computer and a sufficiently steady internet connection to remain available while the stream runs. Storage needs depend on the size of your video library; an external drive may help hold files, but it does not improve encoding or stream stability. There is no India-specific benchmark here that can predict the capability of an unspecified PC or internet plan, so test your own setup rather than selecting hardware based only on price.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a home PC and connection to stay on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
