For a local prerecorded video or playlist, OBS Studio is the most direct FFmpeg alternative: use a looping Media Source for one file or a VLC Video source for a playlist. Your computer must stay on and connected while OBS sends the feed to YouTube. If you want the loop to run without a home computer, StreamNeo is the cloud option to try first: it loops uploaded videos on YouTube, supports the quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Which FFmpeg alternative fits a prerecorded YouTube Live loop?
| Option | Best for | Loop and duration details | What must run |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Always-on YouTube playback from uploaded video or playlists, without a computer running at home | 24/7 looping and playlists; any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot | StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud; you provide a YouTube stream key |
| OBS Studio | A local single file or playlist, with control over an encoder scene | Media Source loops one file; VLC Video can loop a playlist | Your computer and OBS must stay running; VLC must be installed for the playlist source |
| Restream | A scheduled cloud-hosted prerecorded event | Paid looping allows up to 10 repeats and a maximum 40-hour stream | Restream hosts scheduled playback; confirm current plan eligibility |
| StreamYard | A browser studio for finite prerecorded segments, especially when studio tools matter | Its plan page lists prerecorded allowances of 2 hours on Core and 4 hours on Advanced | Browser-based studio; these allowances do not establish unlimited playlist looping |
| AJA HELO Plus | Scheduled prerecorded playback without a computer, using standalone hardware | YouTube documents the optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media | Dedicated encoder hardware; consider it only if a hardware workflow fits your setup |
These options solve different problems. OBS most closely replaces a local FFmpeg loop. Restream and StreamYard provide bounded or scheduled workflows, not evidence of an unlimited 24/7 loop. For continuous uploaded-video playback without keeping a computer running, StreamNeo is the closest fit.
Run a local loop with OBS Studio
Loop one video file
- Prepare the file. Confirm that the recording plays correctly and that you have the rights to stream its video and audio. Keep the source file accessible for the entire broadcast.
- Add the video source. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and choose the file.
- Enable looping. Turn on the source’s Loop option. Preview the scene and check the transition from the end of the file back to its beginning.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or open a live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password; do not include it in a video, screenshot, or public post.
- Set output and test. Choose a resolution and bitrate appropriate for your connection, start the OBS stream, then check YouTube’s live preview and status before relying on the feed.
Loop a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being available.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and create or select the playlist of files.
- Enable playlist looping in the source settings, then preview playback to confirm the playlist order and repeat behavior.
- Connect and test the YouTube stream as described above. Make sure the computer has access to every playlist file for the whole broadcast.
Set bitrate and connection headroom
YouTube recommends having upload capacity at least 20% above the stream’s total bitrate, and recommends testing the setup. For example, if the encoded stream uses 6 Mbps, aim for at least 7.2 Mbps of stable upload capacity. This is headroom, not a guarantee: competing uploads, Wi-Fi interference, and connection drops can still interrupt the stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance also recommends previewing and monitoring the broadcast.
Use a stable wired connection where practical, and avoid setting a bitrate higher than your connection can sustain. The appropriate resolution and bitrate depend on the content, encoder settings, and available upload bandwidth; do not assume that increasing resolution alone improves the result.

Cloud and studio alternatives: what their limits mean
Restream for a scheduled repeated event
Restream’s help documentation describes paid prerecorded-video looping with up to 10 repeats and a maximum 40-hour stream. That is a defined repeated event, not evidence of an indefinite 24/7 service. Check the current plan and workflow before scheduling, since plan eligibility can change.
StreamYard for bounded prerecorded sessions
StreamYard’s plan page lists prerecorded-stream allowances of 2 hours on Core and 4 hours on Advanced. Those are finite allowances; they do not establish unlimited playlist looping. It may suit a scheduled prerecorded segment in a browser studio, but it is not the documented choice for a continuous loop.

AJA HELO Plus for a hardware workflow
YouTube’s encoder documentation describes the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream functionality as a way to schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a specialized standalone hardware route rather than a simple software replacement, so weigh the need for computer-free scheduling against the added hardware setup.

Check channel eligibility
YouTube’s live-streaming help page says a channel must be verified, have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meet the minimum age requirement of 16. Confirm eligibility in YouTube Studio before preparing a long event; account access or restrictions can prevent streaming regardless of which encoder you use.

Use the stream URL and key securely
YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a stream URL and stream key in YouTube Studio. The encoder uses them to send the feed to the right live event. Keep the key private, and reset it if you expose it. A prerecorded video still arrives through an encoder workflow; labeling it as live does not alter YouTube’s copyright or content rules.
Plan for the archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer broadcast will be saved as one complete archive; if you need a recording, keep your own source files and plan how to preserve the output.

Copyright and policy checks for prerecorded video
The fact that a video loops or is transmitted as a live encoder feed does not establish that you have permission to use its footage, music, artwork, or other material. Before streaming, confirm that you hold the necessary rights or licenses and review YouTube’s current policies. No encoder or cloud looping service removes those obligations.
Troubleshooting a prerecorded YouTube Live loop
- The video plays once and stops: For a single file, verify Loop in the OBS Media Source settings. For a playlist, check the VLC Video source’s loop setting.
- OBS does not offer a VLC Video source: Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list again.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify that the stream URL and key belong to the intended live event, confirm the key was entered correctly, and check the channel’s live-stream eligibility.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: Compare the encoder’s total bitrate with stable upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test the connection and monitor YouTube’s preview and stream status.
- The loop breaks between files or at the end: Preview the source or playlist before going live, confirm all files are available, and check playback at the transition point.
- A long broadcast has no complete YouTube archive: YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. Preserve source files and plan a separate recording if you need a longer copy.
- A cloud event ends before the intended duration: Check the provider’s repeat count, maximum stream duration, and current plan limits. Restream documents a maximum 40-hour looped stream; StreamYard lists finite prerecorded allowances.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube playback of uploaded videos, not a camera feed. See StreamNeo or the plan details.
