If videos play in an unexpected sequence on YouTube Live, check the OBS source’s playlist order and turn off Shuffle Playlist in the VLC Video source’s properties. If “wrong order” means one image or video is covering another, adjust the scene’s Sources list instead; that controls visual layering, not playlist playback.
First identify which kind of order is wrong
- Playback sequence: OBS plays playlist files in an unexpected order. Check the VLC Video source’s entries and shuffle setting.
- Visual layering: A graphic or video appears in front of another source. Rearrange the scene’s Sources list.
Make these checks in the OBS scene that feeds your live output. Changing source layering will not change a playlist’s playback sequence, and changing a playlist will not move a graphic behind another source.
Fix the sequence in the VLC Video source
- In OBS, select the scene used for the live output and locate the source that plays the videos.
- Open that source’s properties. Confirm it is a VLC Video source, then review the playlist entries and arrange them in the intended order.
- Check Shuffle Playlist. Turn it off if you want the files to play in their listed order. OBS documents this control as deciding whether playlist files are randomized or stay in file-list order; its documented default is Off. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
Check the entries themselves as well as shuffle: a playlist set to play sequentially will still follow the wrong sequence if its items are listed in the wrong order.
Confirm that you chose the playlist-capable source
OBS’s Media Source is for an individual media file. VLC Video supports multiple playlist items. If you need a playlist but have added a Media Source, check the source type rather than looking for a playlist setting that belongs to VLC Video. OBS requires VLC to be installed for VLC Video to be available; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.

Fix visual stacking in the scene
If the video sequence is fine but a source is obscuring another, select the affected scene and use its Sources list. Sources higher in the list appear above sources lower in the list in the preview. Drag a source or use the up and down buttons to change its position. This changes what appears on top, not the order of VLC playlist files. See the OBS Project’s Sources Guide.
If the sequence is still unexpected
After checking the source type, playlist entries, and shuffle setting, note your OBS version, operating system, playlist contents, and the exact steps that reproduce the behavior. Those details help distinguish a configuration problem from a version-specific issue.
