To broadcast a full day of prerecorded video on YouTube Live, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, feed it a continuous playlist from an encoder or cloud service, and set the video bitrate below the stable upload capacity of the connection carrying it. YouTube’s recommended 20% upload-bandwidth headroom is a useful starting point. Plan a separate recording or shorter broadcasts if you need a complete archive: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What “compress” means for a YouTube Live broadcast
YouTube does not turn an uploaded video into a live event with a compression button. In this context, preparing a day of prerecorded content means arranging and encoding it as a continuous live feed, then sending that feed to YouTube through an encoder. The encoder’s bitrate affects the data rate of the outgoing stream; it does not remove the need to test your internet connection or secure the rights to everything in the program.
You can run playback and encoding software on a computer, or use a cloud service designed to keep prerecorded video streaming. YouTube lists Gyre as an option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. Check channel eligibility and create the live event
- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The person livestreaming must be at least 16. Initial enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until broadcast day. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and set its title, description, visibility, and schedule. The precise screens can change; follow YouTube’s current encoder setup guide.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with people who should not control the broadcast. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Check the event before going live. Confirm the selected event and visibility, and make sure the encoder is connected to the intended stream rather than a test or older event.
Choose how the prerecorded program will play
Computer and software encoder
A computer can play an ordered sequence of video clips and send its output to YouTube through a software encoder. YouTube names Wirecast as an example of software encoding and says hardware encoders are an option for higher-production events. A day of already-edited material does not by itself establish a need for professional hardware.

Build a playlist or playback sequence and check how your chosen player and encoder handle clip transitions, audio continuity, looping, and reconnects. Also determine what happens if the application, computer, power, or network fails. These behaviors depend on the specific setup; YouTube does not guarantee a universal looping or restart procedure.
Cloud service

Choose bitrate from measured upload capacity
Do not infer a safe stream bitrate from the source file’s size. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must stay within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That means a stream set to 8 Mbps needs a stable upload rate above 8 Mbps, with additional room rather than a connection that merely touches the target. If you send primary and backup streams at the same time, account for both.

Download speed does not tell you whether the connection can sustain the outgoing feed. In India, performance depends on your ISP, plan, location, equipment, and network load; there is no single India-wide bitrate that can safely be prescribed. YouTube’s streaming tips give the headroom recommendation.
Choose a resolution and bitrate your source and encoder can produce reliably, while keeping the total below tested upload capacity with headroom. If the connection is unstable, reduce the outgoing bitrate or resolution and test again instead of relying on a peak speed reading.

Start with YouTube’s encoder settings
YouTube’s general live-encoder recommendations are a baseline; confirm that your encoder and source support the settings you select. Its encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists:
- Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: a recommended two-second interval, not exceeding four seconds.
- Ingest protocol: RTMPS is recommended.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Ordinary SDR color: Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth.
Use an SDR workflow unless you have a reason and compatible source and encoder for HDR; YouTube’s HDR workflow has additional HEVC and HDR requirements. YouTube transcodes live streams for different viewing formats, so the encoder output is not the only version viewers may receive.
Run a preflight before the day-long broadcast
YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use that time to catch problems before viewers rely on the stream. Its live-streaming tips cover the platform’s preparation guidance.

- Open the Live Control Room preview and confirm that the correct video and audio are arriving before starting the event.
- Listen for missing, distorted, too-quiet, or unexpectedly continuous audio; watch for black frames, incorrect aspect ratio, and playback stutters.
- Test clip joins and the point where the playlist loops, if it does. Check that the sequence continues without an unintended gap or abrupt audio change.
- Confirm the event is reachable from the channel and watch pages and on a mobile device, using the intended visibility settings.
- Make a local recording if you need an archive, and verify that its file exists and is growing. Check available disk space for the planned recording duration and format.
- Check stable power and the recovery plan for a network or application interruption. Do not assume every encoder will reconnect or resume the playlist the same way.
Plan for an archive separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A full-day broadcast is beyond that stated window, so do not promise that YouTube will preserve it as one complete replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
If preserving the full event matters, record a separate local copy or divide the schedule into shorter broadcasts. An external SSD can be one way to keep a separate copy, but it is optional, not a streaming requirement; calculate storage needs from the actual recording format and duration before choosing a drive. Ensure the recording itself is intact rather than assuming a live archive is complete.

YouTube also requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines. The cited platform information does not establish which India-specific licences or other legal requirements apply to a particular creator or program. Do not treat that as proof that no local requirement exists; seek appropriate Indian legal guidance when the content or distribution model calls for it.
Troubleshooting common failures
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
- Likely causes: the wrong event, ingest URL, or stream key; an unenabled channel; or a key that has been changed or exposed.
- Fix: confirm live eligibility, select the intended event, copy its current URL and key from YouTube Studio, and reconnect the encoder. Replace an exposed key before resuming.
The stream buffers, drops, or shows poor quality
- Likely causes: bitrate too close to available upload capacity, variable network performance, or a connection shared with other traffic.
- Fix: measure upload performance on the broadcast network, reduce bitrate or resolution, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Retest under conditions similar to the planned stream.
Video appears but audio is missing or wrong
- Likely causes: muted source audio, incorrect encoder input, or incompatible audio settings.
- Fix: preview and listen before going live; check the selected audio source and use a supported AAC or MP3 configuration.
The playlist stops or restarts badly
- Likely causes: playback or encoder behavior at a clip boundary, a computer sleep or power event, or an unhandled disconnect.
- Fix: test the whole sequence’s joins and loop point, disable sleep for a computer-based setup, maintain stable power, and verify the chosen tool’s reconnect and restart behavior before broadcast day.
The YouTube replay is incomplete or absent
- Likely cause: the stream ran longer than YouTube’s stated 12-hour archive window.
- Fix: use a separate local recording or split the program into shorter streams if a complete replay is needed.
