You can run a YouTube radio-style livestream by sending a looping audio file or playlist through an encoder such as OBS Studio, with a static image as the visual. The do-it-yourself setup needs a computer, a reliable upload connection, music and artwork you have permission to use, and an eligible YouTube channel. The stream depends on the computer and connection staying operational; YouTube does not guarantee that a single broadcast will remain live indefinitely.
What you need before you start
- An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16.
- An encoder computer and dependable upload connection: OBS Studio sends the audio and image to YouTube. For a 24/7 broadcast, the computer must remain powered and the connection must keep uploading.
- Audio and artwork with suitable rights: Get permission to use both in a worldwide livestream, and check that the music license also covers an archived replay if you want one.
- A YouTube stream URL and stream key: You create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then enter these details in OBS. Treat the key like a password.
Set up the looping stream in OBS
- Prepare your media. Choose an image for the visual and either one audio file or a playlist. Confirm that your permissions cover YouTube livestreaming worldwide and, if relevant, replay. A personal listening subscription or a generic “royalty-free” label does not by itself establish those rights.
- Create a scene. In OBS Studio, add an Image source and select your artwork. Add a Media Source for a single audio file, select the file, and enable Loop. If you want multiple files, add a VLC Video source, configure its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS requires VLC to be installed for the VLC source.
- Create the encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Open OBS streaming settings and enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Use a compatible output format. YouTube’s encoder error guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for proper ingestion. A still image does not remove the need to send a valid video stream.
- Start a test and check the preview. Start streaming from OBS and confirm that Live Control Room receives the image and audio. Check the stream health indicator before going live to viewers.
- Go live and monitor it. Once the preview and audio are right, start the broadcast in Live Control Room if the stream is not configured to go live automatically. Keep an eye on stream health and the source playback during transmission.
Choose a single track or a playlist
| Setup | How it loops | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| One audio file | OBS Media Source with Loop enabled | A station identity built around one continuous recording, with little programming to manage. |
| Multiple audio files | OBS VLC Video source with a playlist and Loop Playlist enabled; VLC must be installed | Changing programming without manually replacing the source each time. |
Check the playlist order and transitions before broadcasting. The available OBS documentation supports looping a file and a VLC playlist, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted playback under every file, computer, or encoder failure.
Plan for bandwidth and long runtimes
YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity 20% above the stream bitrate. That is headroom guidance, not a guarantee: other devices and activity on a shared connection can reduce what is available to OBS. Test the actual connection while the household or venue is using the network as it normally would.
- Use a reliable connection and check stream health during a test broadcast. A wired Ethernet connection can be considered if your computer and router support it, but it does not increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet provider.
- For a true always-on setup, prevent the computer from sleeping and keep power, OBS, the media source, and the network operating. A local failure can interrupt the broadcast.
- YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited help does not establish that a single uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete replay. If an archive matters, consider shorter sessions and verify current Live Control Room behavior before relying on it.
Protect the stream from rights problems
YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including music rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Confirm that your license covers the relevant territory, a YouTube livestream, and any replay you intend to leave available. Rights for another service or for personal listening may not cover this use.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Its copyright guidance says it may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if third-party content remains. Even a licensed track may require the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Resolve that with the rights owner before launch rather than assuming a license will prevent an automated interruption.
Understand monetization limits
YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible livestream revenue features, subject to eligibility and settings. YouTube also notes that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. The availability of these features does not establish that a repetitive 24/7 broadcast made from prerecorded audio and a static image qualifies for monetization under current channel monetization policies. Do not build a revenue plan on an assumption that this format will be approved.
