To run a 24/7 YouTube sleep-music channel, you need music cleared for livestream use and a plan for YouTube’s archive limit: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Prepare a rights-cleared catalog, build and test a continuous audio-and-video feed, then choose how you will monitor failures and restart or segment the broadcast.
1. Confirm that your channel can livestream
- Verify the YouTube channel and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. YouTube says channels must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; the minimum age for livestreaming is 16. Follow YouTube’s current instructions in Get started with live streaming.
- Allow time for access to become available, then make a short private or unlisted test stream. Do not make your first test a long, unattended broadcast.
2. Clear every track for livestream use
Before assembling the playlist, confirm that you have the rights needed for the live broadcast. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions place responsibility for necessary rights, including music licensing rights, on the creator. A license for an uploaded video does not automatically cover a livestream; check the actual terms for live use, territory, duration, archiving and monetization.
Music sources to evaluate
- Music you composed and control: Confirm that you also control the relevant recording and any contributions or samples.
- Public-domain material: Check both the composition and the specific recording. A public-domain composition does not necessarily make a modern recording free to use.
- YouTube Audio Library: Review the terms attached to each item and confirm they cover your intended livestream use.
- Third-party licensed catalogs: Get permission that explicitly covers livestreaming and your intended archive and monetization. Keep copies of licenses, receipts, correspondence and usage terms.
Labels such as “royalty-free” or “free download,” and credit in a description, do not by themselves establish that a track is cleared for this use. YouTube warns that music described as free can still be flagged by Content ID; see Use music and sound effects from the Audio Library.
Ask about Content ID before going live
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A rights owner may cause a stream to be interrupted even if you have a license, unless the owner has allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Ask the licensor whether allowlisting is required and have them confirm that your channel is covered before launch. See Learn about Content ID claims.

Creator Music does not cover live radio
YouTube’s Creator Music usage guidance describes its licensed and revenue-sharing tracks for long-form uploads, not livestreams or Shorts. Check the terms for an individual track because rights-holder conditions vary and can change; do not use Creator Music as a shortcut to clear a continuous live broadcast. 3. Build and check the long-track loop
Assemble audio and visuals that you own or are permitted to use. A static image or gently changing scene may suit a sleep stream, but YouTube’s guidance does not identify a preferred visual format or promise that one will improve reach.

- Listen through transitions between long tracks. Check for gaps, clicks, abrupt changes in loudness, clipped audio and unexpected silence.
- Confirm that the video feed continues throughout the playlist, including during transitions and at the end of the final item.
- Check that the audio and picture remain in sync and that the stream does not accidentally end when the playlist reaches its last track.
- Keep a record of which tracks are in the playlist and the permissions that cover each one.
4. Send the feed with an encoder
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key to receive your live feed. Start in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, then use the current encoder streaming instructions to connect your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast into your encoder. Follow the encoder’s instructions for connecting and sending the prepared audio-and-video feed.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check that the expected picture and audio arrive before starting the public event.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Confirm that the playlist continues, audio remains clear, and the encoder and network stay connected for the duration you can reasonably test.
- When ready, start the live event in YouTube Studio and verify it from the channel or watch page, including on a mobile device.
You can use software on a computer or a hardware encoder. YouTube does not prescribe a computer model or certify a particular device for continuous sleep-music streaming, so choose based on your budget, ability to monitor it and recovery plan. A mini PC is one possible software-encoder host, not a platform requirement.

5. Plan for streams longer than 12 hours
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. That means a single uninterrupted 24/7 event is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube archive. Consult Archive live streams before deciding how to preserve a broadcast.
- If the archive matters: Keep a separate local recording, as YouTube recommends. Check during testing that the recording file is being created and continues to grow.
- If you need a YouTube archive: Plan to end and restart or segment broadcasts, and check each resulting archive. YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee that a particular restart interval will avoid interruptions or preserve every segment.
- If uninterrupted listening matters most: Weigh any restart plan against the chance of a brief interruption for viewers. Test the process before relying on it.
6. Monitor the broadcast and prepare recovery
A continuous channel needs an operations plan, not just a playlist. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, testing failover and monitoring stream quality. Its guidance does not set a required redundancy design or guarantee 24/7 uptime. See Live streaming tips and Troubleshoot live stream issues.

- Check the Live Control Room for stream health and confirm the encoder is still sending a feed.
- Listen for silence, distorted audio, loudness jumps or playlist failures; check the visual feed as well.
- Verify power and network status for the encoder setup and make clear who is responsible for responding to a stopped stream.
- Test the recovery procedure, including reconnecting the encoder and checking that the correct stream key and playlist are in use.
- Test failover if your encoder setup supports it, but do not treat a test as proof of guaranteed uptime.
7. Set viewer options and understand monetization
Use a title and description that accurately describe the music and stream. YouTube’s live settings include scheduling, DVR and latency controls. Lower latency can increase buffering and is less important when you are not interacting with viewers in real time; review the current live-stream settings guidance before choosing.
YouTube lists ads and Super Chat as livestream revenue features, while memberships are available to some channels. These features do not guarantee eligibility or earnings. Music rights can also restrict monetization, so verify that your permission covers it rather than assuming a stream that stays online can be monetized. See Monetize your live stream.

Common problems and fixes
