OBS Media Source Does Not Restart After a Video Ends on YouTube Live: Fix Looping

Enable Loop in the OBS Media Source properties to replay a single video. For playlists, use VLC Video Source and check Loop Playlist; preview the result in OBS before diagnosing YouTube output.

If an OBS Media Source stops after one play, open its Properties and enable Loop. That setting repeats a single file when playback ends. Restart playback when source becomes active does something different: it restarts the file when the source becomes visible in the current scene. For a playlist, use VLC Video Source and check Loop Playlist.

Choose the setting that matches what you want

What should happen? Source and setting
One local video should play again as soon as it reaches the end. Media Source → enable Loop.
A video should start over when its source becomes visible in the current scene. Media Source → enable Restart playback when source becomes active.
A playlist should repeat after its last item. VLC Video Source → enable Loop Playlist.

These controls are distinct. Show nothing when playback ends affects what is displayed at the end; it does not repeat the video. Close file when inactive concerns an inactive or hidden source, not end-of-file looping. OBS’s Media Sources documentation, published January 11, 2022, describes these properties and lists Media Source Loop as off by default and VLC Loop Playlist as on by default. Check the actual properties rather than relying on defaults: OBS Media Sources documentation.

Make one video loop in OBS

  1. In OBS, select the scene containing the video source.
  2. In the Sources dock, select the local video. If it is not already added, click + and choose Media Source, then select or create a source and choose the file.
  3. Open the source’s Properties.
  4. Check Loop, then click OK. OBS documents this option as replaying the file after playback completes.
  5. If you also want the video to start from the beginning whenever it becomes visible, check Restart playback when source becomes active. This controls source activation, not continuous replay at the end.
  6. Watch the OBS preview through the end of the clip. Confirm that it begins again before relying on the YouTube broadcast.

Make a playlist repeat

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS needs VLC available to provide the VLC Video Source.
  2. In OBS, select the scene and use Sources → + → VLC Video Source.
  3. In the source’s Properties, add the media files or playlist you want to play.
  4. Check Loop Playlist and click OK. OBS describes this as restarting the source when it has run out of media files.

For 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video Source is unavailable, verify that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches the OBS requirement.

Find out whether the problem is in OBS or the broadcast

Watch the OBS preview when the file reaches its end. If it stops there, focus on the source type and playback properties above. If the preview continues correctly but YouTube Live does not show the expected result, the available OBS documentation does not identify a YouTube-side cause. Treat that as a separate stream/output-path problem rather than changing encoder settings without evidence.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • It stays ended in the preview: confirm you used Media Source for one file and enabled Loop, or VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist for a playlist.
  • It starts over only after you show the source: that is visibility behavior; check Restart playback when source becomes active if that is the desired behavior.
  • It disappears at the end: Show nothing when playback ends can affect the display, but does not enable looping.
  • It fails after a rapid hide/show at the end: OBS issue #11040, opened July 29, 2024, reports a specific timing case in which the graphics thread may not process visibility changes immediately after playback ends. This report is a narrow edge case, not a general explanation for videos that stop. See the OBS issue report.

OBS’s Source API Reference documents media restart and lifecycle signals, but it does not establish a particular cause for an individual YouTube broadcast failure.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
