To change tracks automatically, build a playlist in your playout software or encoder before the feed reaches YouTube. One local-file option is to use OBS with a VLC Video Source, load audio tracks in playlist order, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS then sends the audio and visuals to YouTube Live. YouTube receives the finished stream; it does not manage the song queue.
How automatic track changes work
The playlist belongs in the software or hosting setup that plays your tracks. YouTube Live receives a continuous audio-video feed from an encoder, so changing songs means configuring the upstream playout source to advance through its playlist. YouTube’s HLS media playlist and video segments are part of delivery, not a music queue. See Google’s HLS ingestion documentation and its explanation of broadcasts and streams.
Set up a looping playlist with OBS and VLC
This local-file workflow is described by iTechGuides. Interface labels can vary by operating system and software version; check the current OBS and VLC controls if they differ from these names. The steps have not been independently verified across every version combination. For the referenced walkthrough, see iTechGuides’ OBS playlist guide.
- Enable live streaming and create a stream. In YouTube Studio, set up a live stream and follow YouTube’s encoder instructions. YouTube says initial live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. In the stream settings, note the stream URL and stream key; YouTube’s guide is Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Build the visual scene in OBS. Add the artwork, text, or other visuals you want viewers to see. Check that the scene has a valid video output as well as the audio source.
- Add the playlist source. Add a VLC Video Source in OBS, select the intended local audio files in the order you want them to play, and enable Loop Playlist. Confirm that the files are available to the machine running OBS and that the source’s audio is included in the scene’s output.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream settings, then start sending the feed. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Check playback before relying on it. Confirm YouTube receives the feed, listen for audio, watch for the playlist to advance to the next track, and verify that it loops after the last track. Check that the visual output remains present while songs change.
What has to keep running
Looping a playlist does not by itself keep a stream online. With local playout, OBS and its host machine must remain running, with power, network connectivity, accessible media files, and an active connection to YouTube. Plan how you will notice a failure and restart the feed. The cited guides do not establish a universal monitoring or recovery procedure for every setup.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is an archiving detail, not a guarantee that a longer live event will stay connected. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for operational details.
Choose local or remote playout
| Approach | Where playlist control lives | What to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Local desktop with OBS and VLC | On the computer running the encoder | Whether the computer, power, network, and media files can stay available; how you monitor playback and restart a dropped feed; and how you mix transitions and visuals. |
| Remote server or cloud playout | On a remote host or hosted service | Whether it supports your playlist schedule, monitoring and recovery needs, transitions, visuals, and rights workflow. Capabilities and reliability vary by provider and are not established by the cited sources. |
Check music rights before going live
YouTube Help states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; unresolved content can lead to interruption or termination. A license alone may not prevent interruption if the channel is not on the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. Confirm that your rights cover public live streaming and ask the rights owner about allowlisting where required. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Troubleshooting
- The stream is live, but there is no music: Check that the VLC Video Source is playing, the files are accessible, and its audio is routed to the OBS output being sent to YouTube.
- The playlist stops after the last track: Reopen the source’s playlist settings and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. Verify that the files are still present and playable.
- Tracks play, but the picture is missing: Check the OBS scene for a visible video source and confirm the stream output contains video as well as audio.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check the encoder’s stream URL and stream key against the current YouTube Studio stream settings, then confirm OBS is sending. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream: Review YouTube’s copyright notice and resolve any detected third-party match. If you have permission, confirm with the rights owner whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID.
- The stream drops when unattended: Check the host machine, power, network, and encoder process. A looping playlist cannot recover from every failure; choose monitoring and restart controls appropriate to where the playout runs.
