How to Show a Holding Screen Between Videos in a YouTube 24/7 Stream

A recurring holding screen between videos must be handled by your encoder or playback workflow. YouTube Take a Break is a manual away slate, not an automatic playlist transition.

For an automatically repeated holding screen between videos, configure the encoder or playback system that runs your stream to switch to a holding scene or source during each gap, then return to the next video. YouTube’s built-in Take a Break feature is for a temporary, manually ended away screen—not an automatic playlist interstitial.

Choose the right method for the screen you need

Need Use How it behaves
A screen after every video or during recurring gaps Your encoder or playback system Configure a holding scene or source to appear during each gap and switch back to video playback. The setup and automation depend on the software you use.
An occasional away screen during an active stream YouTube Take a Break Choose a 1-, 3-, or 5-minute break and an away slate. You must manually end the break in Live Control Room; the countdown ending does not resume the stream.

YouTube documents encoder-based streaming, but its guidance does not prescribe a universal automatic transition between playlist videos. Check the current scene and media-playback controls for your encoder, then test the complete transition before relying on it live. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains connecting an encoder to a live stream.

Set up a recurring holding screen with an encoder

  1. Prepare the sources. Set up the video playback source and a separate holding scene or source. Use a slate that tells viewers what to expect—for example, that the next video will begin shortly.
  2. Configure the transition. Set the playback or automation workflow to show the holding source during the gap, then return to the next video. Software differs, so use its current documentation for exact menu names and controls; do not assume every encoder has the same playlist or transition features.
  3. Check audio routing. Decide whether viewers should hear silence, slate audio, video audio, or a microphone during the gap. Mute any microphone that should not be heard while you are away, and check that the slate’s audio behaves as intended.
  4. Connect to YouTube. Choose the encoder’s YouTube destination if available, or enter the stream URL and stream key in the encoder. You can find the stream’s settings and key through YouTube’s Live Control Room stream settings. Keep the key private.
  5. Preview the full sequence. Before going live, test a video ending, the holding screen, the audio during the gap, and the start of the next video. Use YouTube’s preview and monitor the stream’s audio and picture. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for encoder preflight guidance.

Use YouTube’s Take a Break feature for a manual pause

Take a Break is appropriate when a creator needs an away slate during an active broadcast. YouTube documents 1-, 3-, and 5-minute durations. The slate can be YouTube’s default or an eligible video from the channel library. This is not a documented way to insert an automatic screen between each video in a continuous playlist.

  1. In Live Control Room, open the live stream’s settings and configure the Take a Break overlay.
  2. Choose the available duration and slate, then test the overlay before using it on the live broadcast.
  3. When ready to resume, return to Live Control Room and end the break manually. The timer reaching zero does not end the break for you.

The overlay does not change the stream’s audio sources. A video-library slate may play its own audio, while encoder audio settings may still need adjustment. Check microphone and slate routing before stepping away. YouTube describes the feature in its live-stream monetization guidance.

Plan for long-stream archives and DVR

A 24/7 live broadcast and its replay are separate considerations. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers that a complete 24-hour replay will be available. Check YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.

Common problems and fixes

  • The holding screen never appears between videos: Confirm that your encoder or playback system is configured to switch sources at the gap. YouTube’s Take a Break feature is manual and does not provide that recurring transition.
  • The break screen appears, but the stream does not resume: If you used Take a Break, return to Live Control Room and end it manually; the countdown does not resume the stream automatically.
  • Viewers hear a microphone or unexpected audio during the slate: Review the encoder’s audio routing, mute sources that should be silent, and test any audio included in the slate. The YouTube overlay itself does not change audio sources.
  • The stream connects, but the transition is unreliable: Test the whole sequence before going live and monitor the encoder preview and stream audio and video. Verify that the selected software supports the scene and playback automation you configured.
  • The long broadcast is missing or incomplete in replays: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR can be limited on very long streams. Do not treat the live broadcast as a guaranteed complete replay.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos while your own computer is off, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
