To stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from a Contabo VPS, run FFmpeg on the VPS, read the file at real-time speed, and send the output to the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. First confirm YouTube Live is enabled for your channel; then test the feed and its picture, sound, and stream health before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- A Contabo VPS with the video file available locally and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for your selected stream bitrate.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS. You may copy the source video’s streams or transcode them, depending on the file’s codecs and the output settings you need.
This method sends a live encoder feed; it does not upload the file as a YouTube video. The VPS reads the file and transmits it to the endpoint and key YouTube assigns to your stream.
Prepare the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Choose its privacy and scheduling settings.
- Copy the encoder URL and stream key shown for that stream. The stream key is a credential that authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public post, screenshot, or world-readable script.
- Use YouTube’s provided endpoint rather than assuming a particular ingest hostname or path. If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder using the replacement key. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
Check the file and choose output settings
Inspect the source before building the command: note its resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and audio tracks. If its codecs and format suit the stream, copying the streams avoids an unnecessary transcode. If you need to change resolution, frame rate, codec, or bitrate, the VPS must encode the video in real time; that adds CPU demand.
YouTube ingest recommendations
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Consult the YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the current value matching your codec, resolution, and frame rate.

These are YouTube’s listed recommendations for the specific H.264 formats shown, not universal bitrates for every codec or file. Match the frame rate and keyframe interval to the output you intend to send. YouTube advises that the stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom; see its streaming tips.
Check the VPS, not just the plan label
No particular Contabo VPS plan can be identified here as suitable. Before choosing resolution or committing to a long broadcast, check the current plan’s CPU, sustained outbound capacity, traffic allowance and overage terms, network reliability, and server location. Measure sustained upload under realistic conditions and leave the recommended headroom. A plan with enough headline bandwidth may still be unsuitable if it cannot sustain the feed or, when transcoding, encode the chosen output in real time.

Install FFmpeg and start with a test
Install an FFmpeg build on the VPS using the package method supported by its operating system, then upload the video or make it accessible at a stable path. The following is an illustrative H.264/AAC template for a looping file, not a tested command for every media file, FFmpeg build, or VPS:

-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'Replace the input path and endpoint with your own values, using the exact ingest URL and key from Live Control Room. Do not copy the placeholder endpoint literally. The example sets 30 fps and a 60-frame GOP, corresponding to a two-second keyframe interval at that frame rate. Its 4,500 kbps video rate is only an example; choose a rate from YouTube’s table for the target format and your measured VPS capacity. Confirm that the selected FFmpeg build and endpoint support the protocol you use.

FFmpeg’s -re option is equivalent to -readrate 1; it paces a file input at its native rate, which is useful when output packets need to flow in real time. FFmpeg documents command-line option behavior and RTMP and RTMPS protocols. Option order matters because command-line options apply to the following input or output.
- For the first run, use an unlisted test stream if appropriate. Keep the URL and key private, then start FFmpeg.
- Wait for the incoming feed and preview to appear in Live Control Room. Check the image, audio, and stream-health indicators.
- If the event is scheduled for manual start, use Live Control Room to start it after the encoder feed is ready. Monitor the broadcast rather than assuming a successful FFmpeg process means YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- After the broadcast, end the YouTube event and stop FFmpeg. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not infer that a longer stream receives the same automatic archive treatment.
Common problems and fixes
