A 24/7 YouTube livestream uses about 0.324 decimal TB per month for every sustained 1 Mbps of total outgoing bitrate, assuming a 30-day month. Multiply the bitrate in Mbps by 0.324: an 8 Mbps stream uses about 2.59 TB before overhead. The VPS being in India does not change the arithmetic; its region can affect the provider’s transfer allowance, billing and network path.
Estimate monthly data from your stream’s bitrate
Use the total bitrate sent out by the VPS, not just the video bitrate if audio is counted separately. At a steady rate, the calculation is:
Monthly decimal TB = total bitrate (Mbps) × 3,600 × 24 × 30 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000
For a 30-day month, this simplifies to Mbps × 0.324. The figures below are calculated payload estimates, not measured VPS usage or a guarantee of what a provider will bill.

These calculations use decimal units: 1 TB = 1,000 GB. If the stream runs for fewer than 30 days, multiply the monthly estimate by the number of online hours divided by 720. For example, 15 days at 8 Mbps is approximately 1.30 TB before overhead.
What changes the real VPS transfer total?
Protocol overhead and reconnects
The calculation estimates the stream payload. Protocol overhead, retransmissions and reconnects can add traffic, as can other services using the VPS. Leave headroom rather than choosing a transfer allowance that exactly matches the estimate.

Provider units and regional terms
Hosting providers may report transfer in GB or GiB and may apply different allowances, overage charges or throttling by plan and region. Check the exact plan’s outbound transfer terms for its India region; the VPS’s location does not change the bitrate-based volume, but provider policy can change the cost.
Forwarding versus encoding
Data transfer and compute are separate questions. A VPS forwarding an already encoded stream has a different workload from one encoding video in real time. The transfer calculation alone cannot establish the CPU or RAM needed to sustain a stream.

Choose a bitrate using YouTube’s current guidance
YouTube’s official encoder guidance varies by codec, resolution and frame rate, and includes recommendations for CBR and RTMP/RTMPS. One official locale page lists H.264 examples of 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; these are examples from that page, not universal settings. Check YouTube’s current table for your chosen format and codec: YouTube Live encoder settings. The page also advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Once you have selected the actual outgoing bitrate, use that total bitrate in the monthly estimate, then add headroom and compare the result with the provider’s allowance and billing terms.
