How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Playlist Stream on AWS EC2 in India

You can run a continuous YouTube playlist from an always-on Linux EC2 instance in India by having FFmpeg loop or sequence your media and send it to YouTube Live over RTMPS. YouTube provides the ingest address and stream key; EC2 runs the encoder. The setup is feasible, but there is no universal instance size or fixed monthly cost: both depend on your media, whether it needs transcoding, and the region and services you choose.

How the EC2-to-YouTube setup works

The basic path is media files on the instance (or accessible storage), an encoder process such as FFmpeg, and an outbound RTMPS connection to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP (YouTube encoder settings; RTMPS delivery documentation). EC2 keeps the encoder running independently of your home computer, but does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted streaming: the instance, network route, encoder, or YouTube ingest can fail.

Before you deploy

  • Make sure live streaming is enabled for your YouTube channel and complete any required channel setup before the planned start. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours (YouTube’s encoder setup guide).
  • Confirm that you have the necessary distribution and public-performance rights for every video and audio item. Having a file does not establish permission to broadcast it.
  • Choose an India AWS region after checking current EC2 availability and regional prices. Choose an instance only after considering the source format, output resolution and frame rate, and whether you will transcode.
  • Decide whether you need a live replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not promise an archive for longer broadcasts (YouTube’s encoder setup guide).

Set up the stream step by step

  1. Prepare and validate the media. Check that files play correctly, their audio is present, and transitions are acceptable. For a single video, FFmpeg documents infinite looping with -stream_loop -1. For a sequence of files, its concat demuxer can join compatible media, but differences in stream layout, time bases, or duration can cause errors, gaps, or artifacts. Test the actual playlist, including transitions and timestamps, before scheduling a long broadcast (FFmpeg demuxer documentation).
  2. Create a YouTube Live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password and address; treat it as a secret. If it is exposed, reset it through YouTube’s stream settings (Manage live stream settings).
  3. Launch an EC2 Linux instance in your chosen India region. Select a current instance family and size based on a benchmark with your real media and encoding settings. If the source already matches a suitable output format and can be passed through, the workload may differ substantially from a full software transcode. This guide does not prescribe an instance size because no single size is established for every playlist.
  4. Install FFmpeg and configure the encoder. Set the YouTube server address, stream key, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. YouTube recommends H.264 video, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio (YouTube encoder settings). Keep the key out of public scripts, repositories, and logs; use a protected environment file or secret store with restrictive access.
  5. Allow and verify outbound RTMPS. Use the correct YouTube ingest hostname and application path supplied for your stream, and confirm that the instance can reach the endpoint over port 443. YouTube’s RTMPS documentation describes the endpoint requirements (RTMPS delivery documentation).
  6. Run the encoder under supervision. Configure an operating-system service or process supervisor to start it after reboot and restart it after a crash. Retain logs, monitor the local process, and check YouTube’s stream-health display. A restart policy helps recover from an encoder exit; it cannot remove instance, network, or ingest failures.
  7. Verify the live output. Start with a representative section of the playlist. Confirm in Live Control Room that video and audio arrive, review stream health, and check the broadcast from a viewer’s perspective before leaving it unattended.

Choose output settings that fit the playlist

YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include the following bitrate targets. They are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular EC2 instance can encode in real time.

Output profile YouTube-recommended bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

Use a profile appropriate to the source rather than defaulting to the highest resolution. Higher output settings can increase encoding demand and outbound data use without improving material that was recorded at a lower resolution or frame rate. Test with representative motion and audio, then monitor both encoder performance and YouTube stream health. The current recommendations are in YouTube’s encoder settings documentation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Make a continuous stream operable

A loop flag or playlist command only describes media playback; a dependable deployment also needs process and service monitoring. Plan for these operational checks:

  • Keep the stream key in a protected location with limited permissions, and rotate it if exposed.
  • Retain enough logs to diagnose encoder exits, input-file errors, and connection failures.
  • Alert if the encoder process stops, and separately check YouTube’s ingest health; a running process does not necessarily mean a healthy live stream.
  • Test reboot behavior and recovery using the actual service configuration rather than assuming that a terminal session will persist.
  • Periodically validate the playlist and media files, especially after changing content or the concat list.

Understand AWS costs and replay limits

The EC2 bill for this design depends on the selected region, instance family and size, how long it runs, storage, data transfer, and any additional AWS services. Check the live AWS pricing for the India region and estimate the workload you actually intend to run; a published price for another architecture is not a valid estimate for one EC2 encoder.

AWS’s live-streaming deployment guide includes a US East (N. Virginia) example of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour 540p event reaching about 1,000 viewers, including $67.24 for CloudFront distribution. That is a managed delivery example, not the cost of a single EC2 instance in India (AWS deployment planning). AWS also documents a managed architecture using MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront for 24×7 live channels; it serves broader packaging and viewer-distribution needs and should not be confused with this simpler encoder-to-YouTube path (AWS video architecture documentation).

For replay, YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise that a broadcast exceeding 12 hours will be archived in full. If a reliable replay is important, verify current YouTube behavior and consider ending and starting shorter broadcasts rather than relying on an unpromised archive (YouTube’s encoder setup guide).

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube shows no incoming stream: check that the copied server URL and key match the stream, that the key has not been reset, and that outbound RTMPS to the correct endpoint on port 443 is available.
  • The stream connects but drops repeatedly: inspect encoder and service logs, instance and network stability, and YouTube stream health. Configure supervision to restart a failed process, then identify the underlying cause rather than treating repeated restarts as a fix.
  • Video stutters or the encoder falls behind: benchmark the actual encode on the selected instance. Reduce output complexity or choose capacity appropriate to the workload; do not assume an instance can sustain a given profile merely because YouTube recommends its bitrate.
  • Audio or video breaks at playlist transitions: check file compatibility, timestamps, stream layout, and duration assumptions in the concat input. Validate every transition before relying on a long loop.
  • The stream is live but has no usable replay: check broadcast duration and current YouTube archive behavior. Automatic archiving is stated for streams under 12 hours, not promised for longer broadcasts.
