To run a 24/7 YouTube stream from a cloud server with a limited transfer allowance, set one encoder to send a single contribution stream to YouTube and keep its bitrate within your monthly budget. At a constant bitrate, plan on about 324 decimal GB per month for each 1 Mbps of continuous streaming over 30 days—before protocol overhead and provider-specific billing rules.
How much data does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?
Use this planning formula for a continuous 30-day month:
Monthly decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324 × fraction of the month online
The estimate comes from bitrate multiplied by 30 days of streaming. It assumes a steady bitrate and decimal gigabytes; it does not include protocol overhead, reconnects, telemetry, or differences between decimal and binary units. Leave a safety margin rather than using the entire advertised allowance.

| Continuous bitrate | Estimated transfer over 30 days |
|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | About 324 GB |
| 4 Mbps | About 1,296 GB (1.3 TB) |
| 6 Mbps | About 1,944 GB (1.9 TB) |
| 10 Mbps | About 3,240 GB (3.2 TB) |
For a stream that runs 20 hours a day rather than continuously, multiply the estimate by 20/24. These are calculated planning figures, not hosting-provider quotes.
Choose a bitrate that fits the data cap
Resolution and frame rate determine the practical quality target; bitrate drives the transfer estimate. YouTube’s currently documented H.264 recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Check YouTube’s current table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use, since recommendations can change.

Pick the lowest quality that works for your content, then calculate its monthly transfer. A visually simple scene may work at a lower bitrate than fast-moving gameplay, but test representative motion and audio before leaving the stream unattended.
Check the provider’s transfer accounting
A headline monthly allowance is not enough to determine the cost. Check the selected plan’s region, whether inbound and outbound traffic count, how allowances are aggregated, and what happens when you exceed the cap. Also consider sustained upload quality, server availability, and whether you can monitor and restart the encoder.

AWS Lightsail illustrates why provider rules matter: its documentation says both inbound and outbound traffic count toward an instance’s allowance, while excess inbound traffic is not charged and excess outbound traffic can incur fees. Allowances vary by region and are aggregated in specified ways. Confirm the current terms for the exact region and instance; do not assume another host uses the same accounting.
A standard cloud-encoder workflow sends one stream to YouTube. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for viewers, so the cloud server does not send a separate copy to each viewer. A separate architecture that distributes video from your own infrastructure or a CDN has additional delivery traffic and costs; it is not required for ordinary YouTube ingestion.

Set up the cloud encoder and YouTube stream
- Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. In YouTube Studio, create or select the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private.
- Choose the encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transmission. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a keyframe interval of two seconds (do not exceed four seconds). Supported audio codecs include AAC and MP3. Use the bitrate recommended for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Configure the encoder to send one contribution stream. Enter YouTube’s server URL and the private stream key in the encoder running on the cloud server. Set the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings. The exact UI labels depend on the encoder you choose.
- Run a test before going unattended. Start with an unlisted test if appropriate, check the YouTube preview, and review stream-health messages. Use audio and motion similar to the real program; YouTube recommends testing with representative content and monitoring stream health.
- Estimate the monthly transfer and compare it with the allowance. Apply the formula above to the configured bitrate and expected uptime. Compare the result against the provider’s regional rules and overage policy, with room for overhead and reconnects.
Keep continuity and archives in mind
A continuously running encoder does not necessarily produce one complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If individual YouTube archives matter, plan session endings and restarts before that threshold, and test how your encoder and stream behave when one session ends and another begins.
Keep a local recording as a backup when the content matters. Monitor both the live stream’s health and the recording file, and use a process monitor or service manager suited to the server and encoder so a crash is visible and recoverable. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but does not prescribe a particular watchdog or guarantee uninterrupted uptime.

Troubleshoot common data and stream problems
- Transfer is higher than the estimate: Check the encoder’s actual sustained bitrate and uptime, then account for protocol overhead, reconnects, and the provider’s units or aggregation rules. The formula is an estimate, not a billing meter.
- The stream exceeds the allowance: Reduce bitrate by selecting a lower resolution or frame rate that still suits the content, recalculate monthly usage, and check the plan’s overage treatment and regional allowance before continuing.
- YouTube does not show a healthy preview: Confirm the channel is authorized to stream, the server URL and stream key are correct, and the encoder settings match the selected stream. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and test again.
- The stream drops or the encoder exits: Inspect the server and encoder logs, verify the process is running, and use an appropriate monitor or service manager to detect and restart it. Test recovery rather than assuming it will happen automatically.
- A long stream has no complete archive: YouTube warns that a stream over 12 hours may not be captured. For future sessions, schedule shorter segments and retain a local recording if an archive is essential.
