To stream a prerecorded 4K video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, create a live event in YouTube Live Control Room, copy its ingest URL and stream key, then run FFmpeg with -re so it sends the file at normal playback speed. For an H.264 stream, YouTube recommends 42 Mbps at 30 fps or 50 Mbps at 60 fps, with a two-second keyframe interval. Test the complete setup before broadcasting: your FFmpeg build, source file, computer and upload connection all affect whether the template below works as intended.

Before you start

  • A video file with known dimensions, frame rate, audio tracks and color format. A 4K file is typically described as 2160p; confirm its actual properties rather than relying on its filename.
  • An FFmpeg build that includes the encoder and audio support you plan to use. The example uses libx264 and AAC; availability depends on how FFmpeg was built.
  • A YouTube channel and access to YouTube Live Control Room to create or select a stream and retrieve its destination and stream key.
  • A measured upload connection that can sustain the selected video bitrate with headroom for fluctuations. A speed test is more useful than assuming that a connection barely matching the video bitrate will be reliable.

The command is an adaptable template, not a tested recipe for every operating system or file. Check the source, local FFmpeg capabilities and YouTube’s current instructions before relying on it for an event.

Choose codec, frame rate and bitrate

YouTube’s live-ingest figures below are recommendations for sending a live stream, not export settings for uploading a video file. Bitrate depends on both codec and frame rate. For the compatibility-oriented command later in this guide, use the H.264 figures.

Codec 4K/2160p at 30 fps 4K/2160p at 60 fps
H.264 11 Mbps minimum; 42 Mbps recommended 14 Mbps minimum; 50 Mbps recommended
H.265/HEVC or AV1 8 Mbps minimum; 30 Mbps recommended 10 Mbps minimum; 35 Mbps recommended

These are YouTube’s live encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026; they are not guarantees that a particular connection or encoder will deliver a healthy stream. The minimum is not a sensible target if the connection only just reaches it. Measure upload capacity and leave room for normal network variation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep the output frame rate deliberate

Match the output to the source when practical. Do not convert a 30 fps file to 60 fps just to use a higher setting: that does not create new motion detail and can add needless encoding work. The command uses 30 fps; for genuine 60 fps output, use the 60 fps values in the adaptation notes below.

Set a two-second keyframe interval

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The corresponding GOP length is output frame rate multiplied by two: 60 frames at 30 fps, or 120 at 60 fps. YouTube lists CBR as the bitrate encoding mode; the example sets a target and maximum bitrate, but confirm your encoder’s behavior and the platform’s stream-health feedback.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream/event you intend to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. YouTube’s setup guidance has you enter the destination and key in your encoder. It normally detects resolution and frame rate; a custom stream key can enable manual selection.
  3. Use the exact server URL and protocol shown in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. The example command below uses an RTMP-shaped illustrative destination; substitute the actual destination YouTube provides, including RTMPS if selected.
  4. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, shared log or public repository. Avoid putting it somewhere others can access through shell history or process logs; rotate it in YouTube if it is exposed.

Run FFmpeg at real-time speed

Replace input.mp4 and the illustrative destination with your file and the exact ingest URL plus stream key from Live Control Room. The sample is for SDR-style H.264 video with AAC audio at 30 fps.

ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 42M -maxrate 42M -bufsize 84M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

FFmpeg ordinarily processes a file as fast as it can. Putting -re before the input makes it read at the file’s native rate, which is important when using a prerecorded file as a live source. FFmpeg’s official RTMP example likewise uses real-time pacing, H.264, AAC and FLV output. The illustrative RTMP URL is not a substitute for the destination shown for your YouTube stream.

What the main options do

  • -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream. -map 0:a:0? selects the first audio stream if present; the question mark makes that mapping optional. If your file has no audio or has multiple intended tracks, choose the mapping deliberately.
  • -c:v libx264 encodes H.264. -preset veryfast is a compute-versus-compression-efficiency choice, not a promise that a given computer can encode 4K in real time. Check the machine’s actual load during a test.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p is a compatibility-oriented SDR choice. The example does not preserve an HDR workflow.
  • -r 30, -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 set a 30 fps output and a 60-frame, approximately two-second GOP. -sc_threshold 0 disables scene-cut keyframe insertion in this x264-oriented template.
  • -b:v sets the video bitrate target; -maxrate and -bufsize are encoder rate-control settings. The buffer value is not a guarantee of network buffering or reliability.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes stereo-style audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s listed stereo guidance. Confirm the source audio layout and intended output.
  • -f flv selects the FLV muxer used in FFmpeg’s documented RTMP example.

Adapt the command for 60 fps

If the source is genuinely 60 fps and you want 60 fps output, change -r 30 to -r 60, change -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 to 120, and use -b:v 50M -maxrate 50M for YouTube’s recommended H.264 4K/2160p 60 fps bitrate. Make sure your measured upload connection has adequate headroom and your encoder can sustain the workload.

HDR needs a different, verified workflow

This template’s yuv420p H.264 settings are not an HDR-preserving recipe. YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC for HDR, with 10-bit video; its guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Verify that your FFmpeg build, encoder and selected transport support the intended HDR format, and confirm the outgoing color properties. Do not describe footage as HDR output if the conversion has silently changed or discarded its HDR characteristics.

Preflight and monitor the broadcast

  1. Inspect the video’s dimensions, frame rate, audio streams and color format. Decide whether the intended output is 30 or 60 fps before changing command values.
  2. Confirm that your FFmpeg build has the needed encoder and AAC support. Build options vary; a command referring to an unavailable encoder will fail.
  3. Measure upload speed and choose a bitrate your connection can sustain with room for fluctuation. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and says, “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.”
  4. Start an unlisted or otherwise safe test with representative motion and audio. Check that Live Control Room reports the intended resolution and frame rate, inspect sound and picture, and review stream-health status and encoder messages.
  5. During the event, keep an eye on encoder load, network stability and Live Control Room diagnostics. Playback availability at 4K can depend on processing; do not assume viewers will immediately see a 4K playback option.

YouTube’s low-latency optimization is not available for 4K/2160p: 4K streams use normal latency. Plan for that delay when coordinating a live chat, game event or other time-sensitive interaction.

Troubleshooting common failures

YouTube does not receive a signal

Check that the event is ready in Live Control Room, the URL and stream key belong to that event, and the destination protocol matches the provided ingest URL. A mistyped or exposed-and-rotated key will prevent the encoder from connecting. Keep the key private when sharing command output for diagnosis.

The stream buffers, drops frames or stops

First compare actual upload capacity with the chosen bitrate and look for network variation; then check whether the computer is keeping up with 4K encoding. Reduce the output burden or bitrate if the connection or encoder cannot sustain it, then retest. A generic FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery option exists, but it is not a YouTube reliability guarantee or substitute for a stable connection.

The output is not recognized as 4K or at the expected frame rate

Check the encoded output properties and the selected stream configuration in Live Control Room. YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate; if detection is wrong, inspect the custom-key/manual-resolution options and change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause.

FFmpeg reports an encoder or mapping error

Verify that the local build includes libx264 and AAC support. Check whether the input actually contains a video stream and an audio stream: the optional audio map handles no audio, but additional tracks may require explicit mapping choices.

The stream looks wrong or lacks expected HDR

Confirm the source and output color format and whether the command’s SDR-oriented pixel format altered the intended workflow. For HDR, use a verified H.265/HEVC 10-bit path supported by your encoder and transport rather than assuming this H.264 template preserves HDR.
