For a long OBS recording that must survive a crash or power loss, record to MKV rather than regular MP4 or MOV. OBS says an unfinished MKV remains playable and recoverable, while regular MP4/MOV can become unrecoverable if writing is interrupted. If you need a standard MP4 for editing, remux the completed MKV in OBS afterward.
Choose a recording format that can survive an interruption
A container determines how video and audio are packaged; it is separate from the codecs that encode them. For local 24/7 recording, the key question is whether the container remains usable if OBS, the computer, or power stops before the recording is finalized.
| Format | Interrupted recording | Codec and workflow considerations |
|---|---|---|
| MKV | OBS recommends it when unforeseen interruptions are a concern. An unfinished MKV remains playable and recoverable. | OBS says MKV supports every encoder combination in OBS. Remux it if your editor needs a standard MP4. |
| Regular MP4/MOV | Requires file finalization. OBS warns that an interrupted write may leave the file unrecoverable. | Use only when the recording can finish cleanly and the workflow requires it; it is not the safer direct-recording choice when crashes or power loss are in scope. |
| Fragmented MP4/MOV | Fragmented writing avoids the same finalization dependency as regular MP4/MOV. | Check the specific OBS format and codec support against your playback and editing needs. |
| Hybrid MP4/MOV | OBS describes Hybrid formats as recoverable after an aborted write. They use fragmented writing and a soft-remux finalization for wider compatibility. | Hybrid MP4 is available in OBS 30.2 and later and supports H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video. Hybrid MOV supports H.264, HEVC, and ProRes. Hybrid MP4 has limited PCM audio compatibility; check OBS’s format guide and your editor before choosing. |
These format behaviors come from OBS Project’s Audio/Video Formats Guide and Standard Recording Output Guide; they are documented behavior, not a guarantee that every damaged file can be recovered. For the simplest resilient default, use MKV. Consider Hybrid MP4 if your OBS version offers it and you need MP4 compatibility, then verify that its codecs work in your intended editor.
Set up OBS for a long local recording
- Choose a recording destination. In OBS, open Settings > Output and set the recording path to a drive with enough free space. Prefer a location you can identify and monitor; a 24/7 file grows continuously.
- Set the recording format. Under the recording output settings, select MKV for interruption resilience. If you select Hybrid MP4 or Hybrid MOV, first confirm that your installed OBS version exposes the option and that its video and audio codecs suit your editor.
- Select quality with storage and hardware in mind. Choose a quality preset that the computer can encode continuously and the destination can store for the intended retention period. OBS’s Lossless preset uses the CPU encoder and creates very large files; OBS publishes an estimate of around 7 GB per minute for Lossless. Its Indistinguishable preset can also increase storage use and affect older or weaker hardware. These are OBS’s published cautions, not a prediction of your exact file size.
- Start a short test recording. Check that OBS writes to the intended drive, that the file plays, and that your editing software accepts the format and codecs. A brief test will not prove 24/7 stability, but it can catch a wrong path or incompatible workflow before a long session.
- Decide how long to retain recordings and make a second copy. Estimate storage from a measured recording and your planned retention period, then arrange a separate copy for anything valuable. A resilient container helps with an interrupted write; it is not a backup against drive failure, deletion, or other loss.
Convert an MKV to MP4 after recording
When you need an MP4 editing or delivery copy, keep the resilient original and remux after the recording has stopped. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the audio or video, so it is generally much faster than encoding again.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In OBS, open File > Remux Recordings.
- Select the completed MKV recording and choose the destination for the MP4 output.
- Run the remux, then open the resulting MP4 in the target player or editor and check playback before moving or deleting the original.
OBS also documents an option to automatically remux recordings after recording stops. This is useful if you routinely need MP4 copies, but it does not remove the need to retain and back up files appropriately. See the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide for the remux workflow.
Preserve the settings needed to restore the recording setup
After changing output settings, export the OBS profile so you can preserve most of those settings. OBS profiles do not contain scenes, so export or back up the scene collection separately. The distinction matters: restoring the profile alone will not recreate the complete production layout. See OBS Profiles.

Troubleshoot common recording risks
- The file will not open after OBS or the PC stopped unexpectedly: If it was regular MP4/MOV, finalization may have been interrupted. For future recordings, choose MKV or a supported Hybrid format. OBS says unfinished MKV files remain playable and recoverable, but no format can guarantee recovery in every failure.
- The MP4 output is missing or does not play: Confirm that the source recording is complete, then use File > Remux Recordings. If the remuxed file still fails in your editor, check codec support as well as the container; remuxing does not make an unsupported codec compatible.
- The drive fills during a long session: Lower the recording-quality setting if appropriate, choose a destination with more capacity, or shorten retention. Avoid OBS Lossless for unattended long-term recording unless you have planned for its very high storage use—OBS estimates around 7 GB per minute.
- The computer struggles during recording: A demanding quality preset can exceed available encoding resources, particularly on older or weaker hardware. Try a less demanding preset and test under the same workload before relying on a long session.
- The restored OBS setup lacks scenes: Import or restore the scene collection separately; profiles preserve most output settings but not scenes.
Keep a YouTube stream running without relying on a local PC
A local OBS recording is useful when you need a file on your own storage, but it depends on your computer and drive. For a prerecorded YouTube stream that should continue while your computer is off, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud. It does not replace a local backup: retain your own source files if you need them.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
